Chapter 2 The Bride Who Waited at the Altar

The first notes of the wedding march echoed through the grand ballroom.

Hundreds of guests rose to their feet.

Every camera turned toward the entrance.

Olivia Bennett appeared beneath a canopy of white roses, her cathedral veil trailing several feet behind her. She looked breathtaking in a hand-embroidered gown that had taken nearly eight months to create.

The audience smiled.

Some even wiped away tears.

To them, it was the beginning of a fairy tale.

They had no idea...

The groom wasn't standing at the altar.

"Ethan?"

The officiant glanced toward the side entrance.

No answer.

Whispers spread through the ballroom.

"Where is he?"

"Is this part of the ceremony?"

Olivia's smile remained perfectly composed.

Only the slight tightening of her fingers around the bouquet betrayed the panic rising inside her.

She looked toward Mason.

"Where's Ethan?"

Mason hesitated.

"I... I'll go get him."

Without another word, he hurried down the hallway.

Outside the ballroom, Ethan couldn't take his eyes off the old photograph inside the silver locket.

His hands trembled.

Twelve years earlier.

The picture had been taken during his final summer at Blackwood University.

He remembered that day with painful clarity.

He and Grace had spent the afternoon at a county fair just outside Boston.

She had laughed when he failed miserably at a ring toss game.

He had finally won a stuffed bear on his seventh attempt.

A street photographer had stopped them.

"Smile."

Click.

Grace had insisted on buying two copies.

One for her.

One for Ethan.

But Ethan's copy had disappeared years ago.

He had assumed it was lost forever.

So why...

Why was it inside a little girl's locket?

Grace quickly picked up the necklace from the floor.

"I'm sorry."

She clasped it shut before Ethan could look again.

"Grace..."

His voice was barely above a whisper.

"You disappeared."

Her eyes shimmered with tears.

"I know."

"You vanished without saying goodbye."

"I know."

"I searched for you."

"I know."

Every answer was the same.

No explanation.

Only regret.

Mason arrived breathless.

"Ethan!"

"The ceremony has started."

Then he noticed Grace.

His expression changed.

"Wait..."

"I know you."

Grace lowered her head.

Mason stared for several seconds before realization struck.

"Oh my God..."

"Grace Mitchell."

Ethan turned sharply.

"You remember her?"

Mason nodded slowly.

"You dated for almost three years."

"You were going to propose after graduation."

Ethan's jaw tightened.

"Until she disappeared."

Grace closed her eyes.

"I never wanted to leave."

Ethan laughed bitterly.

"You expect me to believe that?"

"You vanished."

"You changed your phone number."

"You emptied your apartment."

"You never answered a single email."

"I thought you were dead."

Grace couldn't look at him.

"I'm sorry."

"No."

His voice hardened.

"Sorry isn't enough."

Little Emma clung tightly to Grace's hand.

She looked from one adult to another without understanding.

"Mommy..."

"Are we in trouble?"

Grace knelt immediately.

"No, sweetheart."

"You've done nothing wrong."

Emma looked at Ethan.

"Is he angry?"

Grace swallowed hard.

"No."

"He's just... confused."

Mason checked his watch again.

"Ethan."

"You have less than two minutes."

"The entire ballroom is waiting."

The words barely registered.

Ethan's entire world had narrowed to one question.

"Grace..."

"Who's Emma's father?"

Grace's breathing stopped.

She looked down at the little girl.

Then back at Ethan.

"I can't tell you."

"Why not?"

"Because..."

Tears rolled silently down her cheeks.

"If I tell you today..."

"Someone's life will be destroyed."

Ethan frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Before Grace could answer, another voice interrupted.

"There you are."

Olivia.

She had left the ballroom.

Still wearing her wedding gown.

Still holding the bouquet.

Every guest had watched in stunned silence as she walked away from the altar.

Now she stood only a few feet away.

Her eyes landed on Grace.

Then Emma.

Then the locket in Grace's shaking hand.

For the briefest moment...

Something flickered across Olivia's face.

Recognition.

Gone almost instantly.

Replaced by a flawless smile.

"Ethan."

She spoke calmly.

"Everyone's waiting."

Ethan didn't move.

Instead, he asked quietly,

"Do you know this woman?"

Olivia looked directly at Grace.

Grace lowered her eyes.

The silence stretched.

Finally, Olivia answered.

"No."

"I've never seen her before."

Grace's fingers tightened around Emma's shoulder.

Too tightly.

Emma winced.

Olivia noticed.

But said nothing.

Ethan studied both women.

One was his bride.

Elegant.

Controlled.

Always composed.

The other looked as though she hadn't slept in years.

She was frightened.

Not of Ethan.

Of something else.

Or...

Someone else.

Olivia stepped closer.

"Ethan."

"This is our wedding day."

"If this woman needs help, security can assist her afterward."

Grace suddenly spoke.

"No."

Olivia froze.

Grace slowly lifted her head.

"I don't want security."

"I only wanted to leave before he saw us."

Olivia's smile faded slightly.

"I'm sorry?"

Grace looked directly into Olivia's eyes.

"But it was already too late."

For the first time...

The two women stared at each other as though they shared a history neither intended to reveal.

Ethan noticed.

"You two do know each other."

Both answered instantly.

"No."

The identical response only deepened his suspicion.

Emma tugged on Grace's sleeve.

"Mommy..."

Grace looked down.

"I thought you said she wouldn't be here."

Olivia's face went pale.

"What did you say?"

Emma innocently pointed toward Olivia.

"You said the pretty lady couldn't see us."

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Ethan slowly turned toward Olivia.

"You knew they were coming."

Olivia hesitated.

"I..."

"You lied."

"No, Ethan, listen—"

"You said you've never seen them before."

Olivia struggled to answer.

"It isn't what you think."

Grace gently pulled Emma behind her.

"Please."

"Don't involve her."

Ethan's mind raced.

Nothing made sense.

Grace.

Olivia.

Emma.

The hidden photographs.

The secret.

The fear.

It was all connected.

He simply couldn't see how.

Yet.

Just then, the wedding coordinator hurried down the hallway.

"Mr. Carter!"

"The guests are becoming restless."

"The press is asking questions."

"The livestream is still running."

Olivia took Ethan's hand.

"We'll figure this out later."

"Please."

"Let's finish the ceremony."

Ethan looked at her.

For years, he'd trusted this woman with everything.

His future.

His dreams.

His heart.

Now...

For the first time...

He wasn't sure he knew her at all.

His gaze shifted back to Emma.

She was quietly clutching the silver locket.

Watching him with those impossibly familiar blue eyes.

Then she asked the question that made Ethan's blood run cold.

"Mister..."

"Why do you have the same smile as me?"

No one spoke.

Emma continued innocently,

"My teacher says children usually smile like their daddy."

Grace's eyes filled with panic.

"Emma!"

The little girl immediately covered her mouth.

"I'm sorry..."

"I forgot..."

Grace had warned her never to say those words.

Too late.

Every face in the hallway had changed.

Ethan felt the floor disappear beneath him.

He looked at Grace.

Then at Emma.

Then back again.

The same eyes.

The same smile.

The same dimple on the left cheek.

Impossible.

No...

Not impossible.

Terrifyingly possible.

His voice shook.

"Grace..."

"How old is she?"

Grace couldn't answer.

Olivia suddenly stepped forward.

"That's enough."

Her voice was sharper than before.

"We're leaving."

She reached for Ethan's arm.

Before her fingers could touch him...

Grace whispered one sentence.

"She's five years old..."

Ethan frowned.

Five.

Exactly five years.

Five years ago...

He had been overseas negotiating the biggest deal of his career.

Or at least...

That's where he believed he had been.

Then Grace spoke again.

Barely above a whisper.

"But the truth..."

"...didn't begin five years ago."

May you like

"It began twelve years ago..."

"...the night someone decided our child should never know her father."
