Chapter 16 Kidnapped Before Dawn

The words struck Ethan harder than any bullet ever could.
"Emma is gone."
For a heartbeat, the world stopped.
The crashing waves outside the lighthouse faded into silence.
The room spun.
"No..."
The word escaped Ethan's lips before he realized he had spoken.
Daniel Brooks tightened his grip on the phone.
"Our agents lost contact with the estate nine minutes ago."
Grace's face turned white.
"Helen?"
Daniel looked down.
"She wasn't hurt."
"But she was unconscious when the security team found her."
Grace stumbled backward.
"They took Emma..."
Without another word, Ethan sprinted out of the basement.
The others followed.
Within seconds, the helicopter blades roared to life.
As the aircraft lifted into the stormy sky, Ethan sat in complete silence.
His fists remained clenched.
His jaw locked.
Grace reached for his hand.
He squeezed it without taking his eyes off the darkness below.
"I found her..."
His voice cracked.
"...and I lost her again."
Grace shook her head.
"No."
"You are bringing our daughter home."
There was no hesitation in her voice.
Only certainty.
Carter Estate
Forty Minutes Earlier
Helen Bennett woke to the sound of laughter.
Emma.
The little girl was giggling downstairs.
Helen smiled.
It was nearly midnight.
Emma should have been asleep.
She slipped on her robe and walked into the hallway.
The mansion was unusually quiet.
Too quiet.
"Emma?"
No answer.
She followed the sound toward the library.
The door stood open.
Inside...
Emma was talking to someone.
Helen frowned.
"Sweetheart?"
Emma looked up happily.
"The firefighter came back."
Helen's blood froze.
"What firefighter?"
Emma pointed toward the fireplace.
"The nice man who gave me candy."
There was no one there.
Only shadows.
Helen stepped inside.
"Emma..."
Before she could finish—
A sharp sting pierced her neck.
She reached back instinctively.
A tiny dart.
Her vision blurred almost immediately.
She collapsed to the floor.
The last thing she saw...
Was a tall man in a black suit stepping out from behind the bookshelf.
A raven tattoo curved beneath his left ear.
The Raven.
He gently picked Emma up.
The little girl looked confused.
"Where are we going?"
The Raven smiled.
"Your daddy sent me."
Emma trusted him.
She wrapped her little arms around his neck.
And within seconds...
They disappeared into the night.
Present
The helicopter landed on the estate lawn.
Ethan jumped out before the skids fully touched the ground.
The mansion had become another crime scene.
Emergency lights flashed across the property.
Forensic teams moved through every room.
Grace rushed upstairs.
Helen sat on the edge of Emma's bed, wrapped in a blanket.
She looked devastated.
The moment she saw Ethan...
She burst into tears.
"I'm sorry..."
"I failed her."
Ethan knelt beside her.
"You didn't fail."
Helen shook her head.
"I should have protected her."
Grace embraced the older woman.
"They planned this."
"They knew exactly when we'd leave."
Daniel entered carrying a forensic report.
"The dart contained etorphine."
Grace frowned.
"Enough to kill?"
Daniel nodded.
"In a higher dose."
"They wanted Helen alive."
"Why?"
"So she'd tell us exactly what happened."
Helen wiped away her tears.
"There was something strange."
Everyone turned toward her.
"The man..."
"The Raven..."
"He wasn't wearing gloves."
Daniel looked surprised.
"So?"
Helen swallowed.
"He wanted me to see something."
"What?"
Helen closed her eyes.
"His wedding ring."
Silence.
"A ring?"
Ethan asked.
Helen nodded.
"Gold."
"With a blue sapphire."
Mason frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Helen whispered,
"I've seen it before."
She slowly looked toward Olivia.
"It belonged to your brother."
The room froze.
Olivia stared in disbelief.
"No."
"My brother's wedding ring?"
Helen nodded.
"The Raven was wearing Andrew Bennett's ring."
Grace whispered,
"That's impossible."
Olivia's voice trembled.
"My brother disappeared before Lily was born."
Helen answered quietly,
"That's what Margaret wanted everyone to believe."
Ethan looked at Daniel.
"Run facial recognition on Andrew Bennett."
Daniel hesitated.
"We already did."
"And?"
"He was declared legally dead."
Ethan's eyes narrowed.
"I didn't ask about the records."
"I asked about the man."
Daniel understood.
Within minutes, every archived photograph of Andrew Bennett appeared on the screen.
A smiling young man.
Kind eyes.
Dark hair.
Then Daniel placed one of the surveillance images beside it.
The Raven.
The tattoo obscured part of his jawline.
His beard was longer.
His hair darker.
But the shape of the ears...
The scar above his eyebrow...
The bone structure...
Daniel's expression changed.
"My God..."
Grace looked at him.
"What?"
"It's possible."
Olivia slowly covered her mouth.
"No..."
Daniel enlarged both images.
"The probability is eighty-nine percent."
Ethan whispered,
"The Raven..."
"...is Andrew Bennett."
The room exploded with disbelief.
"That's impossible!"
Grace said.
"He saved Lily!"
Helen shook her head.
"Or someone wanted us to believe he did."
Olivia collapsed into a chair.
"My brother wouldn't hurt a child."
"No."
Ethan agreed.
"He wouldn't."
Grace looked at him.
"Then why take Emma?"
Ethan stared at the comparison photos.
"Because he doesn't work for Mercer."
"What?"
"He works against him."
Daniel frowned.
"Explain."
Ethan pointed to the maintenance tunnel photos from South Station.
"The Raven killed three Circle operatives."
"He never touched Lily."
"He never hurt us."
"He could have killed Sarah."
"He didn't."
Grace slowly understood.
"He has been protecting Lily."
Ethan nodded.
"And now..."
"He has Emma."
Silence.
Mason frowned.
"If Andrew is alive..."
"Why hide for eighteen years?"
No one answered.
Because no one knew.
At that moment...
Daniel's computer emitted a notification.
A secure video file had arrived.
No sender.
No trace.
Only one line.
For Ethan Carter Only
Ethan clicked it.
The screen flickered.
Then...
Emma appeared.
She was sitting on a sofa wrapped in a blanket.
Completely unharmed.
She smiled brightly.
"Daddy!"
Ethan's eyes filled with tears.
"Emma!"
The little girl laughed.
"I'm okay!"
Grace stepped closer.
"Sweetheart!"
Emma waved excitedly.
"The nice man says you worry too much."
A man's voice came from behind the camera.
"Emma."
She looked back.
"Can I tell them?"
A pause.
Then...
"Yes."
Emma turned back to the screen.
"Daddy..."
"The nice man says..."
"...he's sorry he couldn't come home sooner."
The camera slowly moved.
A man stepped into view.
His face was no longer hidden.
No cap.
No mask.
No shadows.
Olivia gasped.
Tears streamed down her face.
"Andrew..."
The man looked older.
A scar crossed his cheek.
Gray streaks lined his dark hair.
But there was no doubt.
It was Andrew Bennett.
Alive.
He looked directly into the camera.
Then at Ethan.
"I know you think I kidnapped your daughter."
He gently rested a hand on Emma's shoulder.
"But if I had left her at your estate..."
"...Daniel Mercer would have had her before sunrise."
He paused.
"I've spent eighteen years protecting one little girl."
His eyes softened as he looked at Emma.
"I won't fail another."
The room fell silent.
Then Andrew said the words that changed the direction of everything.
"Mercer isn't running anymore."
"He's gathering every surviving member of The Circle."
"In forty-eight hours..."
"...he plans to disappear forever."
Andrew looked directly into Ethan's eyes.
"If you want to end this..."
"...meet me where it all began."
The screen went black.
A GPS coordinate appeared.
Daniel typed rapidly.
His face became unreadable.
Grace whispered,
"Where is it?"
Daniel looked slowly up.
"The coordinates lead to..."
He swallowed.
"...St. Catherine's Hospital."
The hospital where Emma and Lily had been born.

The place where Project Heir had begun eighteen years ago.
It was finally time to return to Room 317.
