Chapter 13 – The Twenty-Four Hour Ultimatum

No one moved.
The laptop screen remained black.
Victor Blackwood's final words echoed through The Last Room.
"You have twenty-four hours."
Julian stared at the empty screen.
His knuckles turned white around the edge of the desk.
For years, he had dreamed of confronting the man who destroyed his family.
Now that moment had arrived.
But Victor wasn't asking for money.
He wasn't demanding power.
He wanted something far more dangerous.
The truth.
Alana quietly tugged on Emma's sleeve.
"Mommy..."
Emma knelt beside her.
"What is it, sweetheart?"
The little girl looked frightened.
"Is Grandma going to die?"
Emma hesitated.
She couldn't lie.
But she couldn't burden an eight-year-old with the truth.
She gently hugged Alana.
"We're going to do everything we can to bring her home."
Alana nodded.
Then whispered something no one expected.
"Grandma was mean to me..."
"...but she cried every night when she thought nobody was watching."
The room fell silent.
Julian slowly closed his eyes.
Even after everything...
His daughter still saw the humanity in others.
Alexander Carter shut Edward's laptop.
"We don't have twenty-four hours."
Julian looked up.
"What do you mean?"
Alexander pointed toward the flash drive.
"The moment Project Phoenix was accessed..."
"It almost certainly triggered a hidden alert."
Eleanor nodded gravely.
"If Edward anticipated it..."
"So did the people he was fighting."
"They know someone has opened the archive."
Mr. Harris walked toward an enormous world map hanging on the wall.
Pins connected cities across the globe.
New York.
London.
Geneva.
Singapore.
Dubai.
Tokyo.
Each linked by thin red lines.
"What exactly was Project Phoenix?"
Julian asked.
Alexander answered quietly.
"It wasn't one corporation."
"It wasn't one government."
"It was a network."
"A network powerful enough to influence elections..."
"Manipulate financial markets..."
"Control media narratives..."
"And erase anyone who became a threat."
Emma whispered,
"My mother uncovered all of it."
Alexander nodded.
"And Edward helped her collect the evidence."
Julian looked back at the laptop.
"The chairman's name..."
"We still don't know if we can trust what we saw."
Eleanor folded her arms.
"Edward never wrote unverified accusations."
"If that name was in his files..."
"He had proof."
Emma reopened the laptop.
The file was encrypted again.
This time...
A countdown appeared on the screen.
23:41:12
"What is that?"
Julian asked.
Alexander frowned.
"A dead man's protocol."
"If the timer reaches zero..."
"The files automatically upload."
"To every major investigative agency in the world."
Emma's eyes widened.
"So Victor isn't bluffing."
Alexander shook his head.
"No."
"If those files go public without context..."
"Governments could collapse overnight."
"Markets would panic."
"Innocent people would die alongside the guilty."
Julian understood.
Victor wasn't trying to protect Project Phoenix.
He was forcing Julian to choose.
Save Victoria...
Or unleash chaos.
Just then...
Eleanor removed another envelope from Edward's desk.
"This wasn't with the others."
It bore Julian's name.
He slowly opened it.
Inside was a single handwritten page.
Julian,
If you're reading this, then you've discovered what I spent my life protecting.
Remember one thing:
Never confuse justice with revenge.
The innocent must never pay for the guilty.
If you have to choose...
Save the living first.
The truth can wait one more day.
—Dad
Julian read the letter twice.
Then folded it carefully.
"My father already made the decision."
Emma placed her hand over his.
"We save your mother."
Julian looked into her eyes.
"After everything she's done?"
Emma nodded.
"If we become the kind of people Victor wants us to be..."
"He wins."
Alexander smiled faintly.
"Edward chose well when he trusted you."
A secure phone hidden beneath the desk suddenly rang.
Everyone froze.
Eleanor answered cautiously.
No one spoke on the other end.
Then...
A distorted electronic voice said only six words.
The Chairman requests your surrender.
The line disconnected.
Alexander's expression darkened.
"They know we're here."
Before anyone could react—
Every monitor in The Last Room turned on simultaneously.
A familiar face appeared on every screen.
Victor Blackwood.
He wasn't in the warehouse anymore.
He was standing inside a vast control room.
Behind him...
Hundreds of people worked at computer terminals.
The scale of the operation was staggering.
Victor smiled calmly.
"I've been unfair."
"I should give you one more clue."
He stepped aside.
A man walked into view.
Gray-haired.
Impeccably dressed.
His face instantly made Julian's blood run cold.
"Impossible..."
Julian whispered.
Emma stared in disbelief.
Alexander clenched his fists.
The man smiling beside Victor...
Was Senator Richard Hale—
A national hero.
A decorated former prosecutor.
The public face of anti-corruption reform.
The same man who had spoken at Edward Hartwell's funeral.
Victor looked back into the camera.
"Meet the man who taught me..."
"...that the cleanest hands..."
"...are often stained with the darkest blood."
The feed cut out.
Silence consumed the room.
Julian slowly looked at Alexander.
"If Hale is involved..."
Alexander finished the sentence.
"Then Project Phoenix reaches higher than we ever imagined."
At that exact moment, the underground chamber trembled.
Not from an explosion.
From something much larger.
Eleanor looked toward the ceiling.
Her face lost all color.
"That's not Victor."
Julian frowned.
"What is it?"
She whispered one terrifying answer.
"The military."
Then the emergency radio crackled to life.
Unidentified government tactical units have surrounded the Hartwell estate.
They are demanding everyone inside surrender immediately.
Julian realized the nightmare had entered a new phase.
May you like
They were no longer fugitives from Victor Blackwood.
They had become targets of the very institutions they thought would protect them.
