CHAPTER 6 — THE SECRET HIS FATHER DIED TO PROTECT

The voice disappeared.

But the words remained.

“Your father didn’t die because of an accident.”

Daniel stood in the darkness of his office, phone still pressed against his ear.

The call had lasted less than thirty seconds.

No name.

No explanation.

Only a sentence that had shattered everything he thought he knew.

For twenty years, Daniel had lived with the same memory.

A rainy night.

A phone call.

A police officer standing at the front door.

A carefully chosen sentence:

"Your parents were involved in a tragic accident."

That was what everyone told him.

An accident.

A word that ended conversations.

A word that made people stop asking questions.

But now…

Someone had just ripped that word apart.

Daniel slowly lowered the phone.

His hands were shaking.

Not from fear.

From anger.

Because if someone had murdered his father…

If someone had taken his parents from him…

Then every year he spent believing a lie was another year stolen from him.

Emma noticed immediately.

Daniel walked into the hospital room carrying something heavier than exhaustion.

Something different.

She had always been able to read him.

Even when the rest of the world saw a powerful businessman.

A billionaire.

A man who never lost control.

Emma saw the person underneath.

The man who carried every burden alone.

“Daniel?”

He looked at her.

For a moment, he said nothing.

Then he sat beside her.

“I found something about my father.”

Emma watched him carefully.

“What happened?”

Daniel looked down at the envelope in his hand.

“My father knew something was coming.”

Emma’s expression changed.

“What do you mean?”

“He left me a letter.”

He handed it to her.

She read silently.

The more she read, the more serious her face became.

“He knew someone would come after you.”

Daniel nodded.

“He knew someone would try to destroy what he built.”

Emma looked at him.

“Who?”

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

Because he finally understood something terrifying.

The person who attacked their family wasn’t creating a new crime.

They were continuing an old one.

That afternoon, Daniel met Jonathan Pierce at a private location outside the city.

No offices.

No cameras.

No employees.

Just two men sitting across from each other with a table full of secrets.

Jonathan placed a thick folder down.

“I investigated your father’s death.”

Daniel stared at him.

“And?”

Jonathan opened the folder.

“The official report was incomplete.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Incomplete how?”

“The brakes on your father’s car failed.”

Daniel froze.

“The brakes?”

Jonathan nodded.

“The accident happened on a mountain road. The vehicle lost control.”

Daniel looked at the documents.

“So someone tampered with it.”

“Yes.”

The word was simple.

But it carried twenty years of pain.

“Why wasn’t this discovered?”

“Because the investigation was controlled.”

Daniel looked up.

“By who?”

Jonathan hesitated.

Then answered:

“Someone with influence.”

Daniel already knew.

“Richard Vale.”

Jonathan said nothing.

Silence was confirmation.

Richard Vale.

The name had followed Daniel his entire life.

A man who appeared in magazines.

A man who donated millions to charities.

A man everyone described as brilliant and generous.

But Daniel remembered his father’s warning.

"Never trust a man who smiles while destroying someone."

At the time, he thought it was bitterness.

Now he wondered if it was survival.

Jonathan opened another file.

“This is where things become strange.”

Daniel looked at him.

“What?”

“Your father wasn’t just investigating Richard Vale.”

“What was he doing?”

“He was building a case against him.”

Jonathan removed several documents.

“These are copies of financial records your father collected before he died.”

Daniel scanned the pages.

Illegal transfers.

Hidden companies.

Fraudulent acquisitions.

Richard Vale had built his fortune on buying companies from people who were forced into desperation.

But there was something else.

A pattern.

Every company he destroyed had one thing in common.

They belonged to people who refused to work with him.

Daniel’s father was one of them.

“Why didn’t my father expose him?”

Jonathan looked at him.

“Because he discovered something bigger.”

“What?”

Jonathan placed the final document on the table.

A list of names.

Daniel read the first few.

Executives.

Lawyers.

Bankers.

Then his eyes stopped.

One name.

He knew it.

Very well.

Alexander Reed.

Daniel felt his stomach tighten.

“No.”

Jonathan watched him.

“Your partner’s name appears repeatedly.”

Daniel shook his head.

“Alexander was twenty years old when my father died.”

“Yes.”

“So how could he be involved?”

Jonathan leaned forward.

“That’s the question.”

That night, Daniel returned to the hospital.

But before he reached Emma’s room, he saw someone standing at the end of the hallway.

Vanessa.

She looked different.

Not confident.

Not arrogant.

Scared.

For the first time, Daniel saw fear in her eyes.

“What are you doing here?”

Vanessa swallowed.

“I need to talk to you.”

Daniel stopped.

“You attacked my wife.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I know.”

“You could have killed my children.”

“I know.”

The fact that she admitted it shocked him.

Daniel stared.

“What do you want?”

Vanessa looked around.

Then whispered:

“I didn’t know it would go this far.”

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“You expect me to believe that?”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“I expect you to hate me.”

A pause.

“But I need you to know something.”

Daniel said nothing.

Vanessa lowered her voice.

“I didn’t plan the attack.”

The hallway became silent.

“You’re lying.”

“I’m not.”

“Then who did?”

Vanessa looked terrified.

And then she said a name Daniel never expected.

“Alexander.”

Daniel froze.

“What?”

Vanessa looked away.

“He told me if I didn’t get the money, we would both lose everything.”

Daniel studied her face.

For years, he knew Vanessa as selfish.

Manipulative.

Greedy.

But this fear was real.

“He forced you?”

Vanessa nodded.

“Not directly.”

She wiped her tears.

“He knew exactly what to say.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“Tell me everything.”

Vanessa hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Alexander has been controlling the company for years.”

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“How?”

“He wasn’t stealing money.”

She looked at him.

“He was preparing to take everything.”

Before Daniel could ask another question, the hospital lights suddenly flickered.

Everyone looked up.

The hallway cameras went black.

The same cameras.

The same way it happened at his house.

Daniel’s instincts immediately changed.

He grabbed Vanessa’s arm.

“Where’s Emma?”

They rushed toward the room.

The door was open.

The bed was empty.

Daniel stopped breathing.

“Emma?”

No answer.

The monitor continued beeping.

But his wife was gone.

On the hospital bed was a small piece of paper.

Daniel picked it up.

Three words were written:

YOU SHOULD HAVE STOPPED.

His hands tightened around the note.

Because now he understood.

The enemy was no longer hiding.

They had taken his wife.

May you like

They had crossed the final line.

And Daniel Carter was about to stop playing defense.
