CHAPTER 4 — THE PARTNER WHO BETRAYED HIM

Daniel stared at the photograph on his screen.
For several seconds, his mind refused to accept what his eyes were seeing.
Vanessa.
Standing beside Alexander Reed.
His best friend.
His business partner.
The man who had stood beside him when Voss International Holdings was nothing more than a small office with three employees and a dream.
The man who had watched Daniel build everything from nothing.
The man who had been there when Daniel lost his parents.
The man who had promised:
"Your battles are my battles."
Daniel looked at the image again.
There was no mistake.
The two people he trusted most were standing together.
Planning something.
But the question that burned inside him was simple.
How long?
How long had they been lying to him?
The next morning, Daniel arrived at Reed & Voss Tower.
The building had once represented everything they created together.
Two names.
One empire.
A partnership built on loyalty.
At least, that was what Daniel believed.
Alexander’s assistant immediately stood when Daniel entered.
“Mr. Carter, Mr. Reed wasn’t expecting—”
“I know.”
Daniel didn’t slow down.
The assistant looked nervous.
“Should I tell him you’re here?”
Daniel pressed the elevator button.
“No.”
The doors opened.
“I’ll tell him myself.”
Alexander Reed’s office was exactly as Daniel remembered.
Modern.
Expensive.
Perfectly organized.
A wall filled with awards.
Photographs of success.
Including one photograph of Daniel and Alexander shaking hands on the day they officially launched their company.
Daniel stopped for a moment.
He remembered that day.
They were younger.
Exhausted.
But hopeful.
Alexander had smiled and said:
“One day, everyone will know our names.”
Daniel believed him.
Now he wondered if Alexander had always planned for only one name to survive.
“You look like you haven’t slept.”
Alexander’s voice came from behind him.
Daniel turned.
Alexander stood near the doorway.
A confident smile.
A calm expression.
Exactly the same man everyone trusted.
“Long flight?” Alexander asked.
Daniel stared at him.
“No.”
A pause.
“Long betrayal.”
The smile disappeared.
Only slightly.
But Daniel noticed.
“What are you talking about?”
Daniel placed his phone on the desk.
The photograph appeared.
Alexander looked at it.
For the first time, his confidence cracked.
Only for a second.
But it was enough.
Daniel saw it.
“You know why I’m here.”
Alexander slowly closed the office door.
“Daniel…”
“No.”
Daniel’s voice was controlled.
“I don’t want excuses.”
Alexander sighed.
“You think I betrayed you.”
“I don’t think.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“I know.”
The room became silent.
Then Alexander did something unexpected.
He laughed.
Not loudly.
Not nervously.
Almost sadly.
“You still believe everything is simple.”
Daniel narrowed his eyes.
“What does that mean?”
Alexander walked toward the window.
“It means you still think this is about Vanessa.”
“It isn’t?”
“No.”
Alexander turned around.
“This is about you.”
Daniel froze.
“What?”
Alexander looked at him.
“You built an empire and convinced yourself loyalty would protect it.”
His expression hardened.
“But loyalty is only valuable when people have something to gain.”
Daniel felt anger rising.
“Did you steal from me?”
Alexander didn’t answer.
That answer was enough.
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“How much?”
Alexander looked away.
“You don’t want to know.”
“I asked how much.”
A long silence.
“$12 million.”
The number hit the room like a weapon.
Daniel stared.
“Twelve million?”
Alexander nodded.
Daniel took a step back.
“Over what period?”
“Three years.”
The betrayal became heavier.
Not because of the money.
Because of the time.
Three years.
Three years of handshakes.
Three years of meetings.
Three years of calling this man family.
“You were stealing from me for three years.”
Alexander’s voice remained calm.
“I was protecting the company.”
Daniel almost laughed.
“Protecting?”
“Yes.”
Alexander walked toward the desk.
“You don’t understand what was happening behind the scenes.”
“Then explain.”
Alexander looked at him.
“Your company was collapsing.”
Daniel’s expression changed.
“No.”
“Yes.”
Alexander opened a drawer.
He removed a file.
“Three years ago, one of our biggest investments failed.”
Daniel looked confused.
“That was handled.”
“No.”
Alexander placed the file down.
“You handled the public version.”
Daniel opened it.
Inside were financial reports.
Hidden losses.
Private debts.
Emergency loans.
Daniel’s eyes moved across the pages.
Something was wrong.
Very wrong.
“You hid this from me.”
Alexander nodded.
“Because you would have destroyed everything trying to fix it.”
Daniel looked up.
“And your solution was stealing?”
Alexander’s face hardened.
“My solution was survival.”
Daniel left the office with more questions than answers.
Alexander had admitted stealing.
But something bothered him.
The numbers didn’t match.
The missing money from the company was $12 million.
The secret accounts showed more than $15 million.
Three million was still missing.
Someone else had taken it.
Someone Alexander was protecting.
Then Daniel remembered the photograph.
Vanessa wasn’t standing beside Alexander like an employee.
She was standing beside him like an equal.
Partners.
Not accomplices.
Partners.
That evening, Daniel returned to the hospital.
Emma immediately noticed something was wrong.
“What happened?”
Daniel sat beside her.
“Alexander admitted stealing from the company.”
Emma’s face changed.
“Your partner?”
He nodded.
“How much?”
“Twelve million.”
She was silent.
“But?”
Daniel looked at her.
“How did you know there was a but?”
“Because you’re not angry.”
He stared.
Emma continued.
“You’re thinking.”
Daniel looked down.
“There’s more missing.”
“How much?”
“I don’t know.”
Emma frowned.
“Then find out.”
Daniel smiled faintly.
“You always make everything sound simple.”
“It’s not simple.”
She looked toward the hospital window.
“But the truth usually is.”
Daniel held her hand.
Then his phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
One message.
STOP LOOKING INTO THE ACCOUNTS.
Daniel stared.
Another message appeared.
YOUR WIFE ALMOST DIED BECAUSE YOU ASKED TOO MANY QUESTIONS.
His expression changed.
Emma noticed.
“What is it?”
Daniel didn’t answer.
Because another image arrived.
A picture taken from outside the hospital.
Emma’s hospital room window.
Taken only minutes earlier.
Someone was watching them.
Daniel immediately stood.
He looked around the room.
Nothing.
No one.
But the message continued.
NEXT TIME, THE CAMERA WON’T BE THE ONLY THING THAT BREAKS.
Daniel’s blood turned cold.
This wasn’t just financial betrayal anymore.
Someone was willing to hurt his family.
And whoever was behind it was close enough to watch them.
Close enough to know their every move.
Daniel looked at Emma.
Then at their unborn children.
A decision formed.
He was done investigating quietly.
He was done giving people chances.
The people who attacked his family had made one mistake.
They thought Daniel Carter was only a businessman.
They forgot who he was before he built an empire.
A survivor.
May you like
And now…
He was coming for everyone who betrayed him.
