Chapter 12 The Last Witness

The basement felt colder than before.
No one spoke for nearly a minute.
Emma had fallen asleep again, her head resting against Ethan's shoulder.
For the first time in twelve years, he held his daughter without fear that someone would take her away.
He silently promised himself it would never happen again.
Then Daniel Brooks' phone vibrated.
He answered immediately.
"Brooks."
His expression changed.
"When?"
He glanced at Ethan.
"They found something in Margaret Bennett's old storage facility."
Two Hours Later
A convoy of black SUVs stopped outside an abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of Boston Harbor.
The building had once belonged to Bennett Holdings.
It had officially been closed for fifteen years.
Yet fresh tire tracks covered the wet pavement.
Someone had been here recently.
Very recently.
Daniel signaled his tactical team.
"Clear every entrance."
Within seconds, armed officers disappeared into the darkness.
Ethan stood beside Grace.
"You don't have to come inside."
Grace looked at him.
"I spent twelve years running."
She gently squeezed his hand.
"I'm done running."
Emma remained in the SUV with Helen and two female FBI agents Daniel trusted more than anyone else.
Before Ethan left, Emma grabbed his sleeve.
"Daddy?"
He smiled.
"Yes, sweetheart?"
"When you come back..."
She handed him a folded drawing.
"...don't forget."
He opened it.
It showed the same little blue house she always drew.
But this time, someone had added another sentence in careful handwriting.
Families always find each other.
Ethan kissed her forehead.
"They do."
Inside the warehouse...
Everything was covered in dust.
Rusted shelves stretched across the enormous room.
Old medical equipment.
Broken office furniture.
Stacks of forgotten documents.
Daniel frowned.
"This wasn't just storage."
Mason nodded.
"It looks more like an archive."
Olivia slowly walked toward an old filing cabinet.
One drawer refused to open.
Daniel forced it with a crowbar.
Inside were dozens of employee files.
Each carried a red stamp.
CLOSED
Then one folder caught Olivia's attention.
Unlike the others...
It had no name.
Only two words.
PROJECT HEIR
Everyone gathered around.
Ethan carefully opened the folder.
The first page wasn't a report.
It was a handwritten instruction.
Rule One
The heir must never know who they truly are.
Grace frowned.
"The heir..."
"The Bennett child."
Helen nodded.
The second page listed expenses.
Private schools.
Medical bills.
Apartment rentals.
Guard salaries.
Every payment covered eighteen years.
Whoever the missing Bennett heir was...
Someone had secretly financed her entire life.
Then Ethan turned another page.
A photograph slid onto the table.
A teenage girl.
Around seventeen.
Dark blonde hair.
Gray-blue eyes.
Standing outside a small public library wearing a volunteer badge.
She smiled naturally.
Completely unaware someone had been watching her.
Written underneath...
Current Identity: Lily Dawson
Grace stared at the picture.
"So she's alive."
Daniel nodded.
"And someone has monitored her since birth."
Olivia slowly reached for the photograph.
Tears filled her eyes.
"She..."
"...looks like my brother."
No one answered.
The resemblance was undeniable.
Another page contained surveillance reports.
Every birthday.
Every school graduation.
Every doctor's appointment.
Every job interview.
Someone had watched Lily Dawson her entire life.
Without ever revealing who she really was.
Grace whispered,
"That's not protection."
Daniel answered quietly.
"No."
"That's imprisonment."
Ethan continued reading.
Then suddenly stopped.
The next page listed a name.
Guardian
Beneath it...
Michael Dawson
Occupation:
Firefighter.
Status:
Deceased.
Grace frowned.
"He adopted her?"
Daniel shook his head.
"No adoption records."
Mason added,
"He simply raised her."
Olivia looked confused.
"Why him?"
Helen answered.
"Because Michael Dawson worked for someone."
Everyone looked at her.
"I remember him."
"He was one of the few honest men Margaret Bennett couldn't buy."
Ethan frowned.
"Then why would he raise the child?"
Helen smiled sadly.
"Because he stole her."
Silence.
"What?"
Grace whispered.
Helen nodded.
"He saved her."
She slowly sat down on an old wooden crate.
"I didn't know until years later."
"But Michael confessed everything to me."
Eighteen Years Earlier
The maternity ward had fallen into chaos.
Margaret Bennett's private security team had taken control of the floor.
Doctors received forged court orders.
Nurses were threatened.
The newborn Bennett baby had been taken from Emily's arms.
Emily screamed.
Andrew fought the guards.
Michael Dawson had been working as an emergency firefighter after responding to a nearby accident.
He wasn't supposed to be inside the hospital.
But he heard the screams.
He entered the maternity ward.
And witnessed something no one else dared to stop.
A newborn baby being carried toward a private elevator.
Michael followed.
Inside the underground parking garage...
He confronted one of Margaret's guards.
A fight broke out.
The guard fell.
Hit his head.
Died instantly.
Michael looked down at the crying infant.
Then made the most important decision of his life.
He picked her up...
Got into his ambulance...
And disappeared.
Back in the present...
Grace stared in disbelief.
"He rescued her."
Helen nodded.
"And spent the rest of his life hiding her."
Olivia quietly cried.
"My niece..."
"...grew up believing she had no family."
Daniel continued searching the folder.
"There are more recent reports."
He flipped through the pages.
Then froze.
"Ethan."
"What?"
"The surveillance stopped."
"When?"
Daniel looked up.
"Three weeks ago."
Mason frowned.
"Why?"
Daniel answered with one word.
"Missing."
Everyone looked at him.
"Lily Dawson disappeared."
Silence filled the warehouse.
Grace slowly whispered,
"So The Circle found her."
Daniel kept reading.
"No."
He looked genuinely confused.
"They lost her."
Ethan's eyes narrowed.
"What do you mean?"
"The last report says..."
He read aloud.
Subject vanished.
Current location unknown.
All surveillance compromised.
Chairman personally notified.
Helen slowly smiled for the first time that day.
"Then someone beat them."
Before anyone could speak again...
One of Daniel's agents ran into the warehouse.
"Sir!"
Daniel turned.
"What happened?"
"We found a hidden office upstairs."
"Anything inside?"
The agent nodded.
"One computer."
"It's still running."
Everyone hurried upstairs.
Unlike the rest of the warehouse...
The office looked untouched.
Someone had left in a hurry.
A desk lamp remained on.
Coffee still sat beside the keyboard.
The computer displayed a single open document.
Its title read:
LAST WITNESS
Ethan slowly moved the mouse.
A video file filled the screen.
Recorded only forty-eight hours earlier.
He clicked Play.
A man in his late sixties appeared.
Thin.
Gray beard.
Tired eyes.
He looked directly into the camera.
"My name..."
"...is Michael Dawson."
Grace gasped.
"But..."
"Helen said he was dead."
Helen frowned.
"He was supposed to be."
The man continued speaking.
"If you're watching this..."
"...they've probably found me."
He smiled sadly.
"I've been running for eighteen years."
"But I can't run anymore."
He reached beside him and lifted a framed photograph.
It showed a smiling teenage girl.
Lily Dawson.
"My daughter."
"No..."
He corrected himself.
"The daughter I promised to protect."
Ethan leaned closer.
Michael looked straight into the camera.
"If Ethan Carter is alive..."
"...tell him this."
Ethan's heartbeat quickened.
"Emma was never your greatest responsibility."
He paused.
"Finding Lily is."
"Because..."
Michael's voice broke.
"...she doesn't just carry the Bennett bloodline."
He took a long breath.
Then revealed the truth that changed everything.
"Lily Dawson is the only living person who knows the Chairman's real name."
The video suddenly cut to black.
At that exact moment...
A loud explosion rocked the warehouse.
The floor shook violently beneath their feet.
Fire erupted from the lower level.
Daniel shouted,
"Everyone out!"
As smoke filled the building...
Ethan looked one last time at the frozen screen.
May you like
Someone had found Michael Dawson.
And someone had tried to destroy the only evidence he had left behind.
