Chapter 1 The Girl in the Bathroom

The music floated through the grand ballroom like a promise.

Crystal chandeliers scattered warm light across hundreds of white roses. Guests laughed softly over champagne while a string quartet rehearsed the wedding march one final time. Every detail inside the Hawthorne Estate had been planned for over a year.

In less than twenty minutes, Ethan Carter would marry Olivia Bennett.

It was supposed to be the happiest day of his life.

Instead, it became the day everything he believed shattered.

"Ethan, the photographer needs ten more minutes."

His best man, Mason, adjusted his tie while checking his watch.

"You still have time before they call everyone inside."

Ethan smiled politely.

"I'll be right back."

He slipped away from the noisy ballroom into the quiet marble hallway leading toward the private guest suites.

For the first time all morning...

Silence.

He exhaled deeply.

The last six months had been exhausting.

Planning the wedding.

Managing Carter Technologies.

Preparing for an international merger.

Convincing the media that his marriage wasn't simply another billionaire business alliance.

He loved Olivia.

Or at least...

He believed he did.

She was elegant.

Intelligent.

Kind in front of people.

Everything seemed perfect.

Maybe too perfect.

Lately there had been moments that refused to leave his mind.

Late-night phone calls she immediately ended whenever he entered the room.

An old photograph she'd ripped in half before throwing it away.

Her nervous expression every time children approached her during charity events.

Whenever he asked about her childhood...

She always changed the subject.

He had convinced himself everyone deserved secrets.

Today those secrets would become irrelevant.

Or so he thought.

As Ethan walked toward the men's restroom, he noticed another door slightly open.

A family restroom.

Odd.

The venue had been closed to guests until the ceremony.

He was about to continue walking when he heard something.

A tiny sound.

Almost impossible to notice.

A child...

Crying.

Not ordinary crying.

The desperate attempt to stay quiet.

Like someone terrified of being discovered.

Ethan stopped immediately.

His instincts took over.

He gently pushed the door open.

"Hello?"

No answer.

Only silence.

Then...

Another muffled sob.

It came from inside the last bathroom stall.

He frowned.

"Is someone there?"

Still nothing.

Slowly, he walked closer.

He crouched beside the stall.

"It's okay."

"My name is Ethan."

"I'm not going to hurt you."

For several seconds...

Nothing happened.

Then he saw it.

Tiny white shoes beneath the stall door.

They were decorated with glittering silver stars.

A little girl's shoes.

His heartbeat quickened.

He gently unlocked the stall from the outside.

The lock hadn't been fully engaged.

The door slowly opened.

And there she was.

Curled into the corner.

Both knees pressed tightly against her chest.

A little girl no older than five.

She wore a beautiful white princess dress with delicate lace sleeves and tiny pearl buttons.

Her long brown curls were slightly messy.

A small silver tiara had slipped sideways in her hair.

Mascara tears stained her tiny cheeks.

She looked as though she should have been tossing flower petals down the aisle.

Instead...

She looked like she believed monsters were waiting outside.

"Oh..."

Ethan knelt immediately.

His voice softened.

"Sweetheart..."

"What happened?"

The little girl didn't answer.

She hugged herself tighter.

Her tiny shoulders shook uncontrollably.

Ethan carefully removed his suit jacket and draped it around her.

"It's okay."

"No one's going to hurt you."

Slowly...

She looked up.

Her enormous blue eyes met his.

For a second...

Something strange happened.

A feeling.

One Ethan couldn't explain.

It was almost...

Familiar.

As though he'd seen those eyes somewhere before.

"What's your name?"

The girl hesitated.

Then whispered...

"Emma."

"That's a beautiful name."

"My name's Ethan."

She nodded silently.

"Were you invited to the wedding?"

Emma slowly shook her head.

"No..."

"Then why are you here?"

She looked toward the bathroom door.

As if someone might suddenly appear.

Then she leaned closer.

Barely louder than a breath.

"Mom told me..."

"...to stay hidden."

"And never come outside."

Ethan frowned.

"Why?"

Emma immediately froze.

Her tiny fingers gripped his jacket so tightly her knuckles turned white.

She looked terrified.

As though even answering that question was dangerous.

After nearly thirty seconds...

She whispered.

"It's a secret."

"Mom said..."

"...I must never tell you."

Ethan blinked.

"Tell me?"

Emma nodded once.

Then quickly covered her mouth.

As though she'd already said too much.

Outside...

The wedding coordinator's voice echoed through the hallway.

"Five minutes!"

"The groom needs to return!"

Ethan barely heard her.

His attention remained fixed on the frightened child.

"Emma..."

"Who is your mother?"

Silence.

"Is she here today?"

Emma nodded.

"Is she a guest?"

Another nod.

"Does she work here?"

She shook her head.

Ethan smiled gently.

"Can you point her out for me?"

Emma looked like she might answer.

Instead...

Tears flooded her eyes again.

"Mom said..."

"If anyone finds me..."

"...everything will be ruined."

Ruined.

Such a strange word for a five-year-old.

Who teaches a child that?

Ethan reached into his pocket.

He handed her a folded handkerchief embroidered with his initials.

"It's okay."

"I promise you're safe."

Emma accepted it with trembling hands.

Then she suddenly looked at his face.

Really looked.

Her expression changed.

Confusion.

Recognition.

Then disbelief.

"You..."

Ethan smiled softly.

"What?"

Emma's lips trembled.

"You look..."

She stopped herself.

"My mommy cries when she sees your picture."

Ethan's smile disappeared.

"My picture?"

She nodded.

"In her room."

"There are lots of them."

The hallway seemed to spin.

His picture?

Why would a complete stranger keep photographs of him?

"Ethan!"

Mason appeared outside the restroom.

"There you are!"

"The ceremony starts in three minutes!"

Then Mason noticed the little girl.

"Oh."

"Whose child is this?"

Emma immediately hid behind Ethan.

Terrified.

Mason frowned.

"Did she get separated from her parents?"

"I don't know."

Ethan stood slowly.

"But something isn't right."

Before Mason could respond...

Footsteps echoed rapidly down the hallway.

High heels.

Running.

A woman rounded the corner.

She couldn't have been older than thirty.

Dark hair.

Elegant navy dress.

No makeup except mascara smeared by tears.

The instant she saw Emma...

Her entire body froze.

"Emma!"

She rushed forward.

The little girl immediately ran into her arms.

"I'm sorry, Mommy..."

"I didn't mean—"

The woman hugged her tightly.

"It's okay."

"It's okay."

Then...

She looked up.

Her eyes met Ethan's.

Time stopped.

Every color drained from her face.

She stared at him like she'd just seen a ghost.

"No..."

she whispered.

"No..."

"It can't be..."

Ethan frowned.

"Do we know each other?"

The woman looked seconds away from collapsing.

She held Emma even tighter.

Then she said five words that turned Ethan's world upside down.

"...You were never supposed to find her."

Silence swallowed the hallway.

Mason stared between them.

"What does that mean?"

The woman realized what she'd said.

She immediately shook her head.

"I have to go."

She grabbed Emma's hand.

But before she could leave...

Emma accidentally dropped something onto the marble floor.

A tiny silver locket.

It popped open as it landed.

Inside...

Was an old photograph.

Half of the picture showed a young woman.

The other half...

Showed Ethan.

Holding hands with her.

Smiling.

Twelve years earlier.

A photograph Ethan had believed was destroyed forever.

He slowly looked up.

The mysterious woman's eyes filled with tears.

His voice barely escaped his lips.

"...Who are you?"

The woman closed her eyes.

When she opened them again...

They were filled with twelve years of heartbreak.

"My name..."

she whispered,

"is Grace."

"And Emma..."

She couldn't finish.

Because, at that exact moment...

The wedding music began to play.

The doors to the ballroom opened.

And Olivia Bennett started walking down the aisle... while her groom stood frozen in the hallway, staring at the child who might destroy everything before he could say, "I do."
