Chapter 18 - The Vault Beneath the House

Elizabeth finally confessed.
She had been spying on Edward for years.
Thomas had never intended to disappear without a plan.
The Continuity Project was real.
It was designed to preserve evidence and protect the children.
Elizabeth had been one of its secret agents.
She had helped move money.
She had arranged false identities.
She had watched Adrian.
She had protected Marissa.
But Thomas had survived.
That was the final secret.
The first recording played.
Thomas's voice filled the vault.
“Edward sold company information.”
Another recording.
“He bribed officials.”
Another.
“He funded criminals.”
Another.
“He intends to erase my children.”
Then the fifth recording began.
Thomas spoke slowly.
“If I disappear, understand this:
I am not dead.”
Everyone froze.
Richard looked at Elizabeth.
“You knew?”
Elizabeth nodded.
“He survived the crash.”
Adrian whispered:
“Where is he?”
Elizabeth didn't know.
Thomas had disappeared to protect them.
The recording continued.
“If you find me, do not trust the first story you hear.”
Then the tape ended.
Clara called.
“I have the final recording.”
They followed her to the old bridge.
Underneath it, they found a second car.
Inside was a cassette.
A photograph showed Thomas holding three babies.
Marissa.
Clara.
Adrian.
Nathan stood beside him.
On the back:
“THE FOURTH CHILD MUST LIVE.”
Then a man's voice came through the cassette.
“Edward will believe Thomas died.”
A pause.
“He must.”
Footsteps approached.
Edward appeared.
Daniel was tied up behind him.
Edward smiled.
“You're looking for the wrong person.”
Then another voice came from the darkness.
“Marissa.”
She turned.
The man stepped into the light.
Scarred face.
Gray hair.
Old eyes.
She knew that voice.
It was Thomas.
May you like
Her father.
Alive.
