CHAPTER 9 — THE BLOODLINE SECRET

For twenty years, Daniel believed he had lost his family.

Now he discovered something much worse.

His family had been hiding from him.

The warehouse felt smaller with every passing second.

The words Evelyn had whispered kept repeating in his mind.

“The man behind Richard…”

“Your grandfather.”

Impossible.

That was the only word Daniel could think.

Impossible.

His grandfather had died before Daniel was old enough to remember him.

The family had buried him.

The records existed.

The photographs existed.

Everyone knew the story.

So why was Evelyn looking at him like she had just revealed the darkest truth in the world?

“Explain.”

Daniel’s voice was quiet.

But everyone heard the danger behind it.

Evelyn pressed a hand against her injured shoulder.

“Your grandfather was not who you thought he was.”

Daniel stared.

“Everyone thought he was a respected businessman.”

Evelyn nodded.

“That was the image he created.”

The warehouse became silent.

“He built his fortune through manipulation, secrets, and control.”

Daniel looked at the documents scattered across the table.

“So my entire family was built on lies?”

“No.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“Your father tried to change that.”

Twenty-five years earlier.

Before Voss International.

Before Daniel became the man everyone knew.

His father, Thomas Carter, had discovered something hidden inside the family empire.

A secret financial network.

A system built by his own father.

A network designed to control companies, influence investors, and destroy anyone who challenged the Carter family.

Thomas wanted out.

He wanted to expose everything.

But leaving was not an option.

Because people like Richard Vale did not allow powerful secrets to escape.

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

“And you knew all of this?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Her eyes filled with regret.

“Because your father made me promise.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps saying my father wanted this. My father wanted that.”

His voice cracked.

“But nobody asked what I wanted.”

The room went quiet.

Because Daniel was right.

Everyone had protected him by keeping him trapped inside a lie.

A sound interrupted them.

A phone ringing.

Everyone looked around.

It was Daniel’s phone.

Unknown number.

Again.

He answered immediately.

A voice appeared.

Distorted.

Calm.

“You finally found the truth.”

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Where is my wife?”

A quiet laugh.

“Still thinking about Emma.”

“Where is she?”

“You always were like your father.”

Daniel froze.

The voice continued.

“Protecting people who make you weak.”

Daniel tightened his grip.

“Show yourself.”

“Soon.”

A pause.

“But first, you should know something.”

Daniel said nothing.

“Your wife was never chosen randomly.”

His heart tightened.

“What does that mean?”

“She carries something your family lost twenty years ago.”

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

“What?”

The voice continued.

“Your father hid it before he died.”

Daniel felt a chill.

“Where is Emma?”

The caller ignored the question.

“You thought the trust fund was about money.”

A pause.

“It was never about money.”

Daniel’s face changed.

The voice became colder.

“It was about inheritance.”

The call ended.

Everyone remained silent.

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

“What inheritance?”

She looked terrified.

“I don’t know.”

“You’re lying.”

“I swear.”

Daniel studied her face.

This time, he believed her.

Because Evelyn wasn’t hiding something.

She was afraid.

Jonathan’s voice came through Daniel’s phone.

“Daniel.”

He turned.

Jonathan was standing near the entrance.

“I found something.”

Daniel looked at him.

“What?”

Jonathan held a file.

“We traced the trust documents.”

Daniel walked toward him.

“And?”

Jonathan opened it.

“The trust was not created only by you and Emma.”

Daniel frowned.

“What?”

“There was another name attached.”

Daniel looked down.

His expression changed.

Because the third signature belonged to someone who was supposed to have nothing to do with the account.

Someone dead.

Someone who had not existed in Daniel’s life for years.

Thomas Carter.

His father.

Daniel stared at the document.

“That’s impossible.”

Jonathan shook his head.

“It’s real.”

“How?”

“The trust was created using an old legal structure.”

Daniel looked confused.

“What structure?”

Jonathan answered:

“Legacy protection.”

A term Daniel had heard before.

But never understood.

His father used to mention it.

A system designed to protect family assets from enemies.

Jonathan continued:

“The trust was not meant to protect money.”

Daniel looked up.

“Then what was it meant to protect?”

Jonathan looked at him.

“A person.”

The room became silent.

Daniel felt his heartbeat increase.

“Who?”

Jonathan slowly answered:

“The next Carter heir.”

Daniel looked toward the hospital.

Toward Emma.

Toward his unborn children.

The realization hit him.

The trust was never created because of the babies.

The babies were created before anyone knew they existed.

Someone had planned for their arrival.

Someone knew there would be a new Carter generation.

Someone had been waiting.

Meanwhile…

Emma sat in the dark room.

Hours had passed.

She had stopped counting.

Fear wanted to control her.

But she refused.

Because she had learned something from Daniel.

Strength was not the absence of fear.

Strength was moving forward despite it.

The door opened.

Emma looked up.

Alexander entered.

But he looked different.

Not like a kidnapper.

Like a prisoner.

“You.”

Emma’s voice was cold.

Alexander avoided her eyes.

“I’m sorry.”

Emma laughed softly.

“You all say that.”

He looked at her.

“I didn’t want this.”

“You helped them.”

“Yes.”

“Then you chose this.”

Alexander looked away.

“You don’t understand.”

Emma stared.

“No.”

She paused.

“You don’t understand.”

That surprised him.

Emma continued:

“You think Daniel is dangerous because he has power.”

Her voice became stronger.

“But you don’t know him.”

Alexander said nothing.

“He will find me.”

A small silence.

“He always does.”

Alexander looked at her.

And for the first time…

He looked afraid.

Because he knew she was right.

Back at the warehouse, Daniel received another message.

This time, it was a photograph.

Emma.

Alive.

Standing beside a man.

Daniel’s blood froze.

Because the man holding the photograph was someone he recognized.

Someone from his childhood.

Someone who had disappeared years ago.

The caption below the image said:

THE LAST CARTER HEIR BELONGS TO US.

Daniel stared.

Then whispered:

“No…”

Because the man standing beside Emma was supposed to be dead.

His older brother.

Lucas Carter.

The impossible had become reality.

His grandfather was alive.

His brother was alive.

His father’s secrets were still alive.

And now Daniel understood the real war.

They were not trying to steal his company.

They were trying to reclaim the Carter empire.

May you like

And Emma was carrying the only thing they believed could give them control.

The future of the Carter bloodline.
