Chapter 14 – The Siege of the Hartwell Estate

The emergency radio crackled again.

"Attention. This is a federal tactical operation. Everyone inside the Hartwell estate is ordered to surrender immediately."

The message repeated.

Calm.

Professional.

Relentless.

Julian looked around The Last Room.

No one moved.

Alexander Carter quietly removed the radio's battery.

The voice disappeared.

The silence that followed felt even heavier.

"They found us."

Eleanor Ashcroft slowly shook her head.

"No."

"They found the estate."

"They don't know this room exists."

Julian frowned.

"How can you be sure?"

Eleanor walked toward one of Edward's old blueprints hanging on the wall.

She pointed to a section marked only by a handwritten note.

Foundation Zero.

"Edward designed this chamber outside every official construction record."

"Even the government believes the mansion ends three floors above us."

Alexander nodded.

"Which means someone else wants us to come out."

Emma folded Edward's letter and placed it carefully inside her pocket.

"Victor doesn't control the military."

"No."

Alexander answered.

"But Project Phoenix has people inside every institution."

"They don't need the military."

"They only need someone who can issue legal orders."

Julian immediately thought of one name.

"Richard Hale."

Alexander's expression darkened.

"The Chairman."

Mr. Harris turned on one of the surveillance monitors.

The cameras surrounding the estate were still functioning.

Armored vehicles blocked every road.

Dozens of tactical officers established a perimeter.

Snipers occupied nearby rooftops.

Helicopters circled above the mansion.

Julian frowned.

"That's far too much force."

Eleanor agreed.

"They're not here to arrest us."

"They're making sure no one leaves alive."

Emma looked toward Alexander.

"Can we trust any of them?"

Alexander answered honestly.

"I don't know anymore."

Suddenly...

One monitor switched automatically.

Instead of showing the estate...

It displayed the inside of an interrogation room.

Victoria Hartwell sat alone.

Her hands were no longer tied.

A single desk lamp illuminated her face.

She looked exhausted.

Broken.

A door opened.

Victor Blackwood entered carrying two cups of coffee.

He sat across from her.

Calmly pushed one cup toward her.

Victoria didn't touch it.

Victor smiled.

"You always preferred tea."

She glared at him.

"I'll never help you again."

Victor laughed softly.

"You already have."

Inside The Last Room, Julian clenched his fists.

He wanted to reach through the screen.

He wanted answers.

Instead...

He forced himself to watch.

Victor leaned back.

"You know..."

"I did love Edward."

Victoria looked at him with disgust.

"You murdered him."

Victor's smile faded.

"I warned him."

"He refused to listen."

"He believed exposing Phoenix would change the world."

Victoria whispered,

"He believed people deserved the truth."

Victor sighed.

"And look where that belief brought him."

Emma noticed something strange.

Victor wasn't threatening Victoria.

He wasn't interrogating her.

He seemed...

Disappointed.

As though he had lost an old ally.

Victoria suddenly looked directly into Victor's eyes.

"You've lied to me for thirty years."

Victor raised an eyebrow.

"Oh?"

"You told me Daniel's death was an accident."

The room inside the video fell silent.

Julian's breathing stopped.

His older brother.

Victor slowly placed his coffee cup on the table.

"I never said accident."

"I said unavoidable."

Victoria's eyes filled with tears.

"He was six years old."

"He was innocent."

Victor answered coldly.

"So was Emma."

Emma froze.

Victor continued.

"You accepted your son's death."

"Alexander refused to accept his daughter's."

"That's the difference between your families."

Julian felt physically sick.

His mother hadn't betrayed Edward for money.

She had betrayed him after losing a child...

And spending decades trapped in fear and guilt.

Nothing excused her choices.

But suddenly...

Julian understood them.

The video feed froze.

Then disappeared.

Replacing it was a simple message.

She finally knows the truth.

Do you?

Eleanor looked toward Edward's journal.

"We're still missing something."

Julian nodded.

"My father always left one final piece."

He quickly flipped through the remaining pages.

Most contained financial notes.

Meeting records.

Security codes.

Then...

Near the back...

A folded map slipped onto the desk.

It wasn't a map of the estate.

It was a map of Washington, D.C.

One location had been circled in red.

Beneath it Edward had written only four words.

The First Ledger.

Alexander's eyes widened.

"No..."

Emma looked at him.

"What is it?"

Alexander slowly sat down.

"I thought Edward destroyed it."

Julian frowned.

"The first ledger?"

Alexander nodded.

"The original accounting book."

"The document that records every illegal payment ever made by Project Phoenix."

Emma whispered,

"The proof."

Alexander nodded.

"The only proof no one could alter."

Mr. Harris suddenly laughed.

Everyone looked at him.

"You know what's funny?"

"No."

Julian answered.

"What?"

The old butler smiled.

"Edward never trusted computers."

Julian frowned.

"So?"

Mr. Harris tapped the paper map.

"If he marked a ledger..."

"It means the original still exists."

Before anyone could speak...

The hidden elevator chimed.

Once.

Twice.

Then its doors slowly opened.

No one had called it.

Julian immediately raised Edward's revolver.

Alexander aimed his pistol.

The elevator was empty.

At first.

Then...

A small boy stepped out.

No older than ten.

Wearing a school uniform.

His hands were raised.

"I'm not here to hurt anyone."

Everyone stared in disbelief.

The boy looked directly at Emma.

Then reached into his backpack.

He carefully removed another envelope.

Across the front, written in Edward Hartwell's unmistakable handwriting, were five words that made Julian's heart race.

Deliver Only If I Die.

The boy handed the envelope to Emma.

"My grandfather told me to wait twelve years."

"He said today would finally come."

Emma looked at him in shock.

"Who is your grandfather?"

The boy smiled sadly.

"The man who buried Edward's greatest secret..."

"...beneath the United States Capitol."
