CHAPTER 3 — THE MILLIONS THAT DISAPPEARED

The first thing Daniel noticed when he entered Voss International Holdings that morning was the silence.

Not the peaceful kind.

The kind that existed when people knew something was wrong but were pretending everything was normal.

Employees looked up as he walked through the glass lobby.

Some smiled.

Some greeted him.

But Daniel noticed the hesitation behind their eyes.

The company he built had always been full of confidence.

Energy.

Ambition.

But today, something felt different.

Like everyone was waiting for something to collapse.

Daniel walked directly toward the executive elevator.

No assistant.

No meetings.

No explanation.

He pressed the button for the top floor.

His private office.

The place where every major decision of his empire had been made.

But this time, he wasn’t there to make a decision.

He was there to uncover a betrayal.

Michael, his chief financial officer, was already waiting.

The moment the elevator doors opened, Daniel saw the expression on his face.

Concern.

Not surprise.

That bothered him.

“You knew something was wrong,” Daniel said.

Michael looked down.

“I suspected.”

Daniel stepped into the office.

“And you didn’t tell me?”

Michael closed the door behind him.

“Because I didn’t have proof.”

Daniel placed the laptop on the desk.

“I have proof.”

He opened the security footage.

The image of Vanessa stealing the documents appeared on the screen.

Michael watched silently.

When Vanessa opened the folder containing company records, his face changed.

Daniel noticed.

“You recognize those files.”

Michael didn’t answer.

“Michael.”

The CFO took a deep breath.

“Yes.”

Daniel leaned forward.

“Explain.”

Michael walked to the window.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then:

“Eight months ago, we noticed irregular transfers from one of the company’s investment accounts.”

“How much?”

Michael looked back.

“Initially?”

Daniel waited.

“Three hundred thousand dollars.”

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“That’s not enough to create this reaction.”

“No.”

Michael opened a folder.

“That was only the beginning.”

He placed several documents on the desk.

Daniel looked down.

Numbers.

Dates.

Transfers.

Hidden accounts.

His eyes moved faster.

Then slower.

Because the amount started becoming impossible to ignore.

“$2.4 million?”

Michael nodded.

Daniel looked up.

“That’s missing?”

“Yes.”

“From my company?”

“Yes.”

Daniel picked up another page.

“Over what period?”

“Six months.”

A cold feeling moved through him.

Six months.

The same time period Vanessa’s lifestyle had suddenly changed.

The same time period she started buying expensive jewelry.

The same time period she began asking Daniel for financial favors.

Coincidence?

Daniel no longer believed in coincidences.

“Who approved these transfers?”

Michael hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

“Who?”

Michael lowered his voice.

“Your sister.”

The room became completely silent.

Daniel stared at him.

“No.”

Michael didn’t argue.

He simply placed another document on the desk.

A signature.

A digital authorization.

Vanessa Carter.

Daniel stared at the name.

His entire life, he had protected Vanessa.

Their parents died when he was young.

He had been seventeen.

Vanessa had been fourteen.

He remembered promising his mother:

I’ll take care of her.

And he had.

He paid for her education.

Bought her a house.

Covered her debts.

Gave her opportunities most people never received.

He never saw her as a responsibility.

He saw her as family.

But now…

Family was the person who knew exactly where to hurt him.

“She knew about the trust fund,” Daniel said quietly.

Michael nodded.

“She knew because she had access to some internal financial information.”

Daniel looked at him.

“How?”

Michael opened another file.

“Someone inside the company gave her access.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“So Vanessa isn’t working alone.”

“No.”

“Who?”

Michael hesitated again.

Daniel noticed.

“Michael.”

The CFO looked uncomfortable.

“There’s something else.”

“What?”

Michael placed a final document on the desk.

“This account wasn’t just stealing money.”

Daniel looked at the paper.

It was a transfer record.

A large one.

$5 million.

The destination account was hidden.

But the description caught his attention.

EMERGENCY RESTORATION FUND.

Daniel frowned.

“What is this?”

Michael answered slowly.

“Someone was replacing money that had already disappeared.”

The words hit differently.

Replacing.

Not stealing.

Covering.

Daniel leaned back.

“So someone stole from me…”

“Yes.”

“And then used the trust fund to cover the missing money.”

“Yes.”

The realization was worse than he expected.

Vanessa didn’t want his children’s money because she wanted luxury.

She needed it because something much larger was collapsing.

“Who was responsible for the missing funds?”

Michael looked at him.

“We’re still trying to identify the final account holder.”

Daniel stood.

“No.”

Michael looked confused.

“No?”

Daniel picked up his phone.

“We’re not trying anymore.”

He opened the security footage again.

Vanessa entering his office.

Opening the drawer.

Taking the folder.

Then he paused the video.

“Someone wanted these documents destroyed.”

Michael nodded.

“Yes.”

Daniel looked at the screen.

“Which means these documents contain something they’re afraid of.”

He closed the laptop.

“Find every person who accessed these files.”

Michael nodded.

“I’ll start immediately.”

“And Michael?”

“Yes?”

“Do it quietly.”

Michael understood.

Daniel wasn’t looking for a confrontation.

Not yet.

He was hunting.

That afternoon, Daniel returned to the hospital.

Emma was awake, staring out the window.

She looked smaller than she ever had.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

The strongest woman he knew had been forced into a moment of helplessness.

Daniel sat beside her.

“I found something.”

Emma looked at him.

“About Vanessa?”

“Yes.”

“What did she do?”

Daniel took a breath.

“She stole from the company.”

Emma was silent.

“How much?”

“Millions.”

Her eyes widened.

“But why attack me?”

Daniel looked away.

“Because she was desperate.”

Emma touched her stomach.

“Our babies…”

Daniel immediately took her hand.

“She won’t get near you again.”

Emma looked at him.

“Daniel, this isn’t just about Vanessa.”

He looked surprised.

“What do you mean?”

“She knew exactly where the camera was.”

Daniel froze.

“She destroyed it because she knew she was being recorded.”

Emma’s voice was quiet.

“She planned this.”

Daniel felt a chill.

Emma continued.

“She wanted you to see me as the problem.”

Daniel stared at his wife.

Even after everything, she was still thinking clearly.

Still analyzing.

Still helping him.

“You’re right.”

Emma squeezed his hand.

“Then don’t just punish Vanessa.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Find everyone involved.”

For the first time since that night…

Daniel smiled slightly.

Not because anything was funny.

Because he remembered who Emma was.

She wasn’t weak.

She wasn’t a victim.

She was the woman who stood beside him when he built everything.

And now, together, they were going to find the people who tried to destroy them.

That night, Daniel received an encrypted email.

No sender.

No subject.

Only one attachment.

A photograph.

He opened it.

His face changed instantly.

It was Vanessa.

Standing beside someone.

Someone Daniel knew very well.

Someone he trusted.

Under the picture was a single sentence:

“Your sister was never the mastermind.”

Daniel stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

“Ask your best friend where the missing millions went.”

Daniel stopped breathing.

Because the person standing beside Vanessa…

Was the last person he ever expected.

May you like

His own business partner.

Alexander Reed.
