CHAPTER 11 — THE GRANDFATHER WHO NEVER DIED

Daniel had spent twenty years mourning a dead man.

Now that man was standing in front of him.

Alive.

Older.

Calm.

And completely unchanged.

Edward Carter.

The name that existed only in old photographs and forgotten family stories.

The man everyone believed had died before Daniel understood the world.

But there he was.

Standing in the middle of the warehouse like he had never disappeared.

Like he had been waiting for this moment.

Daniel couldn’t move.

His mind rejected what his eyes were seeing.

“No.”

The word escaped before he could stop it.

Edward smiled faintly.

“You always had your father’s stubbornness.”

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“Don’t talk about my father.”

The smile disappeared.

For the first time, Edward looked serious.

“Your father made the same mistake.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“What mistake?”

Edward looked at him.

“He believed morality was stronger than power.”

The silence that followed was heavy.

Daniel understood.

This man didn’t regret anything.

Not the lies.

Not the destruction.

Not the years of pain he caused.

“Where is Emma?”

Daniel’s voice cut through the room.

Edward looked almost amused.

“Still thinking about her.”

“She is my wife.”

“Yes.”

“She is carrying my children.”

“Yes.”

“Then you know exactly why I’m here.”

Edward walked slowly around the table.

“You believe this is about saving your family.”

Daniel said nothing.

Edward continued.

“But you still don’t understand the value of what she carries.”

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“My children are not assets.”

Edward smiled slightly.

“That is why your father failed.”

Daniel’s anger rose.

“My father was a better man than you.”

For the first time, Edward’s expression changed.

A small flash of anger.

Then it disappeared.

“Your father was weak.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“He protected people.”

“He protected his emotions.”

Edward pointed toward the documents.

“The Carter name was built on influence. Control. Legacy.”

He looked at Daniel.

“Not feelings.”

Lucas stood silently nearby.

Daniel noticed.

His brother wasn’t looking at Edward with respect.

He was looking at him with disappointment.

“You knew.”

Lucas looked at him.

“You knew he was alive.”

Lucas nodded.

Daniel’s face tightened.

“And you still worked with him?”

Lucas looked away.

“I worked against him.”

Edward laughed quietly.

“Still pretending to be the hero?”

Lucas’s jaw tightened.

Daniel noticed something.

A wound.

A history between them.

“You two know each other.”

Edward looked at Daniel.

“He was my greatest disappointment.”

Lucas looked back.

“And you were my greatest mistake.”

The words landed heavily.

Daniel realized something.

Lucas wasn’t Edward’s ally.

He was another victim.

Edward walked toward the table.

“The Carter legacy has existed for generations.”

Daniel stared.

“A criminal empire?”

Edward smiled.

“No.”

“A financial empire.”

He opened a folder.

Inside were records.

Companies.

Investments.

Political connections.

International accounts.

Daniel looked through them.

The scale was enormous.

“This is what my father tried to destroy.”

Edward shook his head.

“Your father tried to give away power.”

Daniel looked up.

“He wanted to stop innocent people from being hurt.”

Edward laughed.

“Innocent?”

He stepped closer.

“Daniel, the world does not reward innocence.”

“It should.”

Edward stared at him.

“That belief is why you almost lost everything.”

Suddenly, Daniel’s phone vibrated.

A message.

From Jonathan.

WE FOUND EMMA’S LOCATION.

Daniel looked at the coordinates.

An abandoned Carter property.

His grandfather’s old estate.

Edward noticed his expression.

“You found her.”

Daniel looked at him.

“Yes.”

Edward didn’t stop him.

That surprised Daniel.

“You’re letting me go?”

Edward smiled.

“Of course.”

Daniel narrowed his eyes.

“Why?”

“Because you will come back.”

Daniel frowned.

“What?”

Edward walked closer.

“Because once you see the truth, you will understand.”

Daniel stared.

“What truth?”

Edward’s voice became quiet.

“That your father was not protecting you from me.”

A pause.

“He was protecting you from yourself.”

The abandoned Carter estate was hidden deep outside the city.

Daniel arrived with Jonathan and Michael.

No police.

No media.

No backup.

Only trust.

The old mansion looked untouched by time.

Inside, they found Emma.

Alive.

Safe.

But exhausted.

The moment Daniel saw her, everything else disappeared.

“Emma.”

Her eyes filled with relief.

“Daniel.”

He rushed to her.

Carefully holding her.

Checking her.

The babies.

Everything.

“I’m sorry.”

Emma shook her head.

“This isn’t your fault.”

He looked at her.

“You were taken because of me.”

“No.”

She placed a hand on his face.

“You were fighting for us.”

For a moment, the chaos disappeared.

Then Emma whispered:

“Daniel.”

“What?”

“They wanted something.”

His expression changed.

“What?”

She looked toward the old room.

“Your father left something here.”

Daniel froze.

“How do you know?”

“Because Alexander told me.”

Daniel looked surprised.

“Alexander?”

Emma nodded.

“He wasn’t trying to hurt me.”

She hesitated.

“He was trying to keep them from finding it.”

Inside the mansion, they discovered an old hidden room.

A room that had not been opened in decades.

Inside was a single object.

A black wooden box.

Daniel recognized it immediately.

The same symbol as his father’s old documents.

The Carter symbol.

He opened it.

Inside was a letter.

And one key.

The letter was addressed to him.

Daniel.

His hands trembled.

He opened it.

His father’s handwriting appeared.

If you found this, then Edward has returned.

Daniel froze.

The letter continued.

You need to understand something.

Your grandfather did not disappear.

He was removed.

Daniel looked up.

Everyone was silent.

He kept reading.

Edward Carter was not the beginning of our family’s darkness.

He was trying to escape it.

Daniel stopped.

“What?”

Emma looked at him.

He did.

The person who controls Edward is the real enemy.

Daniel felt cold.

His grandfather.

The man he believed was the villain.

Was also controlled by someone else.

The letter continued.

Daniel, if you are reading this, it means I failed.

But I left you one advantage.

You are not alone.

At the bottom was a name.

A name Daniel had never seen.

A name that changed everything.

Catherine Carter.

Daniel looked at the paper.

“Who is Catherine?”

Nobody answered.

Then Lucas spoke.

His face had gone pale.

“Your aunt.”

Daniel turned.

“My aunt?”

Lucas nodded.

“The daughter Edward erased from history.”

The room became silent.

“Why?”

Lucas looked toward the window.

“Because she was the only person who knew the truth.”

Daniel stared.

“What truth?”

Lucas whispered:

“The person controlling this entire empire…”

A pause.

“Is not Edward.”

Daniel’s heart tightened.

“Then who?”

Lucas looked at him.

“The person who killed your father.”

At that exact moment…

A phone rang inside the mansion.

Everyone froze.

The call was coming from an old landline.

A phone that should not have worked.

Daniel slowly picked it up.

A woman’s voice answered.

Calm.

Confident.

Familiar.

“Hello, Daniel.”

His blood turned cold.

Because he recognized the voice.

It was the same voice from the old recordings.

The voice that had threatened his father.

The voice that had ordered everything.

The woman whispered:

“You finally found the truth.”

A pause.

“Now let me show you what your father really died for.”

The call ended.

Daniel stared at the phone.

Because after twenty years…

The person behind the Carter family’s destruction had finally spoken.

May you like

And her name was:

Catherine Carter.
