Chapter 4 The Woman Who Came Back from the Dead

The library fell silent.
No one spoke.
No one even seemed to breathe.
The security guard stood frozen in the doorway, his face pale.
Ethan slowly repeated the words.
"If Olivia Bennett is still in this house... no one is safe."
He looked toward Olivia.
She had gone completely still.
Only the slight tremor in her hand betrayed the fear she was desperately trying to hide.
Grace noticed it too.
For the first time in twelve years...
Olivia Bennett looked frightened.
Not embarrassed.
Not angry.
Frightened.
"Who is she?"
Ethan asked the guard.
The guard cleared his throat.
"She refused to give her full name."
"She only said..."
"...Grace would recognize her."
Grace's face drained of color.
Her lips parted.
"It..."
"It can't be."
Ethan frowned.
"You know her?"
Grace slowly nodded.
"But..."
"My Aunt Helen died."
The room became even quieter.
"She died eleven years ago."
Mason looked confused.
"Then who is outside?"
Grace whispered,
"I don't know..."
"But if someone is pretending to be Aunt Helen..."
"They know things no one else should."
Ethan stood.
"Bring her in."
The guard nodded and disappeared.
A heavy silence settled over the room.
Emma climbed onto Grace's lap.
"Mommy..."
"Are you scared?"
Grace hugged her tightly.
"A little."
"But I'm with you."
Emma wrapped her tiny arms around her mother's neck.
"Then I'm not scared either."
Ethan watched them.
Every minute he spent near Emma made the impossible feel more possible.
The way she smiled.
The tiny dimple in her left cheek.
Even the way she tilted her head when she was curious...
She looked painfully familiar.
The library doors opened again.
An elderly woman slowly entered.
She leaned on a wooden cane.
Her gray hair was neatly tied back.
Deep wrinkles covered her face.
But despite her age...
Her blue eyes remained sharp.
The moment Grace saw her...
She gasped.
"No..."
The old woman smiled through tears.
"Hello, sweetheart."
Grace stood so quickly that the chair behind her crashed onto the floor.
"Aunt Helen?"
Emma looked confused.
"Grandma?"
The old woman opened her arms.
Grace burst into tears.
She ran across the room and embraced her.
The elderly woman held her as though she had been waiting over a decade for this moment.
"I thought..."
Grace sobbed.
"I buried you."
"I know."
"I visited your grave."
"I know."
"I cried every year."
"I know."
Grace pulled away.
"Then..."
"How are you alive?"
Helen sighed.
"Because the woman buried in that cemetery..."
"...was never me."
The room exploded with questions.
"What?"
"How?"
"Why?"
Helen raised one trembling hand.
"I'll explain."
"But first..."
She slowly turned toward Olivia.
The warmth vanished from her face.
Her eyes became cold.
"You've become exactly like your mother."
Olivia's expression hardened.
"You shouldn't be here."
"No."
Helen answered quietly.
"I should have come twelve years ago."
Ethan stepped forward.
"I need answers."
Helen nodded.
"You'll have them."
She looked around the room.
"Every single one."
She accepted a glass of water before beginning.
"Twelve years ago..."
"Grace was twenty-two."
"She had just graduated."
"She was happier than I'd ever seen her."
Helen smiled faintly.
"Every evening she talked about Ethan."
"She couldn't wait for him to propose."
Ethan lowered his eyes.
"I was going to."
"I already bought the ring."
Grace looked at him.
"You did?"
He reached into his wallet.
Hidden behind his driver's license...
He still carried an old photograph.
It showed a diamond engagement ring.
"I bought it three days before you disappeared."
Grace covered her mouth.
"Oh God..."
Helen continued.
"Then everything changed."
"Grace received those fake photographs."
"I begged her not to believe them."
"But she was heartbroken."
Grace nodded.
"I thought Ethan had chosen someone else."
"I didn't want to trap him with a pregnancy."
Ethan looked up sharply.
"So you already knew?"
Grace nodded through tears.
"I found out the same morning I left."
Helen continued.
"I decided to find Ethan myself."
"I drove to his apartment."
"But I never made it."
Ethan frowned.
"What happened?"
Helen slowly rolled up the sleeve of her blouse.
A long scar stretched across her forearm.
"I was hit by a truck."
Emma gasped.
"Oh no..."
Helen smiled gently.
"I survived."
"But someone wanted everyone to believe I hadn't."
Silence.
Ethan's heartbeat quickened.
"What do you mean?"
Helen reached into her handbag.
She removed an old newspaper.
The headline read:
LOCAL WOMAN KILLED IN HIGHWAY COLLISION
The accompanying photograph...
Was hers.
Except...
It wasn't.
Ethan looked closer.
The face was badly burned.
Impossible to identify.
Helen nodded.
"They told the police it was me."
"No one questioned it."
"My wallet had disappeared."
"My driver's license was inside the burned vehicle."
Grace whispered,
"I buried an empty coffin..."
Helen nodded.
"Yes."
Mason looked stunned.
"But who would do something like that?"
Helen slowly turned toward Olivia.
Olivia immediately stood.
"This is ridiculous."
Helen ignored her.
"There was only one family powerful enough."
"The Bennett family."
Ethan stared at Olivia.
"Your family?"
Olivia shook her head.
"No."
"My parents had nothing to do with this."
Helen laughed quietly.
"Still protecting them?"
"I said no."
Helen stepped closer.
"You know exactly what your mother did."
Olivia's breathing became uneven.
"My mother is dead."
Helen nodded.
"Convenient."
Grace suddenly remembered something.
"The night before I disappeared..."
"A woman came to my apartment."
Everyone looked at her.
"I never saw her face."
"It was raining."
"She wore black gloves."
"She told me..."
Grace's voice trembled.
"...that Ethan came from a family who would never accept someone like me."
"She said..."
"...if I truly loved him..."
"...I'd disappear."
Helen nodded.
"I followed her."
"You did?"
"Yes."
"I memorized the license plate."
Ethan leaned forward.
"You still remember it?"
Helen smiled.
"I never forgot."
She pulled another folded paper from her purse.
"I wrote it down."
Ethan immediately handed it to Mason.
"Run it."
Mason took out his phone.
As Carter Technologies' chief legal officer, he still had access to state records.
After a few moments...
His face turned white.
"No..."
Ethan frowned.
"What?"
Mason slowly looked up.
"The vehicle..."
"...was registered to Bennett Holdings."
Every eye turned toward Olivia.
Olivia looked genuinely shocked.
"That's impossible."
"My mother owned dozens of company cars."
"I didn't know who used them."
Helen stepped closer.
"But someone in your family did."
Ethan felt as though the walls were closing in.
He looked at Olivia.
"Tell me the truth."
"I am."
"No."
His voice cracked.
"For the first time since we've met..."
"I need the entire truth."
Olivia's eyes filled with tears.
"There are things..."
"...I only learned after my mother died."
Grace stared at her.
"What things?"
Olivia looked at Emma.
Then back at Ethan.
"My mother kept a private safe."
"I opened it after her funeral."
"There were hundreds of documents."
"I burned almost all of them."
Helen's face changed.
"What documents?"
Olivia hesitated.
Then whispered,
"Evidence."
Ethan's heart pounded.
"Evidence of what?"
Olivia closed her eyes.
"...of lives she destroyed."
Before anyone could speak again...
A loud crash echoed outside the library.
Glass shattered.
People screamed.
Security radios erupted with frantic voices.
"Intruder!"
"North entrance!"
"Somebody stop him!"
The library doors burst open.
A bloodied security officer stumbled inside.
"Mr. Carter..."
He struggled to breathe.
"Someone broke into the estate..."
"They stole the CCTV server..."
"And they left one message..."
Ethan rushed forward.
"What message?"
The guard looked directly at Grace.
Then at Emma.
Finally, he whispered,
"Tell Grace Mitchell... dead women should stay buried."
The officer collapsed.
May you like
And somewhere outside the mansion...
The person who had erased twelve years of Ethan's life had just declared war.
