CHAPTER 15 — THE HIDDEN MESSAGE FROM HIS FATHER

The message remained on the screen.

THE FINAL HEIR HAS AWAKENED.

Daniel stared at the words.

Not because he understood them.

Because he didn’t.

And that frightened him more.

For years, Daniel believed his greatest battle was building an empire.

Proving himself.

Surviving without his parents.

Creating something strong enough that nobody could ever take it away.

But now he realized something terrifying.

The empire was never the goal.

It was the battlefield.

And his family had been fighting a war long before he was born.

A war that had finally reached him.

“Emma.”

His voice was softer now.

She looked at him.

Daniel had faced enemies without hesitation.

But with Emma…

With Emma, he was different.

Because she was the only person in this entire nightmare who had never treated him like a Carter.

A billionaire.

An heir.

A weapon.

She treated him like Daniel.

The man.

Not the name.

“What did my father write?”

Emma looked at the old documents in her hands.

“I didn’t understand it at first.”

She took a deep breath.

“Because I thought it was impossible.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“Tell me everything.”

Before the attack.

Before Vanessa entered the house.

Before the world collapsed.

Emma had been reviewing the trust documents.

She wasn’t looking for secrets.

She wasn’t searching for power.

She was trying to protect their children.

The trust had been created for the twins before they were even born.

That alone was strange.

But then she noticed something.

A hidden layer inside the legal files.

A message encrypted beneath the financial information.

Something nobody would find unless they knew where to look.

Inside was a letter.

Not addressed to Daniel.

Not addressed to Edward.

Not addressed to Catherine.

It was addressed to her.

Emma Carter.

Daniel looked confused.

“Why would my father know your name?”

Emma shook her head.

“He didn’t.”

“Then how?”

She opened the old file.

Inside was a copy of the message.

Daniel read the first line.

His hands slowly tightened.

If you are reading this, then Daniel has finally found someone he trusts more than the Carter name.

Daniel stopped.

Those words hurt.

Because they sounded exactly like his father.

Thomas knew him.

Even after death.

He continued reading.

My son was raised to believe strength means carrying everything alone.

A pause.

That belief almost destroyed me.

Daniel lowered the paper.

Emma watched him carefully.

The letter continued.

The Carter family has spent generations searching for power.

But power without love becomes destruction.

Daniel looked up.

“He knew.”

Emma nodded.

“He knew the family would hurt me.”

“No.”

She corrected him.

“He knew the family would try to use you.”

Silence.

The difference mattered.

Daniel continued reading.

If Daniel chooses a partner who can protect him from his own blood, then she is not his weakness.

She is his greatest defense.

Daniel looked at Emma.

His eyes softened.

Because for the first time, he understood something.

His father had not left him money.

Not an empire.

Not protection.

He had left him trust.

The one thing the Carter family had destroyed for generations.

Lucas moved closer.

“What else?”

Emma turned the page.

“There was another section.”

Her expression changed.

A warning.

Daniel noticed.

“What?”

She looked at him.

“It mentioned the twins.”

Everyone became silent.

Daniel’s heart tightened.

“What did it say?”

Emma read slowly.

The children must never become symbols of the Carter legacy.

They must never be raised to serve the family’s ambition.

A pause.

They must be free.

Daniel closed his eyes.

Because that was the first thing his father had said that sounded like a father.

Not a businessman.

Not a Carter.

A father.

Then Emma reached the final paragraph.

Her hands trembled.

Daniel noticed.

“What?”

She looked at him.

“This is why Catherine wants them.”

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Why?”

Emma handed him the page.

Daniel read.

The original Carter inheritance does not belong to the oldest son.

His eyes moved across the words.

It belongs to the child who carries the mark.

Daniel froze.

“The birthmark.”

Lucas looked shocked.

“What?”

Daniel remembered the old photograph.

The baby.

The mark on the wrist.

His own wrist.

Emma continued.

The mark identifies the true successor of the original Carter bloodline.

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel slowly looked down at his own hand.

The birthmark he had never cared about.

The mark his mother used to kiss when he was young.

The mark everyone said was meaningless.

Was not meaningless.

Suddenly, the mansion security system activated.

Everyone turned.

A red light flashed.

Someone had entered.

Michael checked the cameras.

His face changed.

“Daniel…”

“What?”

“There are people outside.”

“How many?”

Michael hesitated.

“Too many.”

Daniel immediately moved toward Emma.

But Catherine stopped him.

“Wait.”

Daniel looked at her.

“You don’t give me orders.”

“No.”

Her expression was serious.

“But you need to understand.”

A pause.

“They are not here for you.”

Daniel looked outside.

“Then who?”

Catherine looked at Emma.

“The heir.”

The doors opened.

A group of armed men entered.

But they were not Catherine’s men.

Not Victor’s.

Not Edward’s.

A different organization.

A symbol was displayed on their jackets.

A symbol Daniel had never seen.

Except…

His father’s letter.

The original Carter symbol.

Daniel froze.

“These people…”

Lucas whispered:

“They’re the guardians.”

Daniel looked at him.

“Guardians of what?”

Lucas stared at the approaching group.

“The original Carter legacy.”

The leader stepped forward.

An older man with gray hair.

He looked at Daniel.

Then Emma.

Then the twins.

“You finally found them.”

Daniel stepped in front of Emma.

“Who are you?”

The man looked at him.

“My name is Gabriel Stone.”

A pause.

“I served your father.”

Daniel narrowed his eyes.

“My father had guards?”

“No.”

Gabriel shook his head.

“He had protectors.”

Daniel looked confused.

“Why are you here?”

Gabriel looked toward Emma.

“Because the child has been identified.”

Daniel’s face changed.

“What child?”

Gabriel looked at Emma’s stomach.

“The one who carries the mark.”

Everyone froze.

Emma immediately protected her stomach.

“They’re not taking my children.”

Gabriel looked at her.

“We’re not here to take them.”

A pause.

“We’re here because someone else is.”

A screen inside the mansion suddenly turned on.

Victor appeared.

His expression was calm.

“You found the guardians.”

Daniel stared.

Victor smiled.

“But you still don’t know the truth.”

Daniel stepped toward the screen.

“Where is Catherine?”

Victor ignored him.

“The mark doesn’t identify the heir.”

Silence.

“What?”

Victor continued:

“It identifies the person who can unlock the inheritance.”

Daniel felt cold.

“So who is the heir?”

Victor smiled.

“That’s the secret your father died protecting.”

The screen changed.

A document appeared.

A birth certificate.

Daniel stared.

His blood ran cold.

Because the name on the document was not his.

Not Lucas.

Not Victor.

It belonged to someone else.

Someone who had been hidden from the entire Carter family.

EMMA CARTER.

Nobody spoke.

Daniel turned slowly toward his wife.

Emma looked just as shocked.

“I didn’t know.”

But Daniel believed her.

Because Emma looked terrified.

Not guilty.

Terrified.

Victor’s voice continued:

“The woman you married was never chosen by accident.”

A pause.

“She was the missing piece.”

The screen went black.

Daniel looked at Emma.

The woman he loved.

The woman carrying his children.

The woman he thought entered his life by chance.

Was connected to the Carter legacy from the beginning.

And now the biggest mystery remained:

Who was Emma Carter before she became Daniel’s wife?
