Chapter 3 – The Woman Who Should Have Been Dead

Julian didn't move.

His eyes remained fixed on the security monitor mounted beside Alana's bedroom door.

The image was grainy.

Black and white.

Yet something about the woman standing outside the estate gates made his heart pound against his ribs.

She wore a beige trench coat.

Dark sunglasses concealed most of her face.

A wide-brimmed hat hid her hair.

To anyone else, she was a stranger.

To Julian...

She felt painfully familiar.

"Mr. Hartwell?"

The guard's voice crackled through the intercom.

"Should I ask her to leave?"

Julian couldn't answer.

His mind had already drifted eight years into the past.

Emma standing in the kitchen, laughing as she burned pancakes.

Emma dancing barefoot in the living room while holding baby Alana.

Emma promising she would never leave them.

Then...

The phone call.

The abandoned car near the cliff.

The endless police search.

The funeral held without a body.

Eight years of unanswered questions.

Could the impossible really be standing outside his gate?

Downstairs...

Emma stood quietly in the cold evening breeze.

Her hands trembled so badly that she had to grip the iron gate to steady herself.

She had rehearsed this moment thousands of times.

She imagined Alana running into her arms.

She imagined Julian asking where she had been.

She imagined finally telling the truth.

But now...

Standing only a few feet away from the home she once shared with them...

She couldn't force herself to take another step.

What if Alana hated her?

What if Julian had moved on?

What if they believed she had abandoned them?

Those thoughts hurt more than eight years of loneliness.

Inside the mansion...

Julian grabbed his jacket.

"I'm going to the gate."

Mr. Harris followed.

"Sir..."

"What if it isn't her?"

Julian paused.

"Then I'll apologize for disturbing a stranger."

"And if it is?"

Julian closed his eyes.

"I don't know."

Outside...

Emma heard footsteps approaching from inside the property.

Her breathing became uneven.

The front door opened.

She recognized the silhouette immediately.

Even after eight years.

Julian.

He looked older.

More tired.

His shoulders carried the weight of years without answers.

But it was him.

The man she had never stopped loving.

Emma instinctively stepped backward.

She wasn't ready.

Not yet.

Julian walked slowly down the stone pathway.

Every step felt heavier than the last.

The estate lights illuminated the front entrance.

He could now see the woman clearly.

She kept her head lowered.

Almost hiding from him.

His heart whispered one name.

Emma.

His mind refused to believe it.

When he finally reached the gate...

Neither of them spoke.

The silence stretched endlessly.

Julian studied her trembling hands.

A faint scar crossed her left wrist.

His chest tightened.

Emma had received that scar during their honeymoon while rescuing a stray puppy tangled in barbed wire.

He remembered bandaging her wrist himself.

No one else could have that scar.

Unless...

His voice barely escaped.

"Emma?"

The woman froze.

Tears rolled silently beneath her sunglasses.

She wanted to answer.

She wanted to run into his arms.

Instead...

She whispered the one word she had dreamed of saying for eight years.

"Julian..."

The sound of her voice shattered every wall he had built around his heart.

Before he could move...

A black SUV suddenly screeched to a stop outside the estate.

Its doors flew open.

Three men in dark suits rushed toward Emma.

"Miss Carter!"

"You need to come with us!"

Emma's face instantly filled with fear.

"No!"

She backed away.

"I told you I wasn't going back!"

Julian immediately stepped between them.

"Who are you?"

One of the men pulled out identification.

"Private Security."

"We're here under orders from Mr. Alexander Carter."

Emma shook her head violently.

"I'm not leaving!"

Julian's eyes narrowed.

"She said no."

The tallest guard looked directly at Julian.

"This is a private family matter."

Julian's voice turned icy.

"She just became my business."

Emma grabbed Julian's sleeve.

For a split second...

He felt exactly what he had felt the day she gave birth to Alana.

The warmth of her hand.

The familiar trembling.

The quiet trust.

She looked up at him with tear-filled eyes.

"Please..."

"Don't let them take me."

Julian didn't hesitate.

He stepped forward.

"If anyone wants to take her..."

"They'll have to go through me."

The guards exchanged uncertain glances.

None of them had expected Julian Hartwell himself to intervene.

Just then...

A silver Rolls-Royce pulled up behind the SUV.

The rear door opened slowly.

An elderly gentleman in an impeccably tailored charcoal suit stepped out.

His silver hair was neatly combed, and despite the cane in his hand, he carried himself with unmistakable authority.

He looked at Emma with deep regret.

Then at Julian.

"You must be Julian Hartwell."

Julian didn't lower his guard.

"Who are you?"

The gentleman gave a polite nod.

"My name is Alexander Carter."

Emma's eyes immediately filled with tears.

"Dad..."

Julian stared in disbelief.

Dad?

Alexander Carter looked at Emma with heartbreak in his eyes.

"I've spent eight years trying to bring my daughter home."

Julian felt the world stop spinning.

His daughter?

Emma had once told him both of her parents were dead.

Alexander looked directly at Julian.

"There's much you don't know."

He paused.

"Starting with the fact..."

"...that Emma never abandoned you."

Julian's breathing stopped.

Alexander reached into his briefcase and slowly removed a thick sealed envelope.

Across the front, written in Emma's handwriting, were seven words that changed everything:

To Julian... if I never make it home.

Julian stared at the letter.

His hands began to shake.

Because he knew one thing with absolute certainty.

Emma had written it.

Eight years ago.

Long before the world declared her dead.

And whatever was inside that envelope...

Would explain why the woman he loved had disappeared without saying goodbye.
