CHAPTER 14 — THE BROTHER WHO WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO EXIST

The name remained on the screen.
VICTOR CARTER.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody moved.
The old family house felt like it had suddenly become a graveyard.
A place where every secret buried for decades had finally started crawling back into the light.
Daniel stared at Lucas.
His brother looked like he had seen a ghost.
Not because Victor was a stranger.
Because he wasn’t.
Lucas knew exactly who he was.
And that terrified Daniel more than anything.
“Who is Victor?”
Daniel’s voice was calm.
But everyone knew that calm was dangerous.
Lucas looked away.
“Daniel…”
“No.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“You don’t get to do this again.”
His voice became harder.
“Everyone keeps protecting me with silence.”
A pause.
“Everyone keeps deciding what truth I can handle.”
He pointed toward the screen.
“So tell me.”
His eyes locked on Lucas.
“Who is Victor Carter?”
Lucas remained silent for several seconds.
Then he finally spoke.
“He was my brother.”
Daniel froze.
The words felt impossible.
“Your brother?”
Lucas nodded.
“Yes.”
Daniel looked around the room.
“Then why didn’t I know?”
Because that was the question.
The question that had haunted his entire life.
How many people existed?
How many secrets had been hidden?
How many pieces of his own family had been stolen from him?
Lucas took a deep breath.
“Because Victor was erased.”
Daniel frowned.
“Erased?”
“From the family.”
Twenty-eight years earlier…
Before Daniel was born.
Before Voss International.
Before everything collapsed.
The Carter family had three sons.
Lucas.
Victor.
And Thomas.
Daniel’s father.
Three brothers raised under Edward Carter’s control.
But they were completely different.
Thomas believed power should protect.
Lucas believed power should be controlled.
Victor believed power should belong only to those strong enough to take it.
From a young age, Victor understood something the others did not.
Fear was more useful than loyalty.
People respected kindness.
But they obeyed fear.
And Victor wanted obedience.
Not respect.
“Your father hated what Victor became,” Lucas explained.
Daniel listened.
“Thomas believed Victor was dangerous.”
“How?”
Lucas looked at the old documents.
“Victor started building his own network.”
“Like Edward?”
Lucas shook his head.
“Worse.”
The room became silent.
“He didn’t want to inherit the Carter empire.”
Lucas looked at Daniel.
“He wanted to replace it.”
Emma listened carefully.
“What happened to him?”
Lucas’s expression darkened.
“Edward tried to stop him.”
Daniel looked surprised.
“Your grandfather?”
“Yes.”
The answer was unexpected.
“Edward wasn’t always the monster you think he was.”
Daniel remembered Catherine saying something similar.
Again.
Another contradiction.
Lucas continued.
“Edward discovered Victor was using the family’s resources for illegal operations.”
Daniel frowned.
“What kind of operations?”
Lucas hesitated.
Then answered:
“Manipulation.”
“Financial attacks.”
“Political influence.”
“Blackmail.”
A pause.
“Control.”
Daniel looked at Catherine.
“So Catherine was fighting Victor?”
Catherine remained silent.
That silence was an answer.
“Then why was Victor erased?”
Lucas looked at Daniel.
“Because Edward and Thomas made a decision.”
“What decision?”
“They removed him from the family records.”
Daniel stared.
“You mean they pretended he never existed.”
“Yes.”
“But he was alive.”
Lucas nodded.
“And he was angry.”
The old computer screen flickered again.
A video appeared.
Everyone turned.
Victor Carter appeared.
Older.
Cold.
A man whose face carried decades of resentment.
But there was something else.
Pain.
“I wondered when you would find this.”
Daniel stared.
The man on the screen looked directly at him.
“Hello, Daniel.”
Hearing his name from a stranger connected by blood felt unnatural.
“You have spent your entire life believing you were the last Carter son.”
Victor smiled slightly.
“You were wrong.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“Where is my wife?”
Victor ignored the question.
“You have your father’s eyes.”
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“Answer me.”
Victor smiled.
“You’re exactly like him.”
A pause.
“Always asking about others before yourself.”
Daniel clenched his fists.
Victor continued.
“That was Thomas’s weakness.”
The screen changed.
A picture appeared.
Thomas Carter.
Daniel’s father.
Standing beside Victor.
A family moment.
A moment Daniel had never seen.
Victor’s voice continued.
“Your father believed he could create a better world.”
A bitter laugh.
“He forgot that the world doesn’t reward good men.”
The video showed another image.
A document.
A signature.
Daniel leaned closer.
The name at the bottom shocked him.
Thomas Carter.
“What is that?”
Catherine stepped forward.
Her expression changed.
“No.”
Daniel looked at her.
“You know this.”
She looked afraid.
For the first time.
“What is it?”
Victor’s voice answered from the screen.
“The document that started everything.”
The screen zoomed in.
Daniel read the title.
CARTER SUCCESSION AGREEMENT.
His heart tightened.
“What is this?”
Victor answered:
“The agreement that decides who controls the Carter legacy.”
Daniel looked confused.
“My father never mentioned this.”
“Of course not.”
Victor smiled.
“Because he destroyed it.”
The room became tense.
Daniel looked at Catherine.
“Why?”
Catherine finally spoke.
“Because the agreement was wrong.”
“How?”
Her voice became quiet.
“Because it was written before we understood what Victor would become.”
Victor laughed from the screen.
“Interesting.”
Everyone turned.
His video continued.
“Catherine always believed she was smarter than everyone.”
A pause.
“She wasn’t.”
Daniel frowned.
“What are you talking about?”
Victor looked directly into the camera.
“The person who destroyed the Carter family wasn’t me.”
Silence.
“It was the person you all trusted.”
Daniel felt a chill.
Again.
Another hidden enemy.
Another betrayal.
“Who?”
Victor smiled.
“You already know.”
The screen went black.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Daniel’s phone vibrated.
A message.
From an unknown number.
One sentence:
ASK EMMA WHAT SHE FOUND BEFORE SHE WAS TAKEN.
Daniel looked at his wife.
Emma’s face changed.
Not fear.
Recognition.
Daniel noticed immediately.
“What is it?”
Emma hesitated.
Daniel’s voice softened.
“Emma.”
She looked down.
“There’s something I didn’t tell you.”
Everyone became silent.
“What?”
Emma took a deep breath.
“Before Vanessa attacked me…”
Daniel waited.
“I found something inside the trust documents.”
His expression changed.
“What?”
Emma looked at him.
“A hidden file.”
“What was inside?”
She swallowed.
“Your father’s personal records.”
Daniel froze.
“My father?”
Emma nodded.
“And one message.”
A pause.
“He wrote it for me.”
Daniel looked confused.
“Why would my father write something for you?”
Emma looked at him.
“Because he knew someone like me would eventually enter your life.”
The room became silent.
“What did it say?”
Emma looked at Daniel.
“The message was simple.”
She whispered:
Protect Daniel from the Carter bloodline.
Nobody moved.
Because suddenly the biggest question was no longer who the enemy was.
The question was:
Why had Daniel’s father trusted Emma…
A woman he had never met…
To protect his son?
And as the screen flickered back on one final time, another message appeared.
Not from Victor.
Not from Catherine.
From someone else.
Someone who had been watching everything.
THE FINAL HEIR HAS AWAKENED.
Daniel stared.
Because beneath the message was a symbol.
A symbol his father had drawn in the old letter.
The symbol of the original Carter bloodline.
And for the first time…
Daniel realized the truth.
May you like
The battle was not about inheriting the Carter empire.
It was about surviving it.
