Chapter 17 – The Choice That Could Change the World

The underground chamber fell into absolute silence.

Richard Hale's outstretched hand never wavered.

His expression remained calm.

Patient.

As though he already knew how the story would end.

The old leather Bible rested in Emma's trembling hands.

Inside it...

Hidden beneath pages worn by time...

Was the memory chip containing nearly three decades of evidence against Project Phoenix.

Hale smiled gently.

"You already know the answer."

Emma looked directly into his eyes.

"No."

"I know the question."

Victor Blackwood stood several steps behind Hale.

His pistol remained lowered.

For the first time since Emma had seen him again...

He looked uncertain.

Almost conflicted.

Julian noticed.

Victor wasn't looking at the Bible.

He was looking at Hale.

Watching him.

Studying him.

As if seeing him differently for the first time.

Alexander Carter quietly stepped closer to Emma.

"Don't."

She nodded almost imperceptibly.

"I won't."

Hale sighed.

"I hoped we'd avoid unnecessary bloodshed."

He raised one finger.

Instantly, a dozen mercenaries aimed their rifles.

Every laser sight settled on Julian.

Emma.

Alexander.

Even little Alana.

Julian instinctively stepped in front of his daughter.

"You'll have to shoot through me."

Hale smiled faintly.

"I expected nothing less."

Then...

Alana did something no one expected.

She gently slipped out from behind Julian.

"Sweetheart!"

Emma whispered.

But Alana kept walking.

Straight toward Richard Hale.

The room held its breath.

The eight-year-old stopped only a few feet away.

She looked up into Hale's face.

Completely fearless.

"My mommy says..."

"...bad people aren't born."

"They choose."

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Even Victor slowly turned to look at the little girl.

Alana tilted her head.

"Were you always bad?"

For the first time in decades...

Richard Hale didn't answer immediately.

Something flickered across his face.

Not guilt.

Not shame.

Memory.

He quietly looked away.

"My daughter..."

He whispered almost to himself.

"...used to ask questions like that."

Emma noticed the sadness that crossed his eyes.

Only for a second.

Then it disappeared.

Hale looked back at Alana.

"Go back to your parents."

She shook her head.

"If I do..."

"...will you stop hurting people?"

Victor slowly lowered his eyes.

The words struck him harder than any bullet.

Emma suddenly realized something.

Victor had never interrupted Hale.

Never challenged him.

Never made a decision without looking toward him first.

He wasn't simply loyal.

He was trapped.

Just as Victoria had been.

Emma turned toward Victor.

"How old were you..."

"...when Hale found you?"

Victor looked startled.

"What?"

"You were a child too, weren't you?"

No one had ever asked him that.

He remained silent.

Emma continued.

"He told you my family ruined yours."

"He raised you on hatred."

"He gave you revenge instead of a childhood."

Victor's jaw tightened.

"You know nothing."

Emma took one step closer.

"My mother lost everything because of him."

"You lost everything because of him."

"We were never enemies."

Hale's calm expression finally cracked.

"Enough."

Emma ignored him.

"You murdered for a lie."

Victor whispered,

"I believed him."

Emma nodded.

"I know."

Julian watched Victor carefully.

The ruthless man who had terrified governments...

Now looked like a broken boy searching for answers.

Alexander quietly whispered,

"It's working."

Hale's voice turned cold.

"Victor."

There was no response.

"Victor."

Still nothing.

Finally...

Victor slowly turned toward him.

"What if..."

He swallowed.

"What if she tells the truth?"

The room froze.

Hale's eyes narrowed.

"There is no truth."

"There is only order."

Victor looked at Emma again.

Then at the Bible.

Then at the countless memories that had haunted him for decades.

He remembered his mother.

Her laughter.

Her kindness.

Not once...

Not once had she ever spoken with hatred toward Margaret Carter.

The hatred had come later.

From Hale.

Always from Hale.

Victor slowly lowered his weapon.

The sound of metal hitting the floor echoed through Foundation Zero.

Every mercenary stared in disbelief.

Hale's voice became dangerously quiet.

"Pick it up."

Victor didn't move.

"I said..."

"...pick it up."

Victor looked him directly in the eyes.

For the first time in thirty years.

"No."

The word changed everything.

Several mercenaries exchanged uncertain glances.

They had always followed Victor.

Not Hale.

If Victor refused...

Who was truly in command?

Hale sighed deeply.

"What a disappointment."

He reached into his coat.

Pulled out a small remote control.

Alexander's face turned white.

"No!"

Samuel Reed shouted,

"Everyone get down!"

Hale pressed the button.

Nothing happened.

He frowned.

Pressed it again.

Still nothing.

His expression changed.

"What..."

Samuel smiled.

"Edward found your explosives twelve years ago."

"I disconnected every one."

For the first time...

Richard Hale looked afraid.

Julian didn't hesitate.

He lunged forward.

Victor moved at the same instant.

Not to stop Julian.

To stop Hale.

Both men tackled the Chairman simultaneously.

The remote flew across the floor.

Gunfire erupted.

Mercenaries split into two groups.

Half remained loyal to Hale.

The others followed Victor.

Foundation Zero became a battlefield.

Emma grabbed Alana.

Alexander and Samuel returned fire.

Eleanor hurried to protect Edward's journals.

The room filled with smoke, shattered glass, and deafening gunshots.

In the middle of the chaos...

The old Bible slipped from Emma's hands.

It landed near Hale.

The memory chip slid free.

Hale reached for it.

Emma dove after it.

Their hands touched the tiny chip at exactly the same moment.

They looked into each other's eyes.

Hale smiled one last time.

"You really are your mother's daughter."

Then—

A single gunshot echoed through the chamber.

Everything stopped.

Emma felt Hale's grip loosen.

A dark stain spread across his suit.

He looked down slowly.

Then back up.

Standing several feet away...

Victor Blackwood lowered the smoking pistol.

His hand trembled.

His voice barely escaped.

"You took everything from us..."

Richard Hale staggered backward.

For the first time in his life...

The man who had controlled presidents, judges, billionaires, and killers...

Fell to his knees.

As his body collapsed onto the cold stone floor...

He whispered five final words that chilled everyone in the room.

"You still don't know everything..."

Then he smiled.

And died.

Before anyone could react—

The lights throughout Foundation Zero suddenly went dark.

A computerized voice echoed through the chamber:

Chairman Status: Deceased.

Phoenix Protocol Activated.

Alexander's blood ran cold.

Julian looked at him.

"What is Phoenix Protocol?"

Alexander answered in horror.

May you like

"It means Hale planned for his own death..."

"...and the real leader is about to reveal themselves."
