CHAPTER 1 — THE NIGHT EVERYTHING BROKE

The first thing I heard was the sound of my own heartbeat.
Not Vanessa’s footsteps.
Not her angry voice.
Not even the impact of her fist.
Just my heartbeat.
Fast.
Terrified.
Desperate.
I was eight months pregnant with twins, standing in the place where I was supposed to feel safest — my own home.
But that night, my home became the place where someone tried to destroy everything I loved.
Including my children.
Vanessa had always been difficult.
Daniel’s younger sister had a talent for making every room feel smaller when she entered it. She was charming in front of strangers, graceful at charity events, and perfectly polite whenever Daniel was watching.
But behind closed doors, she was different.
She had always believed the world owed her something.
Money.
Attention.
Power.
And now, apparently, my babies’ future.
The trust fund had been created months earlier after Daniel’s company reached a major milestone. It was not just money.
It represented security.
A promise.
A future for our children before they had even taken their first breath.
$150,000 placed into a protected account under strict conditions.
Only Daniel and I had access.
Or at least, that was what we believed.
That evening, Vanessa arrived without warning.
She didn’t bring a gift.
She didn’t ask how the pregnancy was going.
She didn’t even look at my swollen stomach.
Her eyes went straight to the documents sitting on the kitchen counter.
The moment I saw her expression change, I knew something was wrong.
“Where is it?” she asked.
I frowned.
“Where is what?”
She walked closer.
“The transfer code.”
The room suddenly felt colder.
I stared at her.
“Vanessa, what are you talking about?”
Her smile disappeared.
“The trust account.”
A nervous feeling crawled through my chest.
“You mean the account for my children?”
She tilted her head.
“Our children.”
“No.”
The word came out before I could stop it.
And that was the moment her patience ended.
“You really think you’re in control of everything, don’t you?”
I stepped back.
“Daniel created that trust for our babies. You have no right to access it.”
Her face hardened.
For the first time, I saw something underneath the anger.
Fear.
Pure panic.
She wasn’t angry because I refused.
She was desperate.
“You don’t understand what you’re doing.”
“I understand perfectly.”
“You have no idea what’s at stake.”
“I know exactly what’s at stake.”
I placed my hand over my stomach.
“My children.”
Something changed in her eyes.
A coldness I will never forget.
“You always were the problem.”
I barely had time to react.
Her hand moved.
The pain came before the shock.
A sharp, violent force against my stomach.
My body froze.
For a second, I couldn’t breathe.
Then everything collapsed.
The floor rushed toward me.
My knees hit the hardwood.
And before I could even scream—
My water broke.
The reality of what was happening hit me harder than the pain.
My babies.
My twins.
Something was wrong.
“Vanessa…”
My voice shook.
“Call an ambulance.”
But she didn’t move.
She just stared at me.
Cold.
Calculating.
“You’re still going to make this difficult?”
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“I’m pregnant.”
She looked away.
“As if I don’t know.”
Then she grabbed my hair.
The scream that escaped me didn’t sound like my own.
She dragged me across the floor, ignoring my pleas, ignoring my fear, ignoring the lives she was putting at risk.
“Give me the code!”
“I don’t have it!”
“Don’t lie to me!”
“I swear!”
Her grip tightened.
“Daniel trusts you because he thinks you’re innocent.”
Her voice became a whisper.
“But I know better.”
My vision blurred.
Not from tears.
From fear.
Not for myself.
For my babies.
Then—
The front door opened.
A familiar voice filled the hallway.
“Emma?”
Everything stopped.
Vanessa froze.
I looked toward the entrance.
Daniel stood there.
The man who had left two weeks earlier for an overseas business trip.
The man who thought he was coming home to surprise his pregnant wife.
Instead, he found a nightmare.
His eyes moved slowly.
First to me.
Lying on the floor.
Eight months pregnant.
Terrified.
Then to Vanessa.
Her hand still tangled in my hair.
The silence was unbearable.
“Daniel…”
Vanessa released me immediately.
She stepped backward.
And in less than five seconds, the woman who had just attacked me transformed into someone completely different.
Her expression softened.
Her eyes filled with fake fear.
“Daniel, thank God you’re here.”
He didn’t answer.
“Your wife attacked me.”
I stared at her in disbelief.
“What?”
Vanessa continued.
“She became violent when I asked about the trust account.”
Daniel looked between us.
Confusion.
Shock.
Pain.
All fighting inside his expression.
Then Vanessa reached up and grabbed the hallway security camera.
She pulled.
The device tore away from the wall.
A small smile appeared on her face.
“There.”
She crushed it beneath her heel.
“The only proof is gone.”
She looked at Daniel.
“Now you only have my word against hers.”
But Vanessa didn’t know one thing.
The camera was not the only witness.
Thirty minutes before she destroyed it…
The footage had already uploaded.
And somewhere outside that mansion, a secure server was holding every second of what she had done.
Including the truth Vanessa was willing to kill to hide.
Because this was never just about money.

And Daniel was about to discover that his sister had not only betrayed his wife.
She had been stealing from him for years.
