Chapter 3 The Night She Disappeared

The hallway fell into a deathly silence.
No one moved.
No one breathed.
Grace's final words echoed through Ethan's mind like a hammer striking glass.
"...our child should never know her father."
Ethan stared at her, unable to process what he had just heard.
"Our... child?"
Grace slowly lowered her eyes.
Tears rolled silently down her cheeks.
She didn't deny it.
She didn't explain it.
She simply stood there, clutching Emma's tiny hand as though letting go would mean losing her forever.
Olivia was the first to speak.
"Grace."
Her voice was calm.
Too calm.
"I think you've said enough."
Grace looked at her.
"No."
Olivia took another step forward.
"This isn't the place."
"No."
"You've already ruined this wedding."
Grace's expression hardened for the first time.
"I didn't come here to ruin your wedding."
"I came because I had no choice."
Ethan turned toward Olivia.
"You know her."
Olivia didn't answer immediately.
Instead, she looked directly into Grace's eyes.
For several long seconds, the two women fought an invisible battle without saying a word.
Finally, Olivia sighed.
"We met once."
Grace laughed bitterly.
"Once?"
"That's what you're going with?"
Ethan's heart sank.
"You lied."
Olivia swallowed.
"I wasn't lying."
"I just..."
"...didn't think the past mattered anymore."
"The past?"
Ethan's voice rose.
"The woman standing in front of me just claimed I have a daughter."
"The two of you clearly know each other."
"And you're telling me the past doesn't matter?"
For the first time since Ethan had known her, Olivia had no perfect answer.
Emma tugged gently on Grace's sleeve.
"Mommy..."
"Can we go home now?"
Grace knelt beside her.
"Soon, sweetheart."
"I promise."
Emma nodded.
Then she looked at Ethan again.
There was something innocent about the way she studied his face.
Not fear anymore.
Curiosity.
As though she had spent years imagining someone...
...and had finally met him.
Ethan crouched to Emma's eye level.
"Emma."
Grace immediately stiffened.
"Ethan..."
He ignored her.
"Can I ask you something?"
Emma looked at her mother.
Grace hesitated.
Then nodded.
"One question."
Ethan smiled gently.
"Do you know who your daddy is?"
Emma smiled for the first time.
It was small.
Shy.
Beautiful.
"My mommy says..."
"...he's the bravest man in the world."
Grace closed her eyes.
Ethan felt his chest tighten.
"What else did she tell you?"
Emma thought carefully.
"She said..."
"...he loved us."
"...even if he didn't know we existed."
The words hit Ethan harder than any punch ever could.
Five minutes later...
The wedding had officially stopped.
Guests whispered throughout the ballroom.
Journalists gathered near the entrance.
Social media had already begun exploding with rumors.
Billionaire Groom Missing During Ceremony
Bride Left Waiting at Altar
No one knew the real story.
Not yet.
Inside the estate's private library, Ethan closed the heavy wooden doors.
Only five people remained inside.
Ethan.
Olivia.
Grace.
Emma.
Mason.
No lawyers.
No security.
No family.
Ethan wanted the truth.
And he wanted it now.
He stood beside the fireplace.
"Grace."
"Start from the beginning."
She nodded slowly.
"I owe you that."
She looked at Emma.
"Sweetheart."
"Can you draw for a little while?"
Emma happily took crayons from a nearby table.
Completely unaware that her entire life was about to change.
Grace took a deep breath.
"Twelve years ago..."
"You and I met during freshman orientation."
A faint smile crossed Ethan's face.
"I remember."
"You were carrying twenty books."
"You dropped every single one."
Grace laughed quietly.
"And you picked them all up."
"You remembered."
"I never forgot."
Neither of them noticed Olivia silently watching.
Her fingers tightened around the edge of a chair.
"We graduated together."
Grace continued.
"We rented that tiny apartment near the river."
"We planned our future."
"You wanted three children."
"You wanted a golden retriever."
"You wanted a little house with a blue front door."
Ethan smiled sadly.
"I remember every detail."
"So why did you disappear?"
Grace looked away.
"Because someone made me believe you had stopped loving me."
Silence.
Ethan frowned.
"What?"
"The week before your proposal..."
"I received an envelope."
"What envelope?"
Grace slowly reached into her purse.
Even after twelve years...
She still carried it.
The paper had yellowed with age.
The edges were worn.
She handed it to Ethan.
"I never threw it away."
His hands trembled as he opened it.
Inside were photographs.
His smile vanished.
There he was.
Young.
Laughing.
Kissing another woman.
Holding her hand.
Walking into a hotel together.
Every photograph looked real.
Every angle looked impossible to deny.
Grace spoke quietly.
"They arrived anonymously."
"There was no name."
"No return address."
"Only one note."
Ethan unfolded the faded piece of paper.
His heart pounded.
The handwriting was unfamiliar.
It read:
He never loved you.
You're only convenient until he marries someone worthy.
Leave before he humiliates you.
Ethan looked up immediately.
"These pictures are fake."
Grace nodded.
"I know that now."
"But twelve years ago..."
"I believed them."
Mason suddenly stepped forward.
"Wait."
He picked up one photograph.
"I've seen this before."
Everyone turned toward him.
"You have?"
Mason nodded.
"I couldn't remember until now."
"This picture..."
"...was printed in a campus gossip magazine."
Grace stared.
"What?"
Mason frowned.
"There was an article claiming Ethan had secretly started dating another woman."
"It lasted only one day."
"Then the magazine recalled every copy."
"Someone proved the story was fabricated."
Ethan looked stunned.
"I never even knew."
"You were in New York interviewing for Carter Technologies."
"You never saw it."
Grace slowly sat down.
"So..."
"It was planned."
Ethan looked through every photograph again.
Then suddenly stopped.
His eyes narrowed.
"No."
Grace looked up.
"What?"
He pointed toward the hotel in the background.
"This hotel didn't exist."
Everyone stared.
"What?"
Ethan walked to the bookshelf where several framed business awards stood.
One photograph showed the city's skyline.
He pointed toward an empty lot.
"Twelve years ago..."
"That hotel was still under construction."
He looked back at the fake photograph.
"So whoever created these..."
"...used a building that hadn't even opened yet."
Grace covered her mouth.
"Oh my God..."
Someone hadn't simply lied.
Someone had carefully manufactured evidence.
Someone had wanted Grace to leave.
Before Ethan could propose.
Before she could tell him...
She was pregnant.
Ethan slowly looked at Grace.
"You found out you were pregnant after you left."
Grace nodded.
"Two weeks later."
"Why didn't you come back?"
Fresh tears filled her eyes.
"I tried."
She reached into her purse again.
This time she removed another envelope.
Inside were dozens of returned letters.
Every single one had the same red stamp.
RETURN TO SENDER
Ethan frowned.
"I never moved."
"I know."
"I called your apartment."
"The number was disconnected."
"I emailed you."
"No replies."
"I mailed letters."
"They all came back."
"I thought..."
"...you wanted nothing to do with us."
Ethan's face turned pale.
"I never received a single one."
Someone had intercepted every attempt.
Every letter.
Every phone call.
Every chance they had to find each other.
Someone had erased twelve years.
Across the room...
Olivia quietly stood.
"I think..."
"...this has gone far enough."
Ethan looked at her.
"Sit down."
She hesitated.
"I have an important meeting with the guests."
"There are no guests anymore."
His voice was ice cold.
"Only questions."
Olivia slowly sat again.
For the first time...
Grace noticed something strange.
Olivia kept glancing toward the library door.
Not because she wanted to leave.
Because she was waiting for someone.
Or afraid someone might arrive.
Grace's stomach tightened.
She had seen that expression before.
Twelve years ago.
On the night she disappeared.
Emma suddenly looked up from her drawing.
"Mommy?"
Grace smiled.
"Yes?"
"I finished."
She ran over proudly with a piece of paper.
"I drew our family."
Grace smiled through tears.
Ethan looked down at the drawing.
Three stick figures stood beneath a bright yellow sun.
One was labeled Mommy.
One was labeled Emma.
The third...
A tall man holding both their hands...
Was labeled in careful, uneven letters:
Daddy Ethan
Ethan's breath caught.
"You... know my name?"
Emma nodded happily.
"I've always known."
"My mommy tells me about you every birthday."
Every birthday.
For five years.
Grace had never stopped talking about him.
She had never replaced him.
Never erased him.
She had only protected the secret.
But from whom?
And why?
As Ethan stared at the drawing...
A loud knock echoed through the library.
Three sharp knocks.
Everyone turned toward the door.
A member of the estate security team stepped inside.
His face had gone completely white.
"Mr. Carter..."
"I'm sorry to interrupt..."
"But there's an elderly woman here."
"She says she raised Miss Grace."
"And she keeps repeating one sentence."
Ethan frowned.
"What sentence?"
The guard swallowed hard.
May you like
"She says..."
'If Olivia Bennett is still in this house... no one is safe.'
