CHAPTER 7 — THE HUNT FOR EMMA

The world stopped.
Not slowly.
Not gradually.
Instantly.
Daniel stared at the empty hospital bed, unable to process what he was seeing.
A few minutes ago, Emma was here.
Safe.
Recovering.
Waiting for him.
Now…
She was gone.
The woman carrying his children had disappeared from a secured hospital room.
And someone had left a message behind.
YOU SHOULD HAVE STOPPED.
Daniel read the words again.
His fingers tightened around the paper.
A strange calm settled over him.
Not because he wasn’t afraid.
Because he was.
Terrified.
But fear had always been something Daniel knew how to control.
Anger was easier.
Anger gave him direction.
“Daniel…”
Vanessa’s voice came from behind him.
He turned slowly.
For the first time, she looked completely broken.
Not the arrogant woman who demanded money.
Not the woman who believed she could manipulate everyone.
Just someone who realized she had helped unleash something she could no longer control.
“Where is she?”
Vanessa looked away.
“I don’t know.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“Wrong answer.”
“I swear.”
“Where is my wife?”
His voice was quiet.
But everyone in the hallway felt the danger behind it.
Vanessa swallowed.
“I never wanted this.”
Daniel stared at her.
“You punched my pregnant wife.”
Her eyes filled with shame.
“I know.”
“You dragged her across the floor.”
“I know.”
“You almost killed my children.”
The words hit her.
Vanessa looked down.
For the first time, she had no excuse.
“No.”
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“No?”
Vanessa shook her head.
“I almost killed your children because I was scared.”
Daniel froze slightly.
Not because he forgave her.
Because he heard something important.
Fear.
She wasn’t acting anymore.
She was afraid.
“Afraid of who?”
Vanessa didn’t answer.
And that silence told Daniel everything.
Five minutes later, Daniel, Michael, and Jonathan were inside a private hospital security room.
The hospital administrator looked nervous.
“Mr. Carter, we are doing everything possible.”
Daniel looked at the security monitors.
“Everything possible would have prevented my wife from disappearing.”
The administrator lowered his eyes.
Daniel didn’t care about apologies.
He needed facts.
“Show me the footage.”
The security officer pulled up the recordings.
11:43 PM.
The hallway lights flickered.
The cameras went offline.
11:45 PM.
A nurse entered Emma’s room.
11:47 PM.
A person wearing medical clothing left.
Daniel leaned closer.
“Stop.”
The footage froze.
The person’s height.
The movement.
The way they walked.
Something felt familiar.
“Enhance.”
The officer zoomed in.
The face remained hidden.
But Daniel noticed something.
The person wasn’t moving like a nurse.
They moved like someone trained.
Controlled.
Careful.
Michael looked at him.
“You think this was planned?”
Daniel didn’t answer.
Because he already knew.
“Yes.”
Jonathan placed his phone on the table.
“I traced the hospital network.”
Daniel looked at him.
“And?”
“The camera outage wasn’t random.”
“Someone hacked the system.”
Jonathan nodded.
“With internal access.”
Michael looked confused.
“Internal?”
Jonathan turned the screen around.
“The login credentials belonged to a hospital administrator.”
Daniel stared.
“Who?”
Jonathan hesitated.
Then showed the name.
Daniel’s expression changed.
Because he knew it.
Dr. Marcus Ellison.
Emma’s doctor.
The man who had been monitoring her pregnancy.
The man Daniel trusted.
“No.”
Michael looked at him.
“You know him?”
Daniel nodded slowly.
“He was recommended by Alexander.”
The room became silent.
Another connection.
Another piece.
Alexander.
Vanessa.
The hospital.
Everything led back to the same person.
Daniel stood.
“Find Marcus.”
Jonathan looked concerned.
“He disappeared.”
“When?”
“Thirty minutes ago.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
The enemy was moving faster than him.
And that was something he couldn’t allow.
Meanwhile…
Emma opened her eyes.
Darkness.
That was the first thing she noticed.
Not pain.
Not fear.
Darkness.
She tried to move.
A sharp pain moved through her body.
Her hands were tied.
Her breathing became faster.
Then she remembered.
The hospital.
The empty hallway.
The person entering her room.
The needle.
The darkness.
“Hello?”
Her voice was weak.
No answer.
Emma forced herself to stay calm.
She had learned something during her marriage.
Panic made people lose.
Thinking made people survive.
She looked around.
A small room.
Concrete walls.
No windows.
A single chair.
A table.
And on the table…
A folder.
Her name was written on it.
EMMA CARTER.
Her heart tightened.
Someone had prepared this.
This wasn’t random.
The door opened.
Emma froze.
A man walked in.
Dr. Marcus Ellison.
Her doctor.
The man who had checked on her babies every week.
The man who had smiled and told her everything would be okay.
Now he stood in front of her like a stranger.
“Doctor?”
Marcus looked uncomfortable.
“I’m sorry.”
Emma stared.
“What are you doing?”
He didn’t answer.
“You know I’m pregnant.”
“I know.”
“You know my babies are at risk.”
His expression changed.
A moment of guilt.
Then it disappeared.
“I didn’t have a choice.”
Emma studied him.
Everyone said the same thing.
Vanessa.
Alexander.
Everyone.
I didn’t have a choice.
But choices always existed.
People just chose what they were willing to sacrifice.
“Who forced you?”
Marcus looked away.
Emma whispered:
“Alexander.”
The doctor froze.
That reaction was all she needed.
She was right.
Back at the hospital, Daniel received a message.
A video file.
No sender.
He opened it.
Emma appeared on the screen.
Alive.
Terrified.
But conscious.
Daniel stopped breathing.
Then a voice appeared.
A distorted voice.
“Daniel Carter.”
The voice was calm.
“You spent your whole life building an empire.”
A pause.
“But you forgot one thing.”
Daniel stared at the screen.
“Every empire has a weakness.”
The camera moved closer to Emma.
Daniel’s face changed.
“Your weakness is the people you love.”
The video ended.
Immediately, another message appeared.
COME ALONE.
Michael looked at him.
“Daniel, don’t.”
But Daniel was already standing.
Jonathan grabbed his arm.
“This is a trap.”
Daniel looked at the screen.
At Emma.
At his unborn children.
“I know.”
“Then why go?”
Daniel’s voice became cold.
“Because they think taking my family makes me weak.”
He looked at them.
“They’re about to learn it makes me dangerous.”
An hour later, Daniel arrived at the abandoned warehouse location.
No security.
No backup.
Exactly as they demanded.
The doors opened.
Inside, one person waited.
Not Alexander.
Not Vanessa.
Someone else.
Someone Daniel thought had nothing to do with this.
The person stepped into the light.
Daniel stopped.
Because standing in front of him was the last person he expected.
His mother’s closest friend.
The woman who had raised him after his parents died.
The woman who had always told him she loved him like a son.
Evelyn Carter.
Daniel’s voice became a whisper.
“No…”
Evelyn smiled sadly.
“I’m sorry, Daniel.”
His entire world shifted.
Because if Evelyn was involved…
Then the betrayal wasn’t inside his company.
It was inside his family.

And the woman who knew all his childhood secrets…
Was the person who had been hiding the truth for twenty years.
