Chapter 6 The Child They Were Hunting

The words hung in the air like a death sentence.
"...they've come for the child."
Emma looked from one frightened face to another.
She didn't understand why everyone had suddenly become so quiet.
She only knew one thing.
The grown-ups were scared.
And whenever grown-ups were scared...
Something bad always happened.
She slowly reached for Grace's hand.
"Mommy..."
"Did I do something wrong?"
Grace immediately knelt and wrapped both arms around her daughter.
"No, sweetheart."
"You did nothing wrong."
"You've never done anything wrong."
Emma nodded, though her little face remained uncertain.
Then she looked at Ethan.
"Will the bad man find me again?"
Ethan felt something inside him snap.
He didn't know whether Emma was truly his daughter.
He didn't have a DNA test.
He didn't have proof.
But in that moment...
None of it mattered.
He crouched in front of her and looked directly into her tear-filled blue eyes.
"No."
His voice was calm.
Firm.
"As long as I'm here..."
"No one is going to hurt you."
Emma stared at him for a few seconds.
Then, for the first time that day, she smiled without fear.
She believed him.
Across the room, Helen quietly wiped away a tear.
Mason noticed.
"What is it?"
Helen smiled sadly.
"I've waited twelve years to hear him say those words."
Twenty Minutes Later
The Carter Estate had become a fortress.
Every gate was sealed.
Armed security officers patrolled the grounds.
Police detectives photographed every hallway.
Forensic technicians dusted the broken security room for fingerprints.
The wedding guests had finally been escorted home.
The celebration was over.
Only the investigation remained.
Ethan stood in the estate's private security command center.
More than forty surveillance monitors covered one wall.
Most of them were now black.
The stolen server had taken almost every recording.
His head of security, Daniel Brooks, walked in carrying a tablet.
"We recovered partial footage from an independent camera."
Ethan turned.
"Show me."
Daniel tapped the screen.
The video was grainy, filmed from the parking garage.
A black sedan entered the estate exactly forty-three minutes before the ceremony.
No license plate.
Tinted windows.
Professional.
The vehicle stopped behind a delivery truck.
The driver stepped out.
Tall.
Athletic.
Black baseball cap.
Black gloves.
And the unmistakable raven tattoo on the left side of his neck.
The same man.
The Raven.
"Can you enhance his face?"
Daniel shook his head.
"He knew every camera angle."
"He never looked directly at one."
Mason frowned.
"This wasn't his first operation."
Daniel nodded.
"No."
"This was military-level planning."
Helen stepped closer to the screen.
"I know him."
Everyone looked at her.
Grace whispered,
"You've seen him before?"
Helen nodded slowly.
"Years ago."
"He couldn't have been older than twenty."
"He worked for Margaret Bennett."
Olivia looked shocked.
"My mother hired criminals?"
Helen laughed bitterly.
"No."
"She hired ghosts."
Nobody spoke.
Helen continued.
"They had no official records."
"No fingerprints."
"No tax information."
"They existed only inside Margaret's world."
"What did they do?"
Ethan asked.
Helen looked at him.
"They erased problems."
The room fell silent again.
Grace suddenly remembered something.
"Ethan..."
"There was another man."
"What?"
"The night I left."
"He was sitting inside the black sedan."
"I couldn't see his face."
"But..."
She hesitated.
"He called someone."
"What did he say?"
Grace closed her eyes, forcing herself to remember.
"He said..."
"'Package One is moving.'"
"'Prepare Package Two.'"
Daniel looked up immediately.
"Package?"
Helen's expression darkened.
"They weren't talking about documents."
"They were talking about people."
Emma quietly colored at a nearby table.
She hummed softly to herself.
Completely unaware that strangers had once referred to her mother as cargo.
Olivia slowly approached the window.
"I need to tell everyone something."
No one answered.
She took a deep breath.
"When my mother died..."
"I found several locked filing cabinets."
"I destroyed most of them."
Grace looked at her.
"You burned evidence."
"I thought I was burning evil."
Olivia whispered.
"I never opened everything."
Ethan folded his arms.
"What didn't you destroy?"
Olivia hesitated.
"A safe."
"Why?"
"I couldn't open it."
"Where is it now?"
"In my penthouse."
Everyone stared at her.
Mason spoke first.
"Has anyone else had access?"
Olivia's face slowly changed.
"Oh no..."
"What?"
Ethan asked.
"My apartment."
"What about it?"
"I left this morning."
"In a hurry."
"I never checked..."
"...whether the safe was still there."
Daniel immediately grabbed his radio.
"I'll send officers."
Olivia shook her head.
"They'll be too late."
"How do you know?"
She looked terrified.
"Because if someone wanted those files..."
"They've probably already broken in."
At that exact moment...
Her phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered cautiously.
"Hello?"
Silence.
Then...
A man's voice.
Calm.
Cold.
Almost emotionless.
"You should have burned everything."
Olivia froze.
"Who is this?"
"We gave your mother thirty years."
"You've had one week."
Her breathing stopped.
"You..."
The voice continued.
"Now you've chosen the wrong side."
The line went dead.
Everyone in the room had heard enough.
Daniel immediately traced the number.
Nothing.
Disposable phone.
Destroyed within seconds.
Professional.
Ethan looked at Olivia.
"Who are 'we'?"
She slowly shook her head.
"I don't know."
"Yes, you do."
"I swear..."
"I don't."
Helen interrupted.
"I do."
Every head turned toward her.
She looked older than ever.
Exhausted.
As though she had spent years carrying a secret too heavy to survive.
"There were never bodyguards."
"There were never assistants."
"There was never a private security company."
Ethan frowned.
"What are you saying?"
Helen whispered,
"There was an organization."
She walked toward the fireplace.
Staring into the flames.
"Margaret Bennett didn't build a business empire alone."
"She built a network."
"Judges."
"Police officers."
"Lawyers."
"Executives."
"Investigators."
"Even politicians."
Grace covered her mouth.
"That's impossible."
Helen looked at her.
"No."
"It was expensive."
Silence.
"They called themselves..."
Helen swallowed hard.
"The Circle."
Mason's face went pale.
"I've heard that name."
Ethan looked at him.
"Where?"
"In law school."
"It was treated like an urban legend."
"A secret network that solved problems for the wealthy."
"No witnesses."
"No paperwork."
"No scandals."
"If someone became inconvenient..."
"They simply disappeared."
Grace slowly hugged Emma tighter.
"So..."
"They've been hunting us all these years."
Helen nodded.
"Not because of you."
Grace frowned.
"Then why?"
Helen looked directly at Emma.
"Because of her."
Emma looked up from her drawing.
"Me?"
Helen forced a smile.
"Yes, sweetheart."
Emma tilted her head.
"Why?"
Helen couldn't answer.
Instead...
She looked at Ethan.
"There's something Grace never knew."
Grace stared.
"What?"
Helen took a long breath.
"The day you were born..."
She looked at Emma.
"...someone else was in that hospital."
Grace frowned.
"I remember."
"There was another woman giving birth."
Helen nodded.
"Yes."
"The woman in Room 317."
Ethan's heart skipped a beat.
"Three-one-seven..."
Mason looked up instantly.
"The Raven's tattoo."
317.
The exact same number.
No one spoke.
Helen's voice trembled.
"I always thought it was a coincidence."
"But now..."
She closed her eyes.
"I don't believe in coincidences anymore."
Grace whispered,
"Who was the woman in Room 317?"
Helen slowly turned toward Olivia.
Olivia's face had turned completely white.
Her lips trembled.
Then, barely able to breathe, she whispered,
"...My mother."
The room fell into stunned silence.
Grace stared at her in disbelief.
Ethan couldn't move.
If Margaret Bennett had been in Room 317 on the day Emma was born...
Then Emma's birth wasn't an accident.
May you like
It had been planned.
From the very beginning.
