Chapter 9 - The Witness in Maine

They found Samuel Whitmore in a remote house.
He was William's younger brother.
An accountant.
A man who had disappeared thirty-one years earlier.
Samuel opened the door.
The moment he saw Marissa, his face collapsed.
“Thomas's eyes.”
Marissa stared at him.
“You knew my father?”
“I loved him.”
Samuel showed them a photograph.
Thomas.
Elizabeth.
Samuel.
And baby Marissa.
Then he told them what happened in the hospital.
Edward entered Thomas's room.
Thomas was weak.
Edward leaned over him.
“You'll never let her inherit.”
Thomas answered:
“She is my daughter.”
Edward said:
“Then she won't live long enough to collect it.”
Samuel tried to intervene.
Edward's men restrained him.
Edward unplugged Thomas's machine.
Samuel cried as he remembered it.
“I heard him stop breathing.”
Then Samuel opened a hidden compartment.
Inside were original financial records.
Edward's stolen money.
His shell companies.
His bribes.
His instructions.
Everything.
But there was one more file.
Ethan Keane had created Whitmore Development Partners.
Not Edward.
Ethan had found the missing money.
And he had discovered that Elizabeth was alive.
Samuel handed Adrian a drive.
“This contains the proof.”
Then footsteps sounded upstairs.
Samuel's face changed.
“They found me.”
A voice came from the stairway.
“Adrian.”
Adrian turned.

His father stood above them.
Edward Whitmore.
