Chapter 14 Blood Never Lies

The words on Ava Reynolds' screen seemed to drain the warmth from the room.
YOU'RE ALREADY TOO LATE.
No sender.
No digital signature.
No traceable IP address.
Just six words.
Daniel Brooks unplugged the network cable immediately.
"Nobody touch anything."
Ava's fingers flew across the keyboard.
"They didn't break in."
"What?"
Ethan asked.
"They were already here."
Silence settled over the study.
Ava turned the monitor toward them.
"The file was hidden inside the Project Heir archive."
"It was programmed to appear..."
"...the moment we traced Lily's phone."
Grace felt a chill run down her spine.
"So they expected us to find her."
Daniel nodded grimly.
"And they wanted us to follow."
Thirty Minutes Later
Three black SUVs sped through downtown Boston under flashing lights.
Daniel's tactical unit blocked intersections as they raced toward South Station.
Ethan sat in the front passenger seat, his eyes fixed on the road.
Every passing second felt like another chance to lose someone.
Not again.
Never again.
His phone rested in his hand.
He replayed the last words Lily had spoken.
"I don't think it's my real name."
Michael Dawson had prepared her.
He had known this day would come.
Grace sat in the back beside Olivia.
Neither woman spoke.
Finally, Olivia broke the silence.
"If she's my brother's daughter..."
Grace looked at her.
"Then she's your family."
Olivia nodded slowly.
"I spent eighteen years believing I had no one left."
A tear rolled down her cheek.
"And all this time..."
"...my niece was alive."
South Station
Police sirens echoed beneath the steel roof.
Passengers had already been evacuated.
Federal agents secured every platform.
Daniel held up his phone.
"The signal ended near Platform Nine."
His team spread out.
Within minutes, one of the agents shouted.
"Over here!"
Everyone rushed toward an empty waiting area.
A backpack lay beneath a wooden bench.
Gray.
Worn.
Exactly like the one Lily had carried in the surveillance photos.
Ethan carefully unzipped it.
Inside were three things.
A change of clothes.
A paperback copy of To Kill a Mockingbird.
And a sealed envelope.
On the front, written in blue ink:
For Ethan Carter
Grace's heartbeat quickened.
"She left it."
Ethan opened the envelope.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
"If you're reading this..."
"Then Michael was right."
"One day you'd come looking for me."
"I'm sorry I called."
"I didn't know they were already watching."
"They've followed me since I was a child."
"Every school."
"Every job."
"Every apartment."
"I never understood why."
"Michael only told me one thing."
"If I ever heard the name Ethan Carter..."
"Run toward him."
"Not away."
"Because he was the only man powerful enough to stop them."
"If you're too late..."
"Don't waste time looking for me."
"Protect your daughter."
"She's in more danger than I am."
— Lily
The station fell silent.
Grace looked at Ethan.
"She knew."
Ethan nodded.
"Michael told her about Emma."
Daniel's radio suddenly crackled.
"Brooks."
A voice answered.
"We found blood."
Everyone turned.
One of the agents pointed toward the edge of the platform.
A small trail of fresh blood disappeared into a maintenance tunnel.
Daniel immediately drew his weapon.
"Move."
The tunnel stretched beneath the station for nearly two hundred yards.
The air smelled of rust and engine oil.
Halfway through...
They found the first body.
A man dressed in black tactical gear.
A raven tattoo marked his neck.
The Raven's organization.
But he hadn't been shot.
His neck had been broken.
Cleanly.
Professionally.
Daniel crouched beside him.
"This wasn't Lily."
Ethan frowned.
"How do you know?"
"He never saw his attacker."
They continued deeper into the tunnel.
A second body.
Then a third.
Every one of them belonged to The Circle.
Every one killed the same way.
Grace whispered,
"Who could do this?"
No one answered.
At the end of the tunnel stood an old maintenance room.
The steel door hung open.
Inside...
Chairs overturned.
Bullet holes in the walls.
Broken lights.
A violent fight had taken place.
And written across the concrete wall in fresh red paint were five chilling words.
YOU DON'T BELONG TO THEM.
Olivia stared at the message.
"That was for Lily."
Daniel nodded.
"Someone helped her escape."
Near the doorway, Ethan noticed something shining beneath the debris.
He bent down.
A silver firefighter's badge.
Engraved with the initials:
M.D.
Michael Dawson.
Grace picked it up carefully.
"He was here."
Daniel looked around the room.
"No."
He pointed toward the dust.
"Recently."
Ava's voice suddenly came through Daniel's earpiece.
"I found something."
Daniel activated the speaker.
"What is it?"
"I restored a deleted file from Michael Dawson's video."
Everyone stopped walking.
"You missed the ending."
"What ending?"
"The recording didn't stop."
"It was cut."
Ava took a deep breath.
"I recovered the final twenty-three seconds."
Back at the estate, Ava played the restored footage on every screen.
Michael Dawson appeared again.
He looked weaker.
Blood stained the sleeve of his shirt.
He glanced over his shoulder before speaking.
"If I don't survive..."
"...there's one person you must trust."
He reached into frame and held up an old photograph.
A smiling African-American man in his sixties stood beside him, both wearing firefighter uniforms.
"My captain."
"His name is..."
The image glitched.
Static filled the screen.
Then returned.
"...Benjamin Hayes."
Michael smiled faintly.
"He knows the truth."
"He was there the night I saved Lily."
"He has everything I couldn't keep."
Another burst of static.
Michael looked directly into the camera one last time.
"And Ethan..."
"If you're hearing this..."
"Never believe that blood alone makes a family."
He smiled.
"I wasn't Lily's father by birth."
"...but I was blessed to become her dad."
The screen went black.
Grace quietly wiped away a tear.
Even Daniel looked away.
Michael Dawson had never claimed to be a hero.
He had simply loved a little girl enough to risk everything.
Helen broke the silence.
"Benjamin Hayes..."
"I know that name."
Everyone looked at her.
"He retired five years ago."
"Where does he live?"
Helen frowned.
"I don't remember the exact address."
"But..."
"He owns a small lighthouse on the coast of Maine."
Daniel immediately searched public records.
"There."
He enlarged the screen.
Hayes Point Lighthouse
Near Portland, Maine.
The same city where Lily's trail had vanished three weeks earlier.
Ethan looked at Grace.
"We're going to Maine."
Grace nodded.
"This time..."
"We're bringing her home."
Just as Daniel was about to issue the order, his secure phone rang.
Only three people in the world had that number.
He answered instantly.
"This is Brooks."
The color drained from his face.
"What happened?"
Silence.
Then he slowly lowered the phone.
Ethan stepped forward.
"Daniel?"
Daniel looked at him with disbelief.
"Our agents just searched Benjamin Hayes' lighthouse."
Ethan's heart sank.
"What did they find?"
Daniel answered quietly.
"The lighthouse is empty."
Grace whispered,
"No..."
Daniel continued.
"But they found one thing."
"What?"
He looked directly at Ethan.
"A fresh DNA report."
"It confirms Emma Carter is your biological daughter."
Relief flooded Ethan for only a brief second.
Then Daniel finished the sentence.
"And..."
"The second DNA sample..."
"...belongs to Lily."
Olivia stepped closer.
"My niece?"
Daniel nodded.
"The test confirms it."
"Lily Dawson is the biological daughter of Andrew Bennett and Emily Bennett."
The room fell silent.
At last, the truth had been proven.
Emma was exactly who Grace had always known she was.
Lily was the rightful Bennett heir.
The lies had finally ended.
But before anyone could celebrate, Daniel's phone rang again.
This time, it was one of his field agents.
His voice trembled.
"Sir..."
"We're too late."
Daniel closed his eyes.
"What happened?"
May you like
The agent answered with three words that froze everyone in the room.
"Benjamin Hayes is dead."
