Chapter 15 – The Ledger Beneath the Capitol

The underground chamber fell into absolute silence.
Every pair of eyes remained fixed on the young boy.
He couldn't have been older than ten.
His school uniform was dusty.
His shoes were soaked from the rain.
Yet he stood with remarkable confidence.
Emma carefully accepted the envelope.
Her fingers trembled.
Edward Hartwell's familiar handwriting covered the front.
Deliver Only If I Die.
The paper had aged naturally.
The wax seal bore Edward's family crest.
It had never been opened.
Julian whispered,
"My father wrote this..."
The boy nodded.
"My grandfather promised he'd protect it until the right day."
Alexander Carter knelt before the child.
"What's your name?"
"Ethan."
"What's your grandfather's name?"
The boy smiled faintly.
"Samuel Reed."
The name instantly changed Eleanor's expression.
"It can't be..."
Julian looked at her.
"You know him?"
She nodded slowly.
"Samuel was the chief architect who helped Edward build Foundation Zero."
Alexander added quietly,
"He disappeared eleven years ago."
Ethan lowered his head.
"Everyone thought he was dead."
"He wanted them to."
Emma carefully broke the wax seal.
Inside was another handwritten letter.
This one was addressed to all of them.
She began reading aloud.
If this letter has reached you, then Samuel kept his promise.
By now, Project Phoenix knows the archive has been opened.
They will search every vault, every server, every account I ever owned.
They will find nothing.
Because the only evidence that matters was never hidden in my empire.
Julian exchanged a glance with Alexander.
Edward had anticipated everything.
Emma continued.
The First Ledger is real.
It contains the original signatures, payment records, and names of every founding member of Project Phoenix.
No copy can replace it.
No digital file can match its legal value.
Whoever possesses the original ledger possesses the truth.
Eleanor closed her eyes.
"So he really preserved it..."
Julian unfolded the old map.
The red circle marked a maintenance tunnel beneath the United States Capitol.
Next to it, Edward had written one sentence.
The truth was safest beneath those who claimed to protect it.
Alexander exhaled slowly.
"Edward hid the evidence beneath the seat of power itself."
Emma looked at Ethan.
"Where's your grandfather now?"
The boy hesitated.
Then reached into his backpack again.
This time, he removed a small brass compass.
The back was engraved with six words.
Follow North When Trust Fails.
"He told me to give you this."
"If he couldn't come himself..."
"...it meant they'd found him."
Silence filled the room.
Julian already knew what that meant.
Samuel Reed had sacrificed himself to keep Edward's secret alive.
Mr. Harris gently placed a hand on Ethan's shoulder.
"You're very brave."
The boy shook his head.
"My grandfather said brave people are just scared people who keep walking."
Alexander smiled sadly.
"That sounds like Samuel."
Suddenly—
One of the surveillance monitors came back to life.
Static covered the screen.
Then...
Victoria appeared again.
But this time, she wasn't alone.
A man in a tailored navy suit entered the room.
Silver hair.
Confident smile.
Perfect posture.
Julian immediately recognized him.
"Richard Hale."
The Chairman of Project Phoenix.
Victor Blackwood stood as Hale entered.
To everyone's surprise...
Victor inclined his head respectfully.
Not as an equal.
As a subordinate.
Emma whispered,
"So Victor really isn't in charge..."
Alexander nodded grimly.
"He never was."
Richard Hale calmly took Victoria's chair.
He looked directly into the camera.
As if he knew they were watching.
"Good evening."
His voice was warm.
Almost grandfatherly.
"If you've reached Foundation Zero..."
"...then congratulations."
"You've survived longer than Edward expected."
Julian felt a chill run down his spine.
Hale knew about the hidden chamber.
He knew everything.
Hale folded his hands.
"Edward believed exposing us would save the world."
"He was wrong."
He smiled gently.
"People don't want truth."
"They want stability."
"They want someone else making impossible decisions."
Emma stared at the screen.
"So you murdered innocent people for stability?"
Hale chuckled softly.
"Innocence is a luxury history rarely rewards."
Julian's anger exploded.
"You killed my father!"
Hale looked almost sympathetic.
"No."
"I offered Edward a place beside us."
"He chose martyrdom."
"Victor merely carried out the consequences."
Victor never denied it.
Then Hale leaned closer to the camera.
"But I'm prepared to be generous."
Alexander laughed bitterly.
"You?"
Hale ignored him.
"Bring me the First Ledger."
"In exchange..."
He looked toward Victoria.
"...your mother lives."
He paused.
"And so does the little girl."
The room went ice cold.
Alana.
Emma instinctively pulled her daughter closer.
Hale had just revealed something terrifying.
He knew Alana was with them.
He knew exactly where they were.
Eleanor immediately shut down every monitor.
"They've hacked the security system."
Alexander looked toward the hidden elevator.
"No..."
"It's worse than that."
Julian frowned.
"What?"
Alexander's expression hardened.
"They have someone inside this room."
Everyone froze.
No one spoke.
Slowly...
Every eye turned toward the only newcomer they didn't truly know.
Ethan.
The little boy's face went pale.
"I swear..."
"I didn't tell anyone."
Before anyone could respond—
The brass compass in Ethan's hand suddenly began flashing with a tiny red light.
Beep.
Beep.
Beep.
Alexander's eyes widened.
"It's not a compass..."
"It's a tracking beacon."
At that exact moment, a deafening explosion rocked the foundation.
The reinforced concrete ceiling cracked.
Dust rained down.
Emergency alarms screamed through the hidden chamber.
A computerized voice echoed overhead:
Perimeter Breach Detected.
Foundation Zero Compromised.
Someone had found Edward's final sanctuary.

And this time...
They were coming straight for The Last Room.
