Chapter 7 Room 317

For several long seconds, no one spoke.

The only sound in the security room was the quiet hum of computer servers and the rain beginning to fall against the mansion's tall windows.

Olivia was the first to break the silence.

"...I didn't know."

Her voice cracked.

"I swear to God... I didn't know."

Grace stared at her.

"Your mother was in the hospital..."

"...the same day Emma was born?"

Olivia nodded slowly.

"Yes."

"But she wasn't there to have a baby."

Helen looked up sharply.

"You remember that?"

"I remember because it was strange."

Olivia closed her eyes, forcing herself to remember.

"My mother had already gone through menopause years before."

"So when she told everyone she was being admitted to the hospital..."

"I thought she was having surgery."

"What kind of surgery?"

"I was never told."

Ethan folded his arms.

"So Margaret Bennett spent an entire day inside the same maternity ward where Emma was born."

Olivia nodded.

"Yes."

"And nobody questioned it."

Helen whispered,

"Oh, they questioned it."

Grace frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Helen slowly sat down.

"Three nurses disappeared after that week."

The room fell silent.

"They disappeared?"

Mason asked.

Helen nodded.

"One resigned overnight."

"One transferred overseas."

"And one..."

She hesitated.

"...was found dead in what police called a car accident."

Ethan looked at Daniel.

"Find their names."

Daniel was already typing.

"I'm on it."

Emma looked around the room, confused.

"Mommy..."

"What's a maternity ward?"

Grace forced herself to smile.

"It's where babies are born."

Emma smiled proudly.

"So that's where I was born?"

Grace kissed her forehead.

"Yes."

Emma thought for a second.

"Were you happy?"

Grace's eyes filled with tears.

"I was happier than I'd ever been."

Emma hugged her tightly.

"Then that's all that matters."

Ethan watched the moment in silence.

The love between them was undeniable.

No matter what secrets surrounded Emma's birth...

Grace had loved her every second of her life.

Daniel suddenly looked up from his computer.

"I found something."

Everyone turned toward the monitor.

"The hospital still has archived employee records."

A list of names appeared.

Helen immediately pointed.

"There."

Sarah Whitmore.

"The head nurse."

Grace frowned.

"I remember her."

Helen nodded.

"She helped deliver Emma."

Daniel continued reading.

"Retired ten years ago."

"Current address..."

He stopped.

"What?"

Ethan asked.

Daniel swallowed.

"No address."

"Only..."

"...deceased."

Grace sighed.

"Another dead witness."

Daniel shook his head.

"That's the strange part."

"There isn't a death certificate."

"There isn't an obituary."

"There isn't even a burial record."

Mason frowned.

"So officially..."

Daniel looked up.

"She doesn't exist anymore."

Ethan's instincts immediately sharpened.

"Find her."

Daniel looked skeptical.

"If she's alive..."

"I'll find her."

Meanwhile...

Nearly thirty miles away...

A black sedan sat parked beneath an abandoned warehouse.

Rain pounded against the roof.

Inside the vehicle, a man watched the Carter Estate through a drone feed.

His neck bore the unmistakable raven tattoo.

The Raven.

He calmly switched off the monitor.

"They're asking the right questions."

A voice came through his earpiece.

"Do we intervene?"

The Raven looked at an old photograph lying on the passenger seat.

It showed a hospital corridor.

A nurse holding a newborn baby.

Behind her...

A woman stood partially hidden.

Margaret Bennett.

"No."

The Raven answered calmly.

"Not yet."

"They still don't know what happened in Room 317."

Back at the estate...

Daniel's phone rang.

He answered quickly.

"This is Brooks."

After a few seconds...

His face changed.

"What?"

Everyone looked at him.

He slowly lowered the phone.

"We've got another problem."

Ethan sighed.

"What now?"

"The penthouse."

Olivia immediately stood.

"My apartment?"

Daniel nodded.

"Our officers just arrived."

Olivia's voice shook.

"The safe?"

Daniel looked directly at her.

"It's gone."

Silence.

"And the apartment?"

Daniel answered quietly.

"Completely untouched."

No broken windows.

No damaged locks.

No signs of forced entry.

Only one thing missing.

The safe.

Mason frowned.

"That's impossible."

Daniel nodded.

"The thief had the security code."

Every eye turned toward Olivia.

She stared back in disbelief.

"You think I helped them?"

Ethan answered honestly.

"I don't know what to think."

Olivia slowly sank into a chair.

"I changed that code three months ago."

Daniel frowned.

"Who knew it?"

"No one."

She suddenly stopped speaking.

"What?"

Ethan asked.

Olivia whispered,

"...Except my assistant."

"Name?"

"Rachel Lawson."

Daniel typed quickly.

A moment later...

His expression darkened.

"She resigned yesterday."

Olivia looked shocked.

"Yesterday?"

Daniel nodded.

"And..."

He stopped.

"What?"

"She never existed."

The room went silent.

Daniel turned the screen around.

"The social security number she used belongs to a man who died eighteen years ago."

Helen closed her eyes.

"The Circle."

Grace slowly nodded.

"They planted her."

Ethan walked toward the rain-covered window.

Every answer they uncovered created ten more questions.

Who was Emma?

Why had Margaret Bennett been in Room 317?

Why had Grace been separated from him?

Why were people still willing to kill...

...to protect a secret twelve years old?

Behind him, Emma quietly colored another picture.

She walked over and handed it to Ethan.

"I made a new one."

He smiled.

"What is it?"

She pointed proudly.

"This is our house."

The drawing showed a small blue home.

A swing in the yard.

A dog.

Three smiling stick figures.

One labeled Mommy.

One labeled Emma.

One labeled Daddy.

Ethan noticed something new.

There was a fourth figure standing outside the fence.

Colored entirely black.

"No face."

Just dark.

He knelt beside her.

"Who's this?"

Emma's smile disappeared.

"The man who watches us."

The room instantly froze.

Grace's heart began racing.

"What man?"

Emma pointed at the drawing.

"He stands outside sometimes."

Grace looked horrified.

"When?"

Emma counted on her fingers.

"Lots of times."

"When we lived by the bakery."

"When we lived near the park."

"And..."

She hesitated.

"The apartment with the yellow door."

Grace's face went white.

Those were three different cities.

Three different homes.

Years apart.

She had never told Emma they were being followed.

Never.

"Emma..."

Grace whispered.

"Why didn't you tell Mommy?"

Emma looked confused.

"I did."

Grace frowned.

"When?"

"The nice police officer said not to."

Everyone stared at her.

Helen slowly stood.

"What police officer?"

Emma answered innocently.

"The one who gave me candy."

"He said..."

"'Don't tell your mommy about the man outside.'"

Daniel's expression turned to stone.

"What did he look like?"

Emma shrugged.

"He had shiny buttons."

"A blue hat."

"And a badge."

No one moved.

Daniel whispered,

"Oh my God..."

Ethan turned sharply.

"What?"

Daniel looked at everyone in the room.

"If a police officer really told Emma that..."

He paused, unable to hide the anger in his voice.

"...then The Circle didn't just infiltrate businesses."

He looked directly at Ethan.

"They infiltrated law enforcement."

Before anyone could respond...

Every monitor in the security room suddenly went black.

One by one.

Until only a single screen remained active.

White letters slowly appeared against the darkness.

STOP DIGGING.

The message vanished.

Then another line appeared.

ROOM 317 WAS ONLY THE BEGINNING.

A final line flashed across the screen.

One sentence.

One name.

One address.

SARAH WHITMORE IS STILL ALIVE.

FIND HER BEFORE WE DO.

The monitors shut off completely.

The room fell into darkness.

And somewhere, hidden in the shadows...

May you like

Someone had just offered Ethan Carter his first real chance to uncover the truth.

Or walked him straight into a trap.
