Chapter 9 – The List That Could Destroy an Empire

The massive steel door groaned as it slowly opened.
Smoke drifted into the underground bunker.
Victor Blackwood stepped through first.
His black overcoat was covered with dust from the explosion, but his smile remained calm and confident.
Behind him, nearly twenty armed mercenaries flooded into the chamber, weapons raised.
The room fell silent.
Julian instinctively stepped in front of Emma and Alana.
Alexander Carter stood beside him, his pistol steady.
Victor looked around the bunker with quiet admiration.
"So..."
He smiled.
"Edward really did finish it."
His eyes swept across the servers, the files, the communication center.
"I've searched for this place for twelve years."
He slowly clapped his hands.
"Impressive."
Julian aimed Edward's old revolver directly at Victor.
"Take one more step."
"I'll shoot."
Victor laughed.
"You sound exactly like your father."
Julian didn't smile.
"My father wasn't afraid of you."
Victor nodded.
"No."
"That was his greatest weakness."
Emma stepped forward.
"What do you want?"
Victor looked at her almost affectionately.
"You."
Emma frowned.
"You've already said that."
Victor slowly shook his head.
"No."
"I want what only you can unlock."
He pointed toward the silver key hanging around her neck.
"The music box."
Emma instinctively touched the small silver key.
The forgotten melody echoed faintly in her memory.
A lullaby.
One her mother used to sing every night.
Why would Victor need a child's lullaby?
Alexander answered the question.
"Because the music box isn't opened with a key."
Everyone looked at him.
"It opens..."
He paused.
"...with Emma's voice."
Julian frowned.
"What?"
Alexander nodded.
"Emma's mother was a brilliant engineer."
"She designed the box to recognize a specific melody."
"If anyone else tried..."
"It remained locked forever."
Victor smiled.
"Exactly."
Emma stared at the silver key in disbelief.
"My mother..."
Alexander looked at her gently.
"She knew someone would come looking."
"So she made sure only her daughter could open it."
Victor spread his hands.
"You see?"
"I don't need to hurt anyone."
He smiled warmly.
"I simply need Emma to cooperate."
Julian answered without hesitation.
"She won't."
Victor sighed dramatically.
"Such loyalty."
His smile vanished.
"Kill him."
Without warning—
Gunfire exploded through the bunker.
Julian pulled Emma and Alana behind a concrete pillar.
Alexander fired twice.
Two mercenaries fell instantly.
Mr. Harris, despite his age, grabbed a shotgun hidden beneath the communications desk.
"I've been waiting years for this."
The elderly butler fired.
Another attacker dropped.
The bunker erupted into chaos.
Emma held Alana tightly.
The little girl buried her face against her mother's shoulder.
"Mommy..."
The word escaped naturally.
Without hesitation.
Without fear.
Emma froze.
Her eyes filled with tears.
Alana looked up.
"I remember your lullaby."
Emma could barely breathe.
"You do?"
Alana nodded.
"You sang it..."
"When I was little."
Julian watched them for one brief moment.
Even in the middle of gunfire...
His family had found each other again.
A bullet shattered the server rack beside them.
Sparks flew across the room.
Alexander shouted,
"Protect the archive!"
Julian frowned.
"What archive?"
Alexander pointed toward a reinforced steel vault at the back of the bunker.
"Edward hid the original evidence there."
"The List."
Victor's mercenaries immediately changed direction.
They weren't trying to kill anyone.
They were heading straight for the vault.
Victor calmly watched the battle unfold.
"Edward always loved dramatic endings."
Julian sprinted toward the vault.
Edward's journal had mentioned nothing about opening it.
Only a smooth steel panel and a single musical note were engraved on the door.
Emma reached his side.
She stared at the symbol.
Then...
Without thinking...
She began humming.
A soft lullaby.
The same melody her mother had sung years ago.
The bunker suddenly fell strangely quiet.
A hidden mechanism clicked.
The steel vault slowly unlocked.
Victor's eyes widened.
"It worked."
The heavy door opened.
Inside...
There was no gold.
No diamonds.
No stacks of cash.
Only a single leather folder.
Julian picked it up.
Across the cover were six handwritten words:
If I Fail, Trust No One.
He opened it.
His face lost all color.
Emma looked over his shoulder.
The first page wasn't a list of criminals.
It was a family tree.
The Hartwell family.
The Carter family.
And...
The Blackwood family.
Connected.
Emma whispered,
"No..."
Julian stared at the page.
Victor Blackwood wasn't just their enemy.
He was related to them.
Alexander slowly lowered his weapon.
His expression turned pale.
"So..."
"You finally know."
Julian looked at him.
"What is this?"
Alexander closed his eyes.
"The secret Edward swore to protect."
Victor smiled.
"The truth your fathers buried."
Emma looked from one man to the other.
"Tell me."
No one spoke.
Finally...
Victor answered.
"My mother..."
He pointed toward the Carter family name.
"...was your aunt."
Emma's breathing stopped.
Alexander looked away in shame.
Julian stared in disbelief.
Victor Blackwood wasn't chasing Emma because she was an obstacle.
He was chasing the inheritance he believed had been stolen from his branch of the family.
Everything...
The murders.
The betrayal.
The twenty-eight years of bloodshed.
Had begun as a family war.
Before anyone could process the revelation—
The bunker lights suddenly went dark.
A deep mechanical voice echoed through the chamber:
Archive Security Protocol Activated.
Facility Lockdown in Thirty Seconds.
Heavy steel blast doors began descending from the ceiling.
If they didn't escape immediately...
Everyone inside the bunker—
Family.
Friends.
May you like
Enemies alike—
Would be trapped underground forever.
