CHAPTER 13 — THE CHOICE THAT COULD DESTROY EVERYTHING

The room went silent.

Not the peaceful kind.

The kind that comes before something breaks.

Daniel stared at Catherine Carter.

The woman who had existed only as a shadow in his family’s history.

The woman connected to his father’s death.

The woman who had manipulated Vanessa, Alexander, and countless others.

And now she stood in front of him asking him to make a choice.

A choice no husband.

No father.

Should ever have to make.

“You’re insane.”

Daniel’s voice was low.

Catherine did not react.

“No.”

She looked at him calmly.

“I am the only person in this room who understands what is coming.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“You kidnapped my wife.”

“I protected her.”

The words were so cold that everyone froze.

Emma looked at Catherine with disbelief.

“Protected me?”

Catherine turned toward her.

“Yes.”

“You had me taken from a hospital.”

“Yes.”

“You terrified me.”

“Yes.”

Emma’s eyes hardened.

“Then don’t call it protection.”

For the first time, Catherine looked at Emma with interest.

Not anger.

Respect.

“You have more strength than I expected.”

Emma stared.

“You expected me to be weak?”

“No.”

Catherine glanced at Daniel.

“I expected Daniel to choose someone who needed saving.”

A pause.

“But he chose someone who fights beside him.”

Daniel’s expression changed.

Because Catherine wasn’t speaking like an enemy.

She was speaking like someone who had been studying them.

“Enough games.”

Daniel’s voice cut through the room.

“Tell me what you want.”

Catherine walked slowly toward the old Carter documents.

“I want what your father destroyed.”

“My father protected people.”

“Your father destroyed stability.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“You keep saying that.”

“Because it’s true.”

Catherine picked up an old photograph.

Thomas Carter.

Daniel’s father.

“He believed he could erase the Carter legacy and start again.”

She looked at Daniel.

“He was wrong.”

“He wanted to stop corruption.”

“He wanted to destroy power.”

Catherine placed the photograph down.

“There is a difference.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No. There isn’t.”

Catherine looked disappointed.

“You really are his son.”

Michael stepped forward.

“You released the company documents.”

Catherine looked at him.

“Yes.”

“You framed Daniel.”

“No.”

Michael frowned.

“You exposed him.”

Catherine nodded.

“Because the world needed to see how fragile his empire really was.”

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“You created the crisis.”

“I revealed the crisis.”

“That’s the same thing.”

“No.”

Catherine’s voice became sharper.

“The company was already infected.”

She looked around.

“Vanessa stole.”

“Alexander manipulated.”

“Executives covered losses.”

She looked at Daniel.

“And you trusted everyone because you wanted to believe loyalty still existed.”

The words hit harder because part of them were true.

Daniel hated that.

“Why Emma?”

The question came from Daniel.

Catherine became silent.

For the first time…

She hesitated.

A small crack appeared.

Daniel noticed.

“Why are my children important?”

Catherine looked toward Emma.

“Because they are the future.”

Daniel shook his head.

“They’re babies.”

“To you.”

A pause.

“To the world we live in, they represent something much larger.”

Emma touched her stomach protectively.

“You are talking about my children like they are objects.”

Catherine looked at her.

“No.”

Her voice softened.

“I’m talking about them like they are survivors.”

Everyone became quiet.

Daniel frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Catherine looked at Evelyn.

Evelyn looked away.

Daniel noticed.

Again.

Another secret.

“Someone explain.”

Nobody spoke.

Daniel’s patience disappeared.

“Now.”

Evelyn finally stepped forward.

“Your father discovered something before he died.”

Daniel looked at her.

“What?”

“A hidden branch of the Carter family.”

Lucas nodded.

“The original bloodline.”

Daniel frowned.

“I don’t understand.”

Evelyn took a breath.

“Your grandfather was not the first Carter to build power.”

She looked at the old documents.

“The Carter name existed long before Edward.”

“How long?”

“Over one hundred years.”

Daniel stared.

“And?”

Lucas answered.

“The family created a system.”

“A system?”

“A protection system.”

He continued.

“A network of assets, legal protections, and information designed to survive generations.”

Daniel looked at Catherine.

“And she wants control of it.”

Catherine didn’t deny it.

“Yes.”

Emma looked shocked.

“So this was never about money.”

“No.”

Catherine looked at her.

“It was about survival.”

Suddenly, Daniel’s phone rang.

Jonathan.

He answered immediately.

“Daniel.”

Jonathan’s voice sounded urgent.

“We found something.”

“What?”

“A hidden account connected to Catherine.”

Daniel looked at Catherine.

“Where?”

Jonathan continued.

“It’s not an account.”

A pause.

“It’s a location.”

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Where?”

Jonathan sent the coordinates.

Daniel opened them.

His face turned pale.

Because the location was not a warehouse.

Not a company.

Not a hidden facility.

It was a place from his childhood.

His old family home.

The house where his parents died.

Catherine watched his reaction.

“You found it.”

Daniel looked at her.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“What’s there?”

“The truth.”

Daniel’s eyes hardened.

“You expect me to trust you?”

“No.”

Catherine looked at him.

“I expect you to see it yourself.”

An hour later…

Daniel stood in front of the abandoned Carter family house.

The place had been untouched for decades.

The place where his life changed forever.

Emma stood beside him.

Daniel looked at her.

“You should stay back.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

“Emma—”

“No.”

Her voice was calm.

“I was already a target.”

She held his hand.

“I’m not hiding while everyone else decides my future.”

Daniel looked at her.

And for the first time that night, he smiled.

Because Catherine had made one mistake.

She underestimated Emma.

Inside the house, Daniel found the hidden room.

The same room his father had used.

The same place where the first secrets began.

In the center was an old recording device.

And a letter.

Daniel pressed play.

His father’s voice filled the room.

“Daniel.”

Everyone froze.

“If you are hearing this, then Catherine has returned.”

Daniel’s breathing stopped.

His father continued:

“I need you to understand something.”

A pause.

“Catherine is not the person you should fear.”

Daniel looked at Catherine.

She looked surprised.

The recording continued.

“She made terrible choices.”

Another pause.

“But she was trying to stop something worse.”

Daniel frowned.

“What?”

His father’s voice became quieter.

“The Carter family has always had enemies.”

The recording crackled.

“But the greatest enemy was never outside.”

Silence.

“It was someone inside our bloodline.”

Everyone looked at each other.

Then the final words came.

“The person who ordered my death…”

The recording stopped.

Daniel froze.

The battery had died.

But before it shut off…

One final name appeared on the screen.

A name that none of them expected.

THOMAS CARTER’S KILLER: UNKNOWN.

Below it:

ACCESS LEVEL: DANIEL CARTER ONLY.

Daniel stared.

His father had not left the answer.

He had left a path.

A path only Daniel could complete.

Then Catherine spoke.

Quietly.

“You finally understand.”

Daniel turned.

“What?”

She looked at him.

“This was never about choosing between your wife and your legacy.”

A pause.

“It was about choosing whether you were ready to learn the truth.”

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“And if I’m not?”

Catherine looked toward the darkness.

“Then the person who killed your father will finish what they started.”

The lights flickered.

Everyone turned.

A message appeared on the old computer screen.

A remote connection.

Someone had accessed the system.

A single sentence appeared:

YOU FOUND THE ROOM.

Another line appeared beneath it.

NOW I KNOW WHERE ALL OF YOU ARE.

Daniel’s blood ran cold.

Because someone had been watching them the entire time.

Someone who knew every move they made.

Someone even Catherine feared.

The screen displayed one final name.

Not Catherine.

Not Edward.

Not Alexander.

Not Vanessa.

A new name.

One Daniel had never heard before.

VICTOR CARTER.

Lucas stepped back.

His face lost all color.

“No…”

Daniel looked at him.

“Who is Victor?”

Lucas whispered:

“The brother we were told never existed.”

The room fell silent.

Because the Carter family’s secrets had just become even darker.

And Daniel realized the truth:

The war for the Carter legacy had only begun.
