Chapter 8 The Nurse Who Was Never Supposed to Survive

The lights flickered back on.
One by one, the security monitors rebooted.
The message was gone.
No trace.
No source.
Only the stunned silence inside the command room remained.
Daniel Brooks was already typing furiously.
"I've isolated the intrusion."
Ethan stepped beside him.
"Can you track it?"
Daniel shook his head.
"Whoever sent that message didn't hack into our system."
"What do you mean?"
"They used our own emergency broadcast protocol."
Mason frowned.
"So..."
"They had administrator access."
Daniel nodded.
"They knew every security password."
Every eye slowly turned toward Olivia.
She immediately understood.
"No."
"It wasn't me."
"I believe you."
Ethan answered quietly.
"But somebody inside Bennett Holdings must have shared those credentials years ago."
Olivia looked down.
"And they're still using them."
Helen stared at the blank monitor.
"There's only one person who would risk exposing Sarah Whitmore."
Grace looked at her.
"Who?"
Helen whispered,
"Someone inside The Circle."
One Hour Later
A black SUV sped through the rain toward downtown Boston.
Inside were Ethan, Grace, Emma, Mason, Daniel, and Helen.
Olivia insisted on coming.
Ethan refused.
"It's too dangerous."
She looked him in the eyes.
"My mother created this nightmare."
"If I know anything..."
"I have to help end it."
After a long silence...
He nodded.
"Stay close."
Emma sat quietly in the back seat, hugging a stuffed rabbit.
It was old.
Its white fur had faded to gray.
One ear had been stitched back on by hand.
Ethan noticed it.
"You've had that bunny for a long time."
Emma smiled.
"Since I was born."
Grace looked at the toy.
"I almost forgot..."
Helen suddenly leaned forward.
"May I see it?"
Emma handed it over without hesitation.
Helen examined it carefully.
Then her face changed.
"Grace..."
Grace frowned.
"What?"
"This isn't Emma's original rabbit."
"What do you mean?"
Helen turned the toy over.
Hidden beneath one paw...
Was a tiny embroidered letter.
L
Grace's heartbeat quickened.
"No..."
"The original rabbit had an E."
Helen nodded slowly.
"I remember sewing it myself."
Everyone fell silent.
If Emma's toy had been switched...
When had it happened?
And why?
Daniel interrupted.
"We're almost there."
The SUV pulled into a quiet neighborhood filled with aging brick houses.
Sarah Whitmore's last known address stood at the end of the street.
A small white cottage.
Overgrown roses climbed the fence.
The mailbox leaned sideways.
No lights.
No movement.
It looked abandoned.
Ethan stepped out first.
Rain soaked his suit within seconds.
Daniel signaled two security officers forward.
"We clear it together."
Ethan nodded.
The front door was unlocked.
It creaked open slowly.
Dust floated through the air.
The house smelled of old books and cedar wood.
Someone had lived here.
Recently.
A teacup still sat on the kitchen table.
Half full.
Still warm.
Daniel touched it.
"They just left."
The group spread through the house.
Grace wandered into a small bedroom.
The walls were covered with framed photographs.
Not family pictures.
Babies.
Dozens of newborn babies.
Hospital keepsakes.
Birth announcements.
Tiny footprints.
Every child Sarah had helped deliver.
Grace smiled faintly.
"She loved her work."
Then she noticed one frame turned face down.
She picked it up.
The glass had cracked years earlier.
Inside...
Her smile disappeared.
It was a photograph of Sarah holding newborn Emma.
Standing beside the bed.
Grace, exhausted but smiling.
And behind them...
A man.
Only part of his face was visible.
But Grace recognized the expensive gray suit.
Ethan walked into the room.
"What is it?"
She silently handed him the photograph.
His eyes narrowed.
"Who's that?"
Grace whispered,
"I don't know."
Helen slowly entered.
The instant she saw the picture...
She gasped.
"No..."
She reached for it with trembling hands.
"It can't be."
"You know him?"
Helen nodded.
"I've only seen him twice."
"Who is he?"
She pointed toward the partially visible face.
"His name..."
"...is Charles Holloway."
Mason frowned.
"I've never heard of him."
Helen answered quietly.
"That's because no one was supposed to."
"He was Margaret Bennett's personal attorney."
Olivia froze.
"My mother fired him."
Helen looked at her.
"No."
"He disappeared."
Daniel suddenly called from downstairs.
"Everyone!"
They rushed into the living room.
Daniel pointed toward the fireplace.
Fresh ashes.
Someone had burned documents.
Only a few scraps remained.
Mason carefully picked one up with tweezers.
Most of the writing was gone.
Except for one sentence.
Transfer Authorization
And beneath it...
One word.
Infant.
Grace felt sick.
"Transfer?"
Ethan looked at Helen.
"What kind of transfer?"
Helen didn't answer.
Because she already knew.
Emma wandered innocently through the room.
She stopped in front of an old grandfather clock.
She tilted her head.
Then looked at Grace.
"Mommy..."
"There's somebody behind the wall."
Everyone laughed nervously.
"It's just the clock, sweetheart."
Emma shook her head.
"No."
"Someone's breathing."
Silence.
Daniel slowly raised his pistol.
"Everyone stay back."
He carefully moved the grandfather clock aside.
Behind it...
A narrow wooden door.
Hidden inside the wall.
Daniel pulled it open.
Dark stairs descended underground.
A secret basement.
The air smelled damp.
Old.
Forgotten.
Daniel switched on his flashlight.
The group slowly descended.
The basement was surprisingly large.
Metal filing cabinets lined both walls.
Medical boxes.
Old hospital records.
Dust covered everything.
Except...
One cabinet.
It had been opened recently.
Ethan searched the room.
"Sarah!"
No answer.
Then...
A weak voice echoed from the darkness.
"Don't..."
Everyone froze.
Again.
"Don't turn on..."
"...the main light."
The voice belonged to an elderly woman.
Daniel aimed his flashlight toward the far corner.
There she was.
Bound to a chair.
Her mouth bruised.
One wrist bleeding.
But alive.
Sarah Whitmore.
Grace rushed forward.
"Oh my God."
Sarah looked up weakly.
"Grace..."
"You survived."
Grace fell to her knees.
"So did you."
Sarah smiled painfully.
"Not for much longer."
Daniel quickly cut the ropes.
"We're getting you out."
Sarah grabbed Ethan's sleeve with surprising strength.
"No."
"You need..."
"...to hear the truth first."
Ethan knelt beside her.
"I'm listening."
Sarah looked directly into his eyes.
"I delivered Emma."
"I held her before anyone else."
She began crying.
"And I helped commit the greatest mistake of my life."
Grace whispered,
"What mistake?"
Sarah closed her eyes.
"For twelve years..."
"I prayed God would forgive me."
Ethan's voice was steady.
"Forgive you for what?"
Sarah slowly reached into her pocket.
Hidden inside was a tiny hospital identification bracelet.
Yellowed with age.
She placed it into Ethan's hand.
The name printed on it wasn't Emma.
It wasn't Grace.
It wasn't Olivia.
It simply read:
BABY GIRL — ROOM 317
Ethan looked up, confused.
"This isn't Emma's bracelet."
Sarah nodded.
"No."
Her tears fell faster.
"Because..."
She struggled to breathe.
"...the baby you believed was born to Grace..."
"...wasn't the only baby delivered that morning."
The room became deathly silent.
Sarah whispered the words she had carried for twelve years.
May you like
"Two baby girls were born within six minutes of each other..."
"...and someone ordered us to switch them."
