Chapter 9 The Babies Who Were Switched

The basement seemed to shrink around them.
No one spoke.
No one moved.
Even the rain outside felt impossibly distant.
Only Sarah Whitmore's uneven breathing broke the silence.
Ethan stared at the faded hospital bracelet resting in his palm.
BABY GIRL — ROOM 317
His voice was barely audible.
"...What did you just say?"
Sarah closed her eyes.
"I've repeated those words in my nightmares for twelve years."
Grace knelt beside her.
"Sarah..."
"Tell us everything."
"No more secrets."
Sarah nodded slowly.
"I promise."
Daniel handed her a bottle of water.
Her hands shook so violently that Ethan held it for her.
After taking a sip, she looked at Emma.
The little girl was sitting quietly beside Helen, hugging her stuffed rabbit.
Completely unaware that the next few minutes would change every life in the room.
Sarah smiled sadly.
"She has your eyes."
She looked at Ethan.
"And your smile."
Grace's heart pounded.
"Then..."
"Emma is Ethan's daughter?"
Sarah answered without hesitation.
"Yes."
A wave of relief washed over Ethan.
His eyes filled with tears.
He looked at Emma.
His daughter.
She had been standing only a few feet away all afternoon.
And he had never known.
Emma looked confused.
"Mommy..."
"Why is everybody crying?"
Grace pulled her close.
"Because..."
"...sometimes happy truths still hurt."
Emma didn't fully understand.
But she hugged her mother anyway.
Ethan swallowed hard.
"If Emma is our daughter..."
He looked at the bracelet.
"Then who belonged in Room 317?"
Sarah's smile disappeared.
"Margaret Bennett's granddaughter."
Silence.
Olivia slowly stepped backward.
"No..."
Sarah looked at her.
"I'm sorry."
"It's true."
Olivia's breathing became uneven.
"My mother..."
"...had another grandchild?"
Sarah nodded.
"Your older brother's baby."
The room fell silent again.
Mason frowned.
"I thought Olivia was an only child."
Olivia whispered,
"I wasn't."
Everyone turned toward her.
She stared at the floor.
"My brother..."
"...Andrew."
"He died."
Helen looked surprised.
"When?"
"My mother always said he died in a car accident."
Sarah slowly shook her head.
"No."
"He disappeared."
Olivia's face turned pale.
"What?"
Sarah looked directly at her.
"Your brother never died."
"He ran away."
Grace frowned.
"Why?"
Sarah answered quietly.
"Because he fell in love."
Helen closed her eyes.
"I remember."
Sarah nodded.
"He married a kindergarten teacher."
"Margaret Bennett considered her beneath the family."
Olivia whispered,
"...Emily."
Sarah smiled sadly.
"Yes."
"You remember her."
"I was eight."
"My mother told me Emily abandoned Andrew for another man."
Sarah shook her head.
"No."
"They fled together."
Ethan looked between them.
"What happened next?"
Sarah's expression darkened.
"Margaret found them."
No one interrupted.
Sarah continued.
"Emily was eight months pregnant."
"Andrew begged his mother to leave them alone."
"But Margaret wanted the baby."
Grace frowned.
"The baby?"
Sarah nodded.
"She believed a Bennett heir should never be raised by 'ordinary people.'"
Olivia covered her mouth.
"Oh God..."
Sarah continued.
"They escaped."
"They changed cities."
"They changed names."
"But Margaret always found them."
Ethan looked at Sarah carefully.
"So..."
"They came to your hospital."
Sarah nodded.
"Using fake identities."
"Emily went into labor first."
"Six minutes later..."
She looked at Grace.
"...you arrived."
Grace remembered that night vividly.
A violent thunderstorm.
The roads flooding.
Pain coming faster than expected.
Ethan had been away on a business trip.
Or so she believed.
She had been alone.
Sarah continued.
"Both babies were healthy."
"Both little girls."
She smiled faintly.
"They were beautiful."
Then her smile faded.
"An hour later..."
"Margaret Bennett arrived."
Olivia whispered,
"My mother..."
Sarah nodded.
"With lawyers."
"Security guards."
"And a court order."
Daniel frowned.
"What court order?"
Sarah laughed bitterly.
"It was fake."
"But nobody knew that."
Sarah's hands began shaking again.
"Margaret told us Emily was mentally unstable."
"She claimed the baby was in danger."
"We refused."
"So..."
She looked away.
"...she shut down the maternity floor."
Helen closed her eyes.
"I knew she was ruthless."
"I never imagined..."
Sarah interrupted softly.
"You haven't heard the worst part."
She looked directly at Ethan.
"You weren't overseas that week."
Ethan frowned.
"What?"
Grace looked at him.
"I thought you were in Singapore."
Sarah shook her head.
"No."
"You were here."
The room froze.
Ethan searched his memory.
"I..."
"I remember flying."
Sarah nodded.
"You did."
"But not to Singapore."
Daniel looked confused.
"Then where?"
Sarah answered.
"Seattle."
Mason frowned.
"That's impossible."
"I arranged Ethan's travel schedule."
Sarah nodded.
"I know."
"It was changed."
Grace looked stunned.
"Who changed it?"
Sarah whispered,
"Someone inside Carter Technologies."
Ethan's stomach tightened.
"My company..."
Sarah nodded.
"They made sure you were thousands of miles away..."
"...the night Emma was born."
Grace felt the room spinning.
"Then..."
"They planned everything."
Sarah answered quietly.
"Months in advance."
Olivia suddenly spoke.
"My mother couldn't have done all that alone."
Sarah nodded.
"She didn't."
Silence.
"There was another man."
Ethan frowned.
"Who?"
Sarah's expression became fearful.
"I never learned his real name."
"We only called him..."
She hesitated.
"...The Chairman."
Daniel immediately looked up.
"The Chairman?"
Sarah nodded.
"He never appeared in public."
"He never signed documents."
"He gave orders."
"And everyone obeyed."
Grace whispered,
"Even Margaret?"
Sarah looked directly at her.
"Especially Margaret."
The room suddenly felt colder.
Everything they had believed was wrong.
Margaret Bennett wasn't at the top.
She had been taking orders.
Emma quietly walked over to Ethan.
She reached up and took his hand.
"Daddy?"
The word came naturally.
Without hesitation.
Without fear.
Ethan's eyes filled with tears.
He gently knelt.
"Yes, sweetheart?"
Emma smiled.
"I knew you'd find us."
His heart broke.
He wrapped his arms around her.
"I should have found you years ago."
Emma hugged him tightly.
"It's okay."
"We're together now."
Grace watched them, tears streaming down her face.
For twelve years she had dreamed of this moment.
It had finally come.
Then Sarah's smile disappeared.
"I wish..."
"...that was the end of the story."
Everyone looked at her.
"It isn't."
She slowly reached into her coat pocket.
Hidden inside was a sealed hospital envelope.
The paper had yellowed with age.
Across the front, in red ink, were three handwritten words.
DO NOT DESTROY
Sarah handed it to Ethan.
"I kept this hidden for twelve years."
"What is it?"
She looked directly into his eyes.
"The original delivery records."
Ethan carefully opened the envelope.
Inside were two birth certificates.
One belonged to Emma Carter.
Father:
Ethan Carter
Mother:
Grace Mitchell
He smiled through tears.
Then he picked up the second certificate.
His smile vanished.
Father:
Andrew Bennett
Mother:
Emily Bennett
Baby:
Female
Status:
Transferred
Ethan frowned.
"Transferred where?"
Sarah's face went white.
She whispered,
"I don't know."
"I never found out."
"But I know one thing."
"What?"
Sarah looked at Olivia.
Then at Emma.
Then back at Ethan.
"The little girl born in Room 317..."
"...is still alive."
May you like
"And if The Circle finds her before we do..."
"They'll finally have the heir they've been searching for all these years."
