CHAPTER 12 — THE AUNT WHO CONTROLLED THE EMPIRE

For twenty years, Daniel believed the enemy had a face.

First, he thought it was fate.

A tragic accident.

A cruel twist of life that took his parents away.

Then he believed it was Richard Vale.

The powerful businessman who destroyed anyone who stood against him.

Then Edward Carter.

The grandfather who disappeared and returned from the shadows.

But now Daniel finally understood.

Every enemy he had chased…

Every secret he had uncovered…

Every betrayal he had suffered…

Had been connected to one person.

A woman whose name had been erased from his family history.

Catherine Carter.

His aunt.

The person his father died trying to stop.

The old mansion remained silent after the phone call ended.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The name alone carried enough weight.

Catherine.

Daniel looked at Lucas.

“You knew.”

Lucas looked away.

“Not everything.”

“But enough.”

Lucas nodded.

Daniel’s anger grew.

“You all knew there was someone else.”

Evelyn stepped forward.

“We were trying to protect you.”

Daniel turned toward her.

“No.”

His voice was controlled.

“But you were protecting the truth.”

Nobody answered.

Because nobody could deny it.

Daniel had spent his entire life surrounded by people who claimed they loved him.

And every single one of them had decided what he was allowed to know.

His parents.

His brother.

His grandfather.

Evelyn.

All of them.

The only person who had never lied to him was Emma.

And she was the one who almost paid the price.

“Who is Catherine Carter?”

Emma asked quietly.

Everyone looked at her.

Daniel walked back to her side.

That simple movement reminded everyone of something important.

Emma was not just a victim.

She was part of this fight now.

Lucas answered.

“She was Edward’s oldest child.”

Emma frowned.

“Then why was she erased?”

Lucas looked at the old family documents.

“Because Catherine was smarter than everyone.”

Daniel looked at him.

“That doesn’t sound like a reason to erase someone.”

Lucas shook his head.

“It does when someone is afraid of what she can do.”

Years earlier…

Catherine Carter was considered the true genius of the family.

While Edward built relationships and influence, Catherine understood systems.

Money.

Politics.

Information.

She knew that whoever controlled information controlled everything.

But there was one problem.

She believed the Carter family was wasting its power.

Her father wanted to build a respected empire.

Her brother Thomas wanted to use that empire to help people.

Catherine wanted something different.

Control.

Absolute control.

“She believed the family should never answer to anyone,” Lucas explained.

Daniel listened carefully.

“She wanted to create a world where the Carter name could not be challenged.”

Emma looked at him.

“And your father disagreed.”

Lucas nodded.

“Thomas believed power existed to protect people.”

A pause.

“Catherine believed people existed to protect power.”

Daniel walked through the old mansion.

Every room held another piece of a life he never knew.

Family portraits.

Old documents.

Hidden records.

His entire childhood had been built on incomplete information.

Then he saw something.

A photograph.

Three children.

Lucas.

Daniel.

And a little girl.

Daniel stopped.

“Who is she?”

Nobody answered.

He looked closer.

The girl stood beside Thomas.

Smiling.

Happy.

Before everything broke.

“Catherine.”

Evelyn nodded.

Daniel stared.

“She was part of the family.”

“Yes.”

“And now she’s the person destroying it.”

Evelyn looked down.

“She doesn’t believe she’s destroying anything.”

Daniel turned.

“What does that mean?”

“She believes she is saving it.”

A notification appeared on Michael’s laptop.

Everyone looked.

“Daniel.”

His voice sounded worried.

“What?”

Michael turned the screen.

A live broadcast was playing.

A financial news channel.

The headline appeared:

VOSS INTERNATIONAL HOLDINGS UNDER INVESTIGATION AFTER MASSIVE FINANCIAL IRREGULARITIES DISCOVERED

Daniel’s expression changed.

“What?”

Michael continued scrolling.

“Anonymous documents were released.”

“From where?”

Michael looked at him.

“The same hidden accounts connected to Vanessa and Alexander.”

Daniel understood immediately.

“This is not an investigation.”

“No.”

Michael looked at him.

“It’s an attack.”

Within hours, the world turned against Daniel.

News reports.

Business partners withdrawing.

Investors panicking.

People who once praised him now questioned everything.

The empire he built began collapsing publicly.

Exactly like Catherine wanted.

Daniel stood in the old mansion watching the news.

“She’s forcing me into a corner.”

Lucas nodded.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because she wants you to make a choice.”

Daniel looked at him.

“What choice?”

Lucas’s expression became serious.

“Keep your company.”

A pause.

“Or protect your family.”

Daniel looked confused.

“She can’t take both?”

Lucas shook his head.

“That’s the point.”

He explained.

“Catherine believes the Carter empire should belong to someone who understands sacrifice.”

Daniel frowned.

“What sacrifice?”

Lucas looked toward Emma.

Daniel immediately understood.

His children.

The next generation.

Catherine didn’t want money.

She wanted control over the future.

That night, Daniel received a message.

From Catherine.

A video file.

He opened it.

Catherine appeared on the screen.

An elegant woman in her sixties.

Perfectly dressed.

Calm.

No anger.

No hatred.

Just confidence.

“Daniel.”

Her voice was surprisingly gentle.

“I know you hate me.”

Daniel stared.

“But hate is temporary.”

She smiled.

“Legacy is permanent.”

Daniel said nothing.

Catherine continued.

“Your father misunderstood the Carter family.”

A pause.

“He thought love was our greatest strength.”

Her expression hardened.

“It was our greatest weakness.”

Daniel clenched his jaw.

“You tried to kill my father.”

“No.”

Her answer was immediate.

“I tried to stop him from destroying everything.”

“You murdered him.”

Catherine looked away.

For the first time, a small emotion appeared.

Regret.

“Your father forced my hand.”

Daniel felt disgusted.

“Everyone says they had no choice.”

Catherine looked directly into the camera.

“But I did have a choice.”

A pause.

“And I chose the family.”

Daniel shook his head.

“You chose yourself.”

Catherine smiled sadly.

“You still don’t understand.”

She leaned closer.

“The Carter empire is not a company.”

The screen flickered.

“It is a bloodline.”

Daniel froze.

Catherine continued:

“And Emma is carrying the future of that bloodline.”

His face changed.

“She is not your weakness, Daniel.”

A pause.

“She is the reason everyone is fighting.”

The video ended.

Minutes later, another message arrived.

This time from Alexander.

Only four words.

I KNOW WHERE SHE IS.

Daniel immediately called.

Alexander answered.

His voice was urgent.

“Daniel, listen carefully.”

“Where is Catherine?”

“That’s not the problem.”

Daniel froze.

“What?”

Alexander whispered:

“She isn’t trying to control the company.”

A pause.

“She’s trying to control the children.”

Daniel’s heart stopped.

“What are you talking about?”

Alexander took a breath.

“The trust fund wasn’t designed to protect their money.”

Daniel remembered.

Jonathan’s words.

A person.

Not money.

Alexander continued:

“It was created to protect their identity.”

Silence.

“What identity?”

Alexander’s voice became almost afraid.

“The fact that your children are not just Carter heirs.”

Daniel’s expression changed.

“What else are they?”

Alexander whispered:

“They are the last living descendants of the original Carter legacy.”

Daniel looked toward Emma.

And suddenly, everything made sense.

The attack.

The kidnapping.

The documents.

The lies.

Catherine was not trying to steal his empire.

She was trying to take the only thing that could replace it.

His children.

At that moment, the mansion lights went out.

Again.

The same pattern.

The same warning.

A shadow moved outside.

Daniel reached for his weapon.

Then a voice came from the darkness.

“Daniel.”

Everyone froze.

A woman stepped into the room.

Catherine Carter.

Alive.

Standing only meters away.

She looked at Emma.

Then at Daniel.

“I didn’t come here to fight.”

Daniel stared.

“Then why are you here?”

Catherine smiled.

“To offer you the truth.”

A pause.

“And a choice.”

Daniel narrowed his eyes.

“What choice?”

Catherine looked at Emma’s pregnant stomach.

Then back at him.

“You can save your wife…”

Her voice became colder.

“Or you can save the Carter legacy.”

The room fell silent.

Because Daniel finally understood.

This was never a war for money.

May you like

It was a war for the future.

And Catherine Carter had just forced him into the impossible choice every father fears.
