Chapter 2 – The Woman at the Gate

The black sedan remained parked beneath the towering oak trees outside the Hartwell estate.

Its engine had long gone silent.

Yet the woman inside couldn't bring herself to open the door.

Eight years.

Eight birthdays.

Eight Christmas mornings.

Eight years of wondering whether her little girl still remembered her.

Emma Hartwell tightened her trembling grip on the faded photograph resting in her lap.

It showed a younger Julian standing beside her in the hospital, smiling as they held their newborn daughter.

Alana's tiny hand had wrapped around Julian's finger.

It had been the happiest day of Emma's life.

And the last truly happy memory she had.

A tear slipped down her cheek.

"Please..."

She whispered.

"Let her still remember me."

Inside the mansion...

Victoria stood frozen in the foyer.

The sting on her cheek had begun to fade.

The humiliation had not.

She looked around the room.

Every servant had witnessed it.

Every employee had seen Julian choose his daughter over his own mother.

Her voice shook with barely controlled rage.

"You'll regret this."

Julian didn't answer.

He knelt beside Alana, brushing a loose strand of hair from her face.

"Are you hurt anywhere else?"

The little girl hesitated.

Then slowly rolled up the sleeve of her sweater.

Dark purple bruises covered her tiny forearm.

Julian felt as though the floor had disappeared beneath him.

His voice dropped to a whisper.

"Who did this?"

Alana lowered her head.

"I... I fell."

Victoria answered immediately.

"Exactly."

Julian looked into his daughter's eyes.

"Sweetheart."

"You never have to lie to protect anyone."

Alana's lips quivered.

"Grandma squeezed me..."

"...because I wouldn't stop crying."

The room became deathly quiet.

Julian slowly stood.

His expression was no longer angry.

It was something far more frightening.

Disappointment.

He looked at Victoria as if he no longer recognized the woman who had raised him.

"You hurt an eight-year-old child."

Victoria crossed her arms.

"She needed discipline."

"No."

Julian replied calmly.

"You needed control."

The butler, Mr. Harris, quietly stepped forward.

He had served the Hartwell family for thirty-four years.

"Mr. Hartwell..."

Julian turned.

"I believe..."

The elderly man swallowed hard.

"...there's something you should know."

Victoria's eyes widened.

"Harris."

"Be quiet."

The old butler looked at her.

Then, for the first time in decades...

He ignored her.

"Miss Alana has been eating most of her meals in the kitchen."

Julian frowned.

"What?"

Mr. Harris lowered his eyes.

"She was told she wasn't welcome in the formal dining room."

Julian looked at Victoria.

She offered no explanation.

The butler continued.

"She often waits until everyone goes to sleep before taking food."

Julian's heart shattered.

"How long?"

Mr. Harris answered quietly.

"Almost a year."

Alana burst into tears.

"I didn't want you to be upset..."

"You work so much..."

"I thought..."

"...if I stayed quiet..."

"...Grandma would love me again."

Julian could barely breathe.

He pulled his daughter into his arms.

"You never have to earn love."

He held her tightly.

"Not mine."

Victoria laughed bitterly.

"So now I'm the villain?"

Julian looked up.

"You made yourself one."

"You always spoil her."

"I protect her."

"She's weak!"

"She's eight."

Victoria grabbed her handbag.

"This conversation is over."

She walked toward the front door.

Before leaving, she turned around.

"You'll understand one day."

Julian's voice remained calm.

"No."

"I finally understand today."

Victoria slammed the door behind her.

The sound echoed throughout the mansion.

Outside...

Emma instinctively stepped behind a stone pillar.

She watched Victoria storm toward a waiting car.

Their eyes almost met.

Almost.

Victoria climbed into her vehicle and sped away without noticing the woman standing only a few yards away.

Emma released a shaky breath.

She hadn't expected to see Victoria first.

The woman who had once smiled at her wedding...

Then slowly turned her life into a nightmare.

Inside...

Julian carried Alana upstairs.

Her small arms remained wrapped tightly around his neck.

"Daddy?"

"Yes?"

"Are you angry with me?"

Julian stopped walking.

His heart broke all over again.

He kissed her forehead.

"I could never be angry with you."

She looked at him carefully.

"Promise?"

"I promise."

He tucked her into bed.

Within minutes...

Exhaustion overcame fear.

Alana fell asleep clutching the stuffed rabbit Emma had given her before disappearing.

Julian gently picked up the worn toy.

Around its neck was a tiny silver locket.

He had seen it thousands of times.

But tonight...

Something caught his attention.

The stitching along the rabbit's back looked uneven.

Almost as if someone had repaired it.

Curious, Julian carefully opened the seam.

A tiny folded piece of paper slipped into his hand.

His pulse quickened.

Someone had hidden it inside the toy.

He unfolded the fragile note.

Only one sentence was written.

In Emma's unmistakable handwriting.

If Alana still has this rabbit, it means she never stopped waiting for me.

Julian stared at the words.

His hands began to tremble.

Emma had written this.

Which meant...

She had hidden it before she disappeared.

Or...

She had returned after everyone believed she was dead.

At that exact moment...

The mansion's security intercom chimed.

Mr. Harris answered.

"Yes?"

The guard at the front gate sounded uncertain.

"Sir..."

"There's a woman here."

Mr. Harris frowned.

"Does she have an appointment?"

"No."

"She says..."

The guard hesitated.

"...she isn't here to see Mr. Hartwell."

"She only wants to see a little girl named Alana."

Julian slowly turned toward the bedroom window.

Outside, beyond the gates...

A lone woman stood beneath the fading evening light.

Her face was hidden behind dark sunglasses.

But something about the way she stood...

The way she held herself...

Felt hauntingly familiar.

Julian's heartbeat began to race.

May you like

Because for one impossible moment...

He thought he had just seen the ghost of his wife.
