Chapter 15 The Chairman Strikes Back

The room fell into stunned silence.
No one moved.
No one breathed.
Daniel Brooks slowly lowered his phone.
Benjamin Hayes...
The last man Michael Dawson had trusted...
The last witness who could connect every missing piece...
Was dead.
Grace whispered the question no one wanted to ask.
"...When?"
Daniel swallowed.
"Our agents estimate less than an hour ago."
Ethan slammed his fist onto the table.
"Damn it!"
The sound echoed through the study.
"We keep arriving one step too late."
Helen closed her eyes.
"No."
"They're reacting."
Everyone looked at her.
She continued quietly,
"For twelve years, The Chairman never touched these witnesses."
"Now he's killing them."
Mason frowned.
"Why now?"
Helen looked directly at Ethan.
"Because he's afraid."
Hayes Point Lighthouse
Five Hours Later
The Atlantic Ocean crashed violently against the rocky cliffs.
Gray clouds stretched across the sky.
The lighthouse stood alone at the edge of the coastline, surrounded by police tape and federal vehicles.
Ethan stepped out of the helicopter with Grace beside him.
Daniel met them at the entrance.
"The crime scene is secured."
"Tell me."
Daniel's face remained grim.
"There was no struggle."
"He knew his killer."
Inside the lighthouse...
Everything was perfectly organized.
Benjamin Hayes had lived alone.
Books lined the shelves.
A kettle still sat on the stove.
A chessboard remained on a small wooden table.
Two cups of tea.
One untouched.
One half-empty.
Grace frowned.
"He was expecting someone."
Daniel nodded.
"He invited them inside."
The bedroom door stood open.
Benjamin Hayes lay peacefully on the floor.
There was no blood.
No gunshot wound.
No knife.
The medical examiner stood up as Ethan approached.
"Heart attack?"
Ethan asked.
The examiner shook his head.
"No."
He lifted the old man's sleeve.
A tiny red puncture mark rested just above his wrist.
"Injected."
"What was it?"
"We're waiting for toxicology."
Daniel answered before the doctor could.
"We already know."
Everyone looked at him.
"It's the same compound used in three unsolved witness deaths over the last twenty years."
Grace whispered,
"The Circle."
Daniel nodded.
"They call it Silent Sleep."
Olivia slowly walked through the room.
Her eyes stopped on a framed photograph.
Benjamin stood beside Michael Dawson.
Between them...
A little girl no older than six.
She wore yellow rain boots and smiled brightly at the camera.
Lily.
Olivia gently picked up the frame.
"My brother would have loved this."
She traced Lily's face with her thumb.
"For eighteen years..."
"...someone gave her a childhood."
The medical examiner approached Daniel.
"There's something else."
"What?"
"He died holding something."
The examiner carefully opened Benjamin's right hand.
Inside was a small brass key.
Engraved with a single number.
27
Daniel looked around the lighthouse.
"No locks."
"No cabinets."
"No safes."
"What does twenty-seven mean?"
No one knew.
Emma remained at the Carter Estate under heavy protection.
She sat in the kitchen coloring with Helen.
"Daddy's going to bring Lily home."
Helen smiled.
"I believe he will."
Emma nodded confidently.
"Then she'll finally have a family."
Helen's smile faded.
"You've never even met her."
Emma shrugged.
"You don't have to meet somebody..."
"...to know they're lonely."
Helen silently wiped away a tear.
Back at the lighthouse...
Daniel's team searched every room.
Nothing.
No hidden compartments.
No documents.
No computer.
No diary.
It was as though Benjamin had been preparing for this day.
Everything important had already disappeared.
Mason wandered toward the old bookshelf.
One title immediately caught his attention.
The Count of Monte Cristo.
He pulled the book free.
Something metallic fell onto the floor.
A small brass tag.
The same engraving.
27
Mason frowned.
He looked at the bookshelf again.
Every shelf...
Contained twenty-six books.
Except one.
Twenty-seven.
He counted carefully.
The twenty-seventh book wasn't there.
"Ethan."
Everyone turned.
"I think I know what the key means."
Daniel quickly searched the empty space.
Behind the missing book...
A tiny keyhole.
Benjamin had hidden something inside the wall.
Daniel inserted the brass key.
A soft click echoed through the room.
The bookshelf slowly swung open.
Behind it...
A narrow staircase descended underground.
The basement was nothing like Sarah Whitmore's.
It was clean.
Modern.
Powered by its own generator.
Computer monitors lined the walls.
Maps.
Files.
Photographs.
Benjamin Hayes hadn't been hiding.
He had been investigating.
Grace stared at the walls.
Hundreds of photographs covered them.
Every known member of The Circle.
Judges.
Executives.
Doctors.
Politicians.
Military officers.
Each connected by red strings.
At the center...
One photograph stood alone.
Daniel Mercer.
The Chairman.
His face circled in black ink.
Underneath, Benjamin had written:
He built the Circle.
Margaret only obeyed him.
Ethan walked deeper into the room.
A large corkboard displayed newspaper clippings dating back thirty years.
Disappearances.
Suspicious suicides.
Financial scandals.
Every case connected to one name.
Daniel Mercer.
Not publicly.
Secretly.
Benjamin had spent years uncovering the pattern.
Daniel Brooks opened a locked drawer.
Inside rested dozens of cassette tapes.
Each carefully labeled.
Interview 01
Interview 02
Interview 03
...
One tape stood apart from the others.
Its label simply read:
Confession
Daniel inserted it into an old tape recorder.
Static filled the room.
Then...
A woman's voice.
Margaret Bennett.
Older.
Tired.
Unlike the cold, calculating woman everyone remembered.
She sounded frightened.
"If you're hearing this..."
"...I'm already dead."
Olivia froze.
Her mother's voice echoed through the basement.
"Daniel Mercer was never my partner."
"He was my prosecutor."
Everyone looked up.
Grace frowned.
"Prosecutor?"
Margaret continued.
"Thirty-four years ago..."
"...he uncovered my father's criminal empire."
"Instead of destroying it..."
"...he took control of it."
Silence.
Daniel Mercer hadn't built a criminal organization.
He had inherited one.
And transformed it into something far more dangerous.
Margaret's voice trembled.
"I thought I could control him."
"I was wrong."
"By the time I realized what he truly wanted..."
"...it was too late."
Ethan leaned closer.
"What did he want?"
The tape hissed.
Then Margaret answered.
"Not money."
"Not power."
A long pause.
Then...
"He wanted to create dynasties he could own."
Grace's heartbeat quickened.
Project Heir.
Everything suddenly made sense.
Mercer wasn't stealing children for ransom.
He was controlling the future by controlling the heirs to powerful families.
Margaret continued.
"Andrew Bennett refused."
"Grace Mitchell unknowingly interfered."
"Emma Carter survived."
"Lily escaped."
"Everything Daniel Mercer built..."
"...began collapsing the day Michael Dawson stole that baby."
The tape suddenly stopped.
No goodbye.
No final message.
Just silence.
Daniel Brooks looked at Ethan.
"This confession changes everything."
Ethan nodded slowly.
"No."
"It changes nothing."
Daniel frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Ethan looked at the photographs of Emma and Lily pinned side by side on Benjamin's investigation board.
"Mercer already knows we've learned the truth."
Grace understood immediately.
"He's not hiding anymore."
Ethan's eyes hardened.
"Which means..."
"...he's about to come after the only two people who can destroy him."
Emma.
And Lily.
At that exact moment, Daniel's secure phone rang.
He answered instantly.
His face lost all color.
"Say that again."
The room fell silent.
He slowly lowered the phone.
"Ethan..."
"What happened?"
May you like
Daniel spoke only four words.
"Emma is gone."
