Chapter 5 – The Enemy Who Never Stopped Hunting

The words hung in the cold night air.
"They know Emma is alive."
No one spoke.
Julian instinctively stepped in front of Emma.
Alexander Carter's face hardened into stone.
For the first time since arriving at the Hartwell estate, the billionaire looked genuinely afraid.
"Who followed you?"
The young woman struggled to breathe.
"My car..."
"They've been tracking it for almost twenty miles."
"They know I came here."
Alexander immediately turned to his security chief.
"Lock the estate."
"Now."
Within seconds, steel security gates slammed shut.
Floodlights illuminated every inch of the property.
Armed guards emerged from hidden security posts.
The Hartwell mansion transformed from a family home into a fortress.
Julian frowned.
"What exactly is happening?"
Alexander looked directly into his eyes.
"I owe you the truth."
He paused.
"Everything."
They gathered inside the library.
Heavy oak doors closed behind them.
Only Julian, Emma, Alexander, Mr. Harris, and the young woman remained.
Victoria sat silently in the corner.
No one invited her to speak.
No one even looked at her.
Alexander slowly removed an old photograph from his briefcase.
It showed three smiling people standing in front of a private jet.
A younger Alexander.
A beautiful woman.
And a little girl no older than five.
Emma.
Julian studied the picture.
"You told me you grew up in an orphanage."
Emma lowered her eyes.
"Because that's what I believed."
Alexander nodded sadly.
"She believed it because someone stole her childhood."
He took a slow breath.
"Twenty-eight years ago..."
"My wife and I survived an assassination attempt."
"Our driver didn't."
"Our bodyguards didn't."
"The people behind the attack wanted one thing."
"The Carter fortune."
Julian listened carefully.
Alexander continued.
"When our car plunged into the river..."
"I was pulled out by rescue divers."
"My wife..."
His voice broke.
"...was never found."
He looked at Emma.
"And my daughter disappeared."
Emma whispered,
"I was the little girl?"
Alexander nodded.
"Yes."
Julian looked confused.
"But how did she end up in an orphanage?"
Alexander opened another file.
"Because someone paid to erase her identity."
Inside were official government records.
Birth certificates.
Medical reports.
School enrollment forms.
Every document had been altered.
Emma Carter no longer existed.
She had become...
Emma Brooks.
A nameless orphan.
Emma stared at the papers.
Tears streamed silently down her face.
"My whole life..."
"...was a lie."
Alexander reached across the table and gently held her hand.
"But not anymore."
Mr. Harris suddenly looked toward Victoria.
"You knew?"
Victoria remained silent.
Alexander answered instead.
"No."
"She knew Emma came from money."
"But she never knew how much."
Victoria finally looked up.
"I only knew your family was dangerous."
Alexander's eyes turned icy.
"No."
"You confused powerful people..."
"...with dangerous ones."
Julian sat down heavily.
Everything he believed about his wife had just collapsed.
Emma hadn't hidden her past because she was ashamed.
She hadn't lied.
Someone had stolen the truth before she was old enough to remember it.
Emma quietly reached into her handbag.
"I've been carrying something."
She placed a small silver key on the table.
Alexander immediately recognized it.
His eyes widened.
"You still have it."
Emma nodded.
"I never knew why I couldn't throw it away."
Alexander smiled sadly.
"It opens your mother's safety deposit box."
Everyone fell silent.
"My mother?"
Alexander nodded.
"The last thing she hid before the attack."
Julian leaned forward.
"What's inside?"
Alexander slowly shook his head.
"I've never been able to open it."
"Only Emma can."
Just then...
The mansion lights flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Then...
Darkness.
The entire estate lost power.
Emergency backup lights illuminated the hallways in deep red.
Security alarms erupted throughout the mansion.
A guard's voice echoed through the intercom.
"Sir!"
"The west perimeter has been breached!"
Another voice shouted,
"Three vehicles!"
"No..."
"Four!"
Julian rushed toward the security monitors.
Masked men dressed in black tactical gear were climbing over the outer walls.
They moved with military precision.
One by one...
Security cameras went offline.
"They're cutting the feeds!"
Mr. Harris whispered.
Alexander remained calm.
"They're professionals."
Emma's breathing became uneven.
"I know who they are."
Everyone turned toward her.
She looked at the masked figures on the remaining monitor.
"I remember..."
Fragments of memory flooded back.
Rain.
Gunfire.
A burning vehicle.
A man wearing the exact same black insignia.
She grabbed her head in pain.
"They were there..."
"The night everything happened."
Alexander rushed to her side.
"What do you remember?"
Emma closed her eyes.
"I heard someone say..."
She struggled.
"'The child must never be found.'"
A painful silence followed.
Julian looked toward the screen again.
"They've been hunting you..."
"...since you were five years old."
Emma slowly nodded.
Suddenly—
BOOM!
A massive explosion rocked the mansion.
The front gates were blown apart.
Glass shattered across the entrance hall.
Smoke filled the air.
Outside...
The lead SUV rolled through the destroyed gates.
A tall man stepped out.
He wore a black overcoat.
Silver hair.
Black leather gloves.
His face remained calm despite the chaos surrounding him.
Alexander's expression instantly changed.
"No..."
Julian looked at him.
"You know him?"
Alexander whispered only two words.
"Victor Blackwood."
The name drained every drop of color from Emma's face.
She clutched Julian's hand so tightly her fingers turned white.
Julian frowned.
"Who is he?"
Alexander answered quietly.
"The man..."
"...who murdered your mother."
Outside, Victor Blackwood looked toward the mansion and smiled.
Then he raised a loudspeaker.
His cold voice echoed across the estate.
"Emma Carter..."
"You've been hiding long enough."
"Come outside..."
"...and no one else has to die."
Julian looked at Emma.
Then at the armed men surrounding his home.
He made one silent promise.
Eight years ago, he failed to protect the woman he loved.
This time...
May you like
He would fight for her.
No matter the cost.
