Chapter 10 – The Truth Edward Took to His Grave

The bunker shook violently.

Massive steel blast doors descended from the ceiling with a deafening metallic roar.

Twenty-nine seconds...

Red emergency lights flashed across the underground chamber.

A computerized voice echoed through the bunker.

Security Lockdown Activated.

Archive Protection Protocol Engaged.

Mercenaries abandoned the firefight.

Everyone sprinted toward the only exit.

Even Victor Blackwood's men looked uneasy.

They had expected resistance.

They had not expected to be buried alive.

Julian grabbed Alana with one arm and reached for Emma with the other.

"Run!"

Alexander Carter covered their retreat, firing controlled shots that forced Victor's men to keep their heads down.

Mr. Harris, despite being sixty-eight years old, refused to fall behind.

"This way!"

He pointed toward a narrow maintenance corridor Edward had built decades earlier.

Victor remained strangely calm.

He wasn't running.

Instead...

He walked toward the open vault.

His eyes settled on the leather folder still lying inside.

A slow smile spread across his face.

"So that's where you hid it."

He reached inside.

Julian saw him.

"No!"

Without thinking, Julian turned and sprinted back.

Emma shouted after him.

"Julian!"

But he didn't stop.

If Victor escaped with Edward's files...

Everything they had endured would have been meaningless.

The countdown continued.

Fifteen seconds...

Julian tackled Victor before he could reach the folder.

Both men crashed onto the concrete floor.

The leather file slid across the room.

Emma instinctively ran toward it.

Victor roared with fury.

"You have no idea what you're protecting!"

Julian drove his fist into Victor's jaw.

"I know enough."

The two men exchanged brutal blows.

Victor was older.

But years of combat training made him incredibly dangerous.

He slammed Julian into a steel support beam.

Julian felt something crack in his shoulder.

Pain shot through his body.

Still...

He refused to let go.

Emma reached the folder.

Just as her fingers touched it...

A single folded letter slipped out.

Unlike every other document...

It bore no official seal.

Only one handwritten name.

Emma.

Her breath caught.

Edward had written directly to her.

The blast doors were almost closed.

Alexander shouted,

"Emma!"

"We have to go!"

She quickly unfolded the letter.

Edward's familiar handwriting covered the page.

My dear Emma,

If you are reading this, then I am no longer alive.

There is one truth I could never tell while I lived—not because I doubted you, but because I feared what that truth would cost.

Emma's hands trembled.

She kept reading.

Victor Blackwood believes he is fighting for an inheritance stolen from his family.

He is wrong.

The Carter family never stole anything.

His own father did.

Emma looked up in disbelief.

Alexander's face turned pale.

"So..."

"He found the letter."

Julian turned toward him.

"You knew?"

Alexander nodded slowly.

"I suspected."

"But Edward promised to reveal it only when the time was right."

Emma continued reading.

Thirty years ago, Victor's father secretly sold confidential government defense technology to foreign buyers.

When your mother discovered the betrayal, she gathered evidence to expose him.

Before she could deliver it...

The attacks began.

Silence filled the bunker.

Victor stopped fighting.

His breathing grew heavy.

"No..."

Emma's voice cracked as she read the final lines.

Your mother never stole Victor's inheritance.

She protected innocent lives.

Everything Victor lost...

...was the consequence of his father's own crimes.

Victor slowly shook his head.

"You're lying."

Alexander looked directly at him.

"No."

"Edward spent years proving the truth."

Victor staggered backward.

"My father..."

"He told me the Carters destroyed our family."

Alexander answered quietly.

"Your father destroyed himself."

Victor laughed.

A broken...

Hopeless laugh.

"My entire life..."

"I've been chasing revenge..."

He looked at Emma.

"For a lie."

The bunker alarm blared again.

Five seconds...

Mr. Harris shouted,

"NOW!"

Alexander pushed Emma toward the corridor.

Julian grabbed the leather folder.

Together they dove through the maintenance tunnel.

The blast doors slammed shut behind them with a thunderous crash.

The underground archive disappeared behind six feet of reinforced steel.

Victor remained trapped on the other side.

Silence.

Only the sound of heavy breathing filled the narrow corridor.

Alana looked up at Emma.

"Mommy..."

"Is it over?"

Emma held her daughter tightly.

"I hope so."

Then...

A deep rumble echoed behind the sealed blast door.

Not an explosion.

A mechanism.

Alexander frowned.

"That's impossible."

Mr. Harris slowly smiled.

"No..."

"I remember now."

Julian looked at him.

"What?"

The old butler pointed at the floor beneath their feet.

"Edward never built one escape tunnel."

"He built two."

Before anyone could ask another question...

The concrete wall behind them slowly slid open.

A hidden elevator rose silently from beneath the earth.

Its doors opened.

Inside stood an elderly woman in a dark navy suit.

Her silver hair was neatly tied back.

She carried a polished wooden cane topped with the Hartwell family crest.

She looked directly at Julian.

Then smiled.

"I've been waiting twelve years to meet Edward's son."

Julian frowned.

"Who are you?"

The woman stepped out of the elevator.

"My name is Eleanor Ashcroft."

She reached into her handbag and handed Julian an old brass key.

Across its tag were five engraved words:

For the Last Guardian Only.

Julian looked at the mysterious key.

Then back at the woman.

"What does this open?"

Eleanor's smile faded.

"Not a vault."

"Not a fortune."

She looked at Emma.

"It opens the place where your parents hid the final truth..."

May you like

"...the truth that can either save your family..."

"...or destroy every name connected to it forever."
