Chapter 12 – The Woman Who Knew Too Much

The silence inside The Last Room was suffocating.
Julian slowly lowered his phone.
No one spoke.
Only the faint melody from Emma's music box echoed through the underground chamber.
Alexander Carter was the first to break the silence.
"What exactly did the guard say?"
Julian's jaw tightened.
"He said Victor escaped..."
"...and he took my mother."
Emma frowned.
"Took her..."
"...or rescued her?"
The question hit Julian harder than he expected.
Because deep down...
He wasn't sure.
Eleanor Ashcroft quietly closed Edward's journal.
"Edward predicted this."
She walked toward an antique cabinet and unlocked the bottom drawer.
Inside lay another sealed file.
Across the front were six handwritten words.
Open only if Victoria disappears.
Julian stared in disbelief.
"My father knew?"
Eleanor nodded.
"He prepared for every possibility."
Julian broke the seal.
Inside were surveillance photographs.
Old.
Yellowed with age.
The first image showed Victoria Hartwell entering a private restaurant.
Across from her sat...
Victor Blackwood.
The date froze Julian's blood.
Three months before Edward's death.
Another photograph.
Victoria handing Victor a thick envelope.
Another.
The two leaving separately through different exits.
Julian's hands began to shake.
"This isn't enough."
His voice cracked.
"It doesn't prove she helped him."
Eleanor looked at him with compassion.
"No."
"But the next page does."
Julian turned the page.
A signed bank authorization.
Victoria Hartwell.
Followed by six wire transfers totaling $18.7 million.
Each payment had been routed through shell corporations before reaching companies secretly controlled by Victor Blackwood.
Emma slowly covered her mouth.
"My God..."
Alexander closed his eyes.
"So Edward really knew."
Julian refused to believe it.
"There has to be an explanation."
Mr. Harris sighed heavily.
"There is."
Everyone turned toward the old butler.
"I've carried this secret for twelve years."
Julian looked stunned.
"You knew too?"
Mr. Harris nodded.
"I promised your father I would never speak..."
"...unless you found this room."
The old butler slowly sat down.
For the first time in decades...
He looked every one of his seventy years.
"Twelve years ago..."
"The night before Edward's final flight..."
"I overheard your parents arguing."
Julian's heart pounded.
"What were they arguing about?"
Mr. Harris answered quietly.
"Victor."
The memory returned with perfect clarity.
Edward had shouted louder than ever before.
'If you keep protecting him, he'll destroy every family connected to us!'
Victoria had screamed back.
'You don't understand what he'll do if I stop!'
Edward replied...
'Then we'll expose him together.'
Victoria had cried.
'It's too late.'
Julian felt the room spinning.
"My mother was afraid."
Alexander nodded.
"That doesn't make her innocent."
"No."
Mr. Harris agreed.
"But it explains why she kept making terrible choices."
Emma looked toward the family photograph still resting beside the music box.
"Victor never needed money."
"He needed silence."
Alexander looked at her proudly.
"Exactly."
"He bought people."
"He threatened others."
"And those who refused..."
He paused.
"...usually didn't survive."
Julian clenched his fists.
"So he blackmailed my mother."
Eleanor slowly shook her head.
"I don't think that's where it started."
She reached into another folder.
"This is."
She handed Julian a faded medical report.
The patient's name stunned him.
Daniel Hartwell.
"My older brother..."
Julian whispered.
Daniel had died before Julian was born.
His parents had always told him it was a tragic accident.
Eleanor looked at Julian with sadness.
"Read the cause of death."
Julian's eyes scanned the page.
Then suddenly froze.
Acute poisoning.
His breathing stopped.
"What..."
Alexander stepped closer.
"It wasn't an accident."
Eleanor continued.
"Victor's organization poisoned Daniel after Edward refused to sell Hartwell Technologies."
Julian looked ready to collapse.
"My parents always said..."
"They lied."
Mr. Harris finished quietly.
"To protect you."
Emma suddenly understood.
Victoria hadn't started helping Victor because she wanted wealth.
She had lost one child.
Victor convinced her she would lose another.
Fear had become chains.
Chains that lasted decades.
Julian sat down heavily.
"My entire childhood..."
"...was built on lies."
Emma gently took his hand.
"We'll find the truth."
"All of it."
At that moment—
The flash drive from the music box suddenly illuminated.
A tiny red light blinked.
Eleanor frowned.
"That's strange."
She inserted it into Edward's old laptop.
The screen came alive.
A password prompt appeared.
Emma instinctively typed the lullaby's musical notation she remembered from childhood.
The screen unlocked immediately.
Hundreds of encrypted files appeared.
Videos.
Financial ledgers.
Government records.
Corporate communications.
And one folder simply titled:
Project Phoenix.
Alexander's expression changed instantly.
"No..."
Emma looked at him.
"What is Project Phoenix?"
Alexander whispered,
"The operation your mother died trying to stop."
Julian opened the folder.
Inside were dozens of names.
Cabinet ministers.
Federal judges.
Military contractors.
International bankers.
Every one connected through secret payments.
Then...
The final document opened automatically.
Across the top appeared a single sentence:
Current Chairman of Project Phoenix
Julian read the name.
His face went completely white.
"It can't be..."
Emma grabbed the laptop.
She read it.
Then stared in disbelief.
The chairman wasn't Victor Blackwood.
He wasn't even on the list.
Victor...
Had never been the true leader.
He had only been the public face.
The real mastermind was someone no one had ever suspected.
Someone still respected by governments...
Celebrated by the media...
And welcomed into the highest circles of power.
Before anyone could speak—
The laptop screen suddenly flickered.
A live video feed appeared.
Victoria Hartwell sat tied to a chair inside an abandoned warehouse.
Bruised.
Terrified.
Victor Blackwood stepped into the frame.
He looked directly into the camera.
Then smiled.
"Julian..."
"You've finally found the truth."
He placed a pistol against Victoria's head.
"But now..."
"You have exactly twenty-four hours..."
"...to decide whether your mother lives..."
"...or whether the world learns what's hidden in Project Phoenix."
The screen went black.
And for the first time...
May you like
Julian realized this was no longer a battle over the past.
It was a race to stop a conspiracy that was still alive.
