Chapter 11 – The Keeper of Edward's Final Secret

No one spoke.
The hidden elevator remained open, its polished brass doors reflecting the flashing emergency lights.
The elderly woman stood perfectly still.
Elegant.
Composed.
As though she had been expecting this exact moment for years.
Julian tightened his grip on Edward's leather folder.
"Who are you?"
The woman smiled gently.
"My name is Eleanor Ashcroft."
"I was your father's attorney..."
She paused.
"...and his oldest friend."
Alexander Carter stared at her in disbelief.
"Eleanor?"
She nodded.
"It's been a long time, Alexander."
He slowly lowered his weapon.
"I thought you retired."
"I did."
"Until Edward left me one final responsibility."
Mr. Harris chuckled quietly.
"I wondered when you'd finally appear."
Julian frowned.
"You knew about her?"
The old butler nodded.
"Your father trusted only three people with his final plan."
"He trusted me."
"He trusted Alexander."
"And he trusted Eleanor."
Emma looked at the brass key resting in Julian's hand.
"What does it open?"
Eleanor's expression turned serious.
"Edward called it..."
'The Last Room.'
Julian frowned.
"I've never heard of it."
"You weren't supposed to."
"It doesn't appear on any blueprint."
"It doesn't exist in any property record."
Edward had hidden an entire room...
Even from his own family.
Behind them, a muffled explosion echoed from the sealed bunker.
Everyone instinctively turned.
Alexander frowned.
"Victor."
Eleanor shook her head.
"He isn't dead."
Julian looked surprised.
"How can you know?"
She smiled sadly.
"Because Edward planned for him to survive."
Silence filled the corridor.
"What?"
Julian stared.
"My father let him escape?"
Eleanor nodded slowly.
"Edward never wanted revenge."
"He wanted the truth."
Emma whispered,
"Even after everything Victor did?"
Eleanor looked at her kindly.
"Especially after everything he did."
The group entered the elevator.
The heavy doors closed behind them.
Instead of rising...
The elevator descended even deeper beneath the estate.
Level after level flashed across the display.
B1...
B2...
B3...
Then...
No numbers.
Only one word.
FOUNDATION
Julian looked toward Eleanor.
"How deep are we going?"
She answered softly.
"To where your father built the future."
After nearly a full minute...
The elevator stopped.
The doors opened.
Everyone stepped into a breathtaking underground chamber.
Unlike the bunker above...
This place looked untouched by time.
Warm wooden bookshelves stretched from floor to ceiling.
Paintings lined the walls.
Ancient maps.
Family photographs.
Handwritten journals.
At the center of the room stood a single mahogany table.
Upon it rested a small silver music box.
Emma stopped breathing.
"My music box..."
It was identical to the one from her childhood.
Except this one had never been damaged.
Beside it lay a handwritten note.
Edward's handwriting.
Julian unfolded it carefully.
If you have reached this room, then you have already discovered that revenge destroys everyone who carries it.
The final truth cannot be unlocked with force.
It requires forgiveness.
Alexander slowly closed his eyes.
"That sounds exactly like Edward."
Emma approached the music box.
Her silver key fit perfectly into the lock.
She hesitated.
"What if Victor was right?"
"What if opening this changes everything?"
Julian gently took her hand.
"Whatever happens..."
"We face it together."
Emma smiled through tears.
Together...
They turned the key.
A soft lullaby filled the room.
The same melody Emma had remembered.
The music box slowly opened.
Inside...
There were no jewels.
No cash.
No hidden key.
Only a single family photograph.
Emma picked it up.
The image stole the air from her lungs.
It showed her mother...
Standing beside Victor Blackwood's mother.
Both women were smiling.
Their arms wrapped around each other.
On the back of the photograph were six handwritten words.
Sisters before the world divided us.
Emma stared.
"My mother..."
Alexander whispered,
"And Victor's mother..."
"Were sisters."
Julian looked from one face to another.
"Then Victor wasn't lying."
Alexander nodded sadly.
"No."
"But he never knew the whole story."
Eleanor opened another leather journal.
"This is what Edward wanted you to understand."
She began reading aloud.
Margaret Carter and Elizabeth Blackwood loved each other more than anyone else in the world.
They promised their children would grow up together.
Then greed destroyed both families.
Emma quietly wiped away tears.
"My mother never hated them."
"No."
Eleanor answered.
"She spent her final years trying to save them."
Suddenly—
The music box emitted a loud metallic click.
Everyone turned.
A hidden compartment slowly rose from its base.
Inside lay a single flash drive.
And another sealed envelope.
This one was addressed to:
Victoria Hartwell.
Julian frowned.
"My mother?"
Eleanor nodded.
"Edward never gave it to her."
"Why not?"
"Because he hoped she'd tell the truth on her own."
Julian slowly opened the envelope.
Inside...
There was only one document.
A signed confession.
Dated twelve years earlier.
His eyes widened.
"This can't be..."
Emma stepped closer.
"What is it?"
Julian looked up, stunned.
"It says..."
He swallowed hard.
"It says my father discovered Victoria secretly met Victor Blackwood..."
"...three months before his plane crash."
Silence.
Complete silence.
Alexander slowly lowered his head.
"So Edward was right."
Julian's voice trembled.
"My mother..."
"...knew the man who murdered my father."
Before anyone could speak again—
Julian's phone vibrated.
He answered immediately.
It was the estate's security chief.
His voice shook with panic.
"Mr. Hartwell..."
"We have a problem."
Julian frowned.
"What happened?"
The guard took a deep breath.
"Victor Blackwood..."
"...escaped."
The room fell deathly silent.
Then came the words no one wanted to hear.
"And he wasn't alone."
May you like
"He took..."
"...Mrs. Victoria Hartwell with him."
