CHAPTER 8 — THE WOMAN WHO RAISED HIM WAS THE ENEMY

Daniel had faced angry competitors.
He had faced lawsuits.
He had faced billion-dollar negotiations where one wrong decision could destroy everything he built.
But nothing prepared him for this.
Not the warehouse.
Not the threat.
Not even the possibility of losing his wife.
Because the person standing in front of him was not a stranger.
She was a memory.
A part of his childhood.
A person he had trusted before he even understood what trust meant.
Evelyn Carter.
The woman who held his hand at his parents’ funeral.
The woman who cooked his favorite meals when he was sixteen and struggling to accept that he was suddenly alone.
The woman who told him:
"Daniel, family is not always the people you are born with. Sometimes, family is the person who stays."
For twenty years, he believed she stayed.
Now he wondered…
Was she protecting him?
Or was she protecting the truth?
The warehouse was silent.
Daniel stared at her.
His mind was fighting between memories and reality.
“Where is Emma?”
Evelyn’s expression changed.
Not with fear.
With sadness.
“She’s safe.”
Daniel’s eyes hardened.
“She’s eight months pregnant.”
“I know.”
“She was taken from a hospital.”
“I know.”
His voice became colder.
“Then you know exactly what you’ve done.”
Evelyn looked down.
“I never wanted it to happen this way.”
Daniel almost laughed.
That sentence.
Again.
Everyone involved used the same excuse.
No one wanted it to happen.
But everyone made choices.
“You were there when my parents died.”
Evelyn froze.
Daniel stepped closer.
“You told me it was an accident.”
Silence.
“You looked me in the eyes and watched me believe that lie for twenty years.”
A tear appeared in Evelyn’s eyes.
“Daniel…”
“No.”
His voice cracked for the first time.
“You don’t get to say my name like you’re still the person who protected me.”
The woman who raised him looked away.
And that hurt more than anger.
Because guilt meant he was right.
“Your father was not perfect.”
Daniel stared.
“What does that mean?”
Evelyn took a breath.
“It means your father discovered something that put all of you in danger.”
“Richard Vale?”
Her eyes moved to him.
Daniel knew immediately.
“Yes.”
Evelyn whispered:
“He was not just a businessman.”
The warehouse suddenly felt colder.
“He built his empire by destroying anyone who refused to work with him.”
Daniel clenched his fists.
“My father found out.”
“Yes.”
“And you helped him hide it?”
Evelyn looked at him.
“No.”
A pause.
“I helped him survive.”
Daniel frowned.
“What?”
Evelyn walked toward an old table.
She placed a small box on it.
“Your father knew Richard would come after him.”
Daniel looked at the box.
“He prepared everything.”
Inside was a collection of documents.
Photos.
Letters.
Records.
Evidence.
Evelyn continued:
“Your father knew someone close to him was giving Richard information.”
Daniel’s face changed.
“Who?”
Evelyn looked at him.
“That is the question your father died trying to answer.”
Daniel opened the first document.
A list of names.
Executives.
Investors.
Employees.
Then one name appeared.
His breathing stopped.
Alexander Reed.
Again.
The same name.
The same betrayal.
“He was involved?”
Evelyn nodded.
“But not alone.”
Daniel looked up.
“Vanessa?”
“No.”
Evelyn’s voice became quieter.
“Someone much closer.”
Daniel stared.
“Who?”
Evelyn didn’t answer.
She didn’t have to.
Because Daniel already understood.
The warehouse door opened.
A man entered.
Daniel turned.
And his blood ran cold.
Alexander Reed.
The man Daniel thought he would never forgive.
The man who stole from him.
The man who betrayed him.
But now Daniel noticed something.
Alexander didn’t look like a winner.
He looked exhausted.
Broken.
Like someone who had been running from something for years.
“Daniel.”
Daniel’s expression was pure hatred.
“You kidnapped my wife.”
Alexander shook his head.
“No.”
“Then explain.”
“I didn’t take Emma.”
Daniel looked at Evelyn.
Then Alexander.
“You expect me to believe both of you?”
Alexander stepped closer.
“Daniel, you don’t understand what’s happening.”
“I understand perfectly.”
“You think I’m the enemy.”
Daniel said nothing.
Alexander continued:
“But I’m not the person you should fear.”
A bitter smile appeared.
“I’m the person who tried to stop them.”
Daniel stared.
“You stole twelve million dollars.”
Alexander looked down.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To keep Richard Vale away from the company.”
Daniel’s expression changed slightly.
“That makes no sense.”
Alexander looked at him.
“Because you don’t know the truth about your own company.”
He pointed at the documents.
“Your father didn’t build Voss International from nothing.”
Daniel frowned.
“What?”
“He inherited something.”
Evelyn looked away.
Daniel noticed.
“What did my father inherit?”
Alexander answered:
“The Carter Foundation.”
Daniel stared.
“The foundation?”
“It was worth hundreds of millions.”
A long silence.
“My father never had that kind of money.”
Alexander nodded.
“Because someone took it.”
Daniel felt the pieces connecting.
“The missing money…”
Alexander looked at him.
“Wasn’t missing.”
Daniel’s heart tightened.
“What?”
“It was stolen twenty years ago.”
The room went silent.
“By who?”
Alexander looked at Evelyn.
Daniel followed his eyes.
And the answer hurt more than he expected.
“No.”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“Daniel…”
“No.”
He stepped backward.
“Tell me I’m wrong.”
She said nothing.
That silence destroyed the last piece of trust.
The woman who raised him.
The woman who comforted him after his parents died.
The woman who told him family mattered.
Had known.
Maybe even been involved.
“You knew.”
Evelyn whispered:
“Yes.”
Daniel’s voice became broken.
“You knew who killed my parents.”
A tear rolled down her face.
“Yes.”
The word echoed.
Twenty years of lies.
Twenty years of grief.
Twenty years of believing he lost his family in an accident.
All because someone chose money over truth.
“Why?”
Evelyn looked at him.
“Because your father gave me a choice.”
Daniel stared.
“What choice?”
“To protect you…”
She paused.
“Or reveal everything and put you in danger.”
Daniel shook his head.
“That doesn’t explain anything.”
“No.”
Evelyn looked toward the dark hallway.
“Because the person who ordered your father’s death…”
Her voice trembled.
“Is still alive.”
Daniel’s expression changed.
“Who?”
Before Evelyn could answer—
The lights went out.
A gunshot echoed through the warehouse.
Everyone froze.
Daniel turned toward Emma’s direction.
“Emma!”
A second later, emergency lights activated.
Evelyn was on the floor.
Blood on her shoulder.
Alexander was gone.
And Emma was nowhere to be seen.
Daniel ran forward.
“Where is she?”
Evelyn looked up weakly.
Her voice barely audible.
“He took her…”
Daniel grabbed her.
“Who?”
Evelyn looked at him.
Fear filled her eyes.
Not for herself.
For him.
“The man your father was trying to expose.”
Daniel’s heart stopped.
“Richard Vale?”
Evelyn shook her head slowly.
“No.”
A pause.
“The man behind Richard.”
Daniel froze.
“There’s someone above him?”
Evelyn nodded.
Then whispered the name:
“Your grandfather.”
Daniel stepped back.
Impossible.
His grandfather had died years ago.
But Evelyn’s expression told him one thing.
She was not lying.
And suddenly Daniel realized something terrifying.
The enemy was not trying to steal his empire.
They were trying to erase his entire bloodline.
And Emma…
May you like
The woman carrying the next generation of Carter heirs…
Was the final piece they needed to destroy.
