CHAPTER 17 — THE WOMAN WHO STOLE HIS CHILDHOOD

The photograph remained on the table.

Nobody touched it.

Nobody spoke.

Because sometimes the truth was not revealed through words.

Sometimes it was revealed through a face.

A familiar face.

A face that had been part of Daniel’s entire life.

Evelyn Carter.

The woman who held his hand when he was a child.

The woman who stayed beside him after his parents died.

The woman who told him the world was cruel but he would survive.

The woman he called family.

Now her face was sitting inside a photograph connected to the darkest secret of his life.

Daniel stared at it.

His hands slowly tightened.

“No.”

The word came out quietly.

Not because he didn’t believe it.

Because he desperately wanted it to be false.

Evelyn stood in silence.

For once, she did not try to explain.

She did not defend herself.

And that scared Daniel more than any lie.

“Tell me.”

His voice was low.

“Tell me this isn’t true.”

Evelyn looked at him.

Her eyes were filled with pain.

“Daniel…”

“No.”

He stepped back.

“Don’t.”

A pause.

“Not now.”

Everyone remained silent.

Even Catherine.

Even Victor.

Because this moment belonged to Daniel.

Twenty years of unanswered questions.

Twenty years of believing he lost everything because of an accident.

Twenty years of remembering the woman who saved him.

And now wondering if she was the reason he needed saving.

“You were there.”

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

“The night my parents died.”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

His heart sank.

“You told me they lost control of the car.”

“Yes.”

“You told me nobody could have prevented it.”

Silence.

“Was that a lie?”

A tear rolled down Evelyn’s face.

“Yes.”

The word destroyed him.

Not because it surprised him.

Because it confirmed everything he feared.

Emma moved closer to Daniel.

But she did not interrupt.

She knew this was something he needed to face.

“Why?”

Daniel asked.

The question was simple.

But behind it were twenty years of pain.

“Why would you do that to me?”

Evelyn looked at him.

“I didn’t want to.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Everyone says that.”

His eyes became colder.

“But everyone does it anyway.”

Evelyn lowered her head.

“I was afraid.”

“Of what?”

“The Carter family.”

Daniel looked confused.

“You were afraid of my family?”

“Yes.”

A pause.

“Because I knew what they were capable of.”

Evelyn walked toward the old documents.

“When Thomas discovered the truth about Victor and Catherine, he knew the family was collapsing.”

She touched the photograph.

“He created a plan.”

Daniel listened carefully.

“He wanted to expose everyone involved.”

“And you helped him?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did he die?”

Evelyn looked at him.

“Because the plan failed.”

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“What failed?”

Evelyn took a deep breath.

“Thomas trusted the wrong person.”

Silence.

Everyone looked at her.

“Who?”

Evelyn looked at Daniel.

“You.”

The answer shocked everyone.

Daniel froze.

“What?”

Evelyn shook her head quickly.

“Not because you betrayed him.”

A pause.

“Because you were used.”

She explained.

The night before his parents died, Thomas discovered someone had accessed the Carter security files.

Someone had stolen information about his plan.

Someone knew everything.

The location.

The documents.

The evidence.

The people involved.

And the only way to protect Daniel was to make everyone believe the investigation was over.

“So my father staged his own disappearance?”

Evelyn looked down.

“No.”

Daniel’s expression changed.

“He died.”

The words were quiet.

“But before he died…”

She looked at Emma.

“He asked me to protect you.”

Daniel looked confused.

“From who?”

Evelyn’s answer came slowly.

“From the person who was closest to you.”

Daniel’s eyes hardened.

“Who?”

Evelyn looked at him.

“Not me.”

A pause.

“Someone else.”

Everyone became silent.

Daniel stared.

“But Victor said—”

“Victor lies.”

Evelyn looked toward the screen.

“Just like everyone in this family.”

Suddenly, the mansion lights flickered.

Victor smiled.

“You see?”

Everyone turned.

The old security screen had activated.

Victor’s face appeared.

“Even now, they are still hiding things from you.”

Daniel looked at the screen.

“You knew this would happen.”

Victor smiled.

“Of course.”

“You wanted me to turn against Evelyn.”

“No.”

Victor shook his head.

“I wanted you to understand.”

Daniel frowned.

“Understand what?”

Victor leaned closer.

“That nobody in this family is innocent.”

The screen changed.

A video appeared.

A security recording.

Twenty years old.

A night recording from the Carter estate.

Daniel froze.

Because he recognized the hallway.

His childhood home.

The video played.

A younger Thomas Carter walked through the hallway.

He looked nervous.

He was holding a file.

Then another person entered.

A woman.

Daniel leaned closer.

His breathing stopped.

Because he knew her.

The younger Evelyn.

The two people spoke.

But the audio was damaged.

Victor enhanced it.

The words became clearer.

Thomas:

"You promised you would protect him."

Evelyn:

"I am protecting him."

Thomas:

"Then why did you tell them?"

The video stopped.

Everyone froze.

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

“What did you tell them?”

Evelyn looked devastated.

“I made a mistake.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“What mistake?”

Evelyn finally broke.

“I gave them information.”

Silence.

Daniel stared.

“What information?”

“Your father’s location.”

The room went cold.

Emma grabbed Daniel’s arm.

He looked like he couldn’t breathe.

“You betrayed him.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“No.”

“Then explain.”

“I thought I was saving him.”

Daniel’s voice cracked.

“How?”

Evelyn looked at the floor.

“Because Catherine told me Thomas was going to die.”

A pause.

“She said if I gave them the location, they would only take the documents.”

Daniel stared.

“And you believed her?”

Evelyn cried.

“Yes.”

Silence.

“And when I realized the truth…”

She looked at him.

“It was too late.”

Nobody spoke.

Because the truth was worse than betrayal.

It was a mistake that destroyed an entire family.

Daniel walked away slowly.

The woman who raised him had not planned his parents’ death.

But she had opened the door.

And sometimes…

That was enough.

Later that night…

Daniel stood alone outside the mansion.

Emma joined him.

For several moments, neither spoke.

Finally, Emma asked:

“Do you hate her?”

Daniel looked into the darkness.

“I don’t know.”

A pause.

“She was my mother when I had no one.”

Emma stood beside him.

“And she was also part of the reason you lost them.”

Daniel nodded.

“That’s the worst part.”

He looked at Emma.

“Everyone is either a monster or a victim.”

Emma shook her head.

“No.”

“What?”

“People can be both.”

Daniel looked at her.

And he realized something.

That was the truth he had been avoiding.

The Carter family was not a story about good people and bad people.

It was a story about people who made choices.

And every choice had a consequence.

Inside the mansion, Gabriel discovered something hidden in the old records.

A final document.

A document Thomas had sealed before his death.

He opened it.

His face changed.

“Daniel.”

Everyone turned.

“What?”

Gabriel held the paper.

“I found the real reason your father created the trust.”

Daniel walked toward him.

“What reason?”

Gabriel looked at Emma.

Then at the twins.

“The trust was not created to protect the Carter fortune.”

A pause.

“It was created to protect a confession.”

Daniel frowned.

“What confession?”

Gabriel turned the paper around.

At the bottom was Thomas Carter’s signature.

And one sentence:

THE TRUE ENEMY IS STILL INSIDE THIS FAMILY.

Daniel’s heart tightened.

Because he thought they had finally reached the end of the truth.

But they hadn’t.

They had only reached the beginning.

May you like

And the final secret…

Was still waiting.
