Chapter 13 The Girl Who Never Knew Her Name

The explosion ripped through the warehouse like a thunderclap.

Glass shattered.

Steel beams groaned overhead.

A wall of fire raced through the ground floor, swallowing decades of hidden records in seconds.

"Move!" Daniel Brooks shouted.

His tactical team immediately formed a protective line around Ethan, Grace, Olivia, and Mason.

The stairway behind them collapsed.

Smoke poured into the office.

Someone hadn't simply wanted to destroy evidence.

They wanted to make sure no one left alive.

Daniel kicked open a side window.

"Out!"

One by one, everyone climbed onto the rusted fire escape.

Ethan was the last to leave.

Before stepping outside, he looked back at Michael Dawson's frozen image on the computer screen.

The hard drive...

The diary...

The Project Heir files...

All still inside.

He turned to Daniel.

"The server."

Daniel knew exactly what he meant.

Without hesitation, he pulled a portable SSD from his tactical vest.

"I copied everything while you watched the video."

Ethan exhaled.

For the first time that night...

They had won a race against The Circle.

Fifteen Minutes Later

Firefighters battled the blaze while federal investigators secured the area.

The warehouse burned like a funeral pyre.

Reporters gathered behind police barricades.

Television helicopters circled overhead.

By sunrise, the story would dominate every national news network.

But no one outside the investigation knew the truth.

This wasn't an industrial fire.

It was an execution.

Daniel stood beside a black SUV, reviewing the copied files.

"They triggered the explosion remotely."

Mason frowned.

"How long after we entered?"

Daniel checked the timestamps.

"Exactly four minutes."

Grace's face tightened.

"They knew we were inside."

Helen answered quietly,

"They always know."

Olivia looked toward the burning building.

"My mother burned evidence."

"The Chairman burns people."

No one argued.

Carter Estate

Just before dawn.

Emma was still asleep upstairs.

Helen sat beside her bed, gently stroking her hair.

For the first time in years...

The child slept peacefully.

She believed her father had finally come home.

Helen silently prayed she would never lose that feeling again.

Downstairs...

Daniel connected the copied drive to the estate's secure computer system.

Thousands of files appeared.

Financial records.

Medical reports.

Travel documents.

Photographs.

Surveillance logs.

Everything Margaret Bennett had spent decades hiding.

Mason smiled.

"We finally have their archive."

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

"We have part of it."

He opened another folder.

Half the files had been encrypted.

Military-grade encryption.

Ethan leaned over his shoulder.

"Can you break it?"

Daniel gave a faint smile.

"I know someone who can."

Six Hours Later

A woman in her early thirties walked into the Carter Estate carrying a laptop bag.

She wore jeans, a leather jacket, and wire-rimmed glasses.

Her dark hair was tied into a practical ponytail.

She looked more like a college professor than one of the country's best cybersecurity experts.

Daniel greeted her.

"Good to see you again."

She smiled.

"You only call when the world is ending."

He nodded.

"This time it might be."

Her name was Ava Reynolds.

Years earlier, she had worked for a federal cybercrime task force before resigning under mysterious circumstances.

Within minutes, she was studying the encrypted files.

"This isn't ordinary encryption."

She frowned.

"It's layered."

Daniel folded his arms.

"Can you open it?"

Ava looked at him.

"I can."

She paused.

"But whoever built this expected someone like me."

The room fell silent.

As Ava began working, Grace walked into the library.

She needed a moment alone.

Everything had changed too quickly.

Emma had a father.

The missing Bennett heir had a face.

And somewhere...

A young woman named Lily Dawson had spent eighteen years living a life built on lies.

Grace stared out the window.

"What must she have felt all those years?"

Olivia answered from the doorway.

"Lonely."

Grace turned.

Olivia stepped inside.

"I know what it's like..."

"...to grow up with a mother who only cared about power."

The two women stood in silence.

For months, Grace had blamed Olivia for nearly everything.

Now...

She saw another victim.

Not an accomplice.

A survivor.

"I'm sorry," Olivia whispered.

Grace frowned.

"For what?"

"For believing my mother."

"For hating you without ever knowing you."

Grace studied her for a long moment.

Then quietly nodded.

"We both lost twelve years."

Olivia's eyes filled with tears.

"I wish I could give them back."

Suddenly, Daniel called everyone into the study.

"Ava found something."

The encrypted files had finally opened.

On the screen appeared a map of the United States.

Dozens of red dots marked different cities.

Boston.

Chicago.

Seattle.

Dallas.

Atlanta.

Denver.

Miami.

Each location carried a code number.

Mason frowned.

"What are these?"

Ava zoomed in.

"Safe houses."

Helen looked horrified.

"The Circle had that many?"

Daniel answered quietly,

"More."

He clicked another file.

The title appeared:

ACTIVE OPERATIONS

Below it...

One line immediately caught Ethan's attention.

Operation Heir – Subject: Lily Dawson

Status:

Compromised

Current Location:

Unknown

Last Contact:

Silver Pines Public Library

Grace looked up.

"A library?"

Ava opened another attachment.

A security camera image filled the screen.

A young woman with dark blonde hair stood behind a checkout counter.

She smiled as she handed a book to a child.

Grace immediately recognized her.

"The photograph."

Olivia nodded.

"It's Lily."

Daniel checked the timestamp.

"Three weeks ago."

"What happened after that?"

Ava opened the next report.

The smile disappeared from her face.

"Oh..."

"What?"

Ethan asked.

She slowly turned the monitor.

The report contained only one sentence.

Target escaped surveillance after receiving anonymous warning.

Grace frowned.

"Someone warned her."

Helen smiled.

"Michael."

Ethan nodded.

"He knew they were closing in."

Daniel enlarged another image captured by a traffic camera.

Lily walked quickly through a crowded bus terminal carrying a backpack.

She looked frightened.

Over her shoulder...

A man followed.

Black jacket.

Black cap.

Part of a raven tattoo visible above his collar.

The Raven.

The next image showed Lily boarding a long-distance bus.

Destination:

Portland, Maine.

Then...

Nothing.

She disappeared.

Mason looked at Daniel.

"We can trace the bus."

Daniel shook his head.

"I already did."

"The bus arrived."

"But Lily never got off."

Silence.

Grace whispered,

"Then where did she go?"

Ava zoomed in on the final surveillance image.

Lily stood near the rear exit of the bus station.

A young homeless woman handed her a gray hoodie.

Thirty seconds later...

The camera lost sight of her.

When she reappeared...

She looked completely different.

Different clothes.

Different hairstyle.

Glasses.

She walked directly past The Raven.

He never even looked at her.

Grace smiled faintly.

"She fooled him."

Daniel nodded.

"She's smarter than they expected."

Olivia stared at Lily's photograph.

"My brother would be proud."

At that moment, Ethan's phone rang.

Unknown number.

Daniel immediately signaled everyone to remain silent.

Ethan answered.

"This is Ethan Carter."

For several seconds...

Only static.

Then a young woman's voice.

Calm.

Careful.

"You don't know me."

Ethan exchanged a glance with Grace.

"No."

"But I think I've been looking for you."

The room became deathly still.

The voice continued.

"Someone told me..."

"...that if I was ever in danger..."

"...I should find the man whose daughter draws blue houses."

Ethan's heart stopped.

He looked toward the staircase.

Emma's drawing.

The blue house.

Only Michael Dawson could have known.

"Lily?"

Silence.

Then...

A quiet answer.

"That's the name my father gave me."

She paused.

"But I don't think it's my real name."

Before Ethan could reply—

A gunshot echoed through the phone.

A woman screamed.

The call dissolved into static.

Then disconnected.

Grace's face turned white.

"No..."

Daniel was already tracing the signal.

"Come on..."

A red dot flashed onto the map.

Only for a second.

Then disappeared.

Daniel looked up.

"I got it."

"Where?"

He swallowed.

"South Station."

Ethan grabbed his jacket.

"Let's go."

But before anyone could move...

Ava's laptop emitted a loud warning tone.

A new file had appeared on the screen.

No sender.

No timestamp.

May you like

Only one sentence.

You're already too late.
