CHAPTER 7 — The First Memory

Daniel folded the threatening note with deliberate care.
No anger crossed his face.
No panic.
Only absolute focus.
Everyone in the room knew that expression.
It was the same look he wore before dismantling hostile corporations, exposing financial conspiracies, or taking down people who believed they were untouchable.
Whoever had sent the message had made a catastrophic mistake.
They had turned a family scandal into a personal war.
Daniel handed the photograph to Ethan.
"Fingerprints."
Ethan nodded.
"I'll process it."
Marcus examined the broken window.
"There are almost no glass fragments outside."
Daniel looked over.
"What does that tell you?"
Marcus frowned.
"The window..."
"...was broken from the inside."
Silence.
Emma looked around the destroyed study.
"So whoever left the message..."
"...was already inside the house."
Ethan nodded.
"They staged a break-in."
Daniel slowly turned toward Marcus.
"Lock every entrance."
Marcus didn't hesitate.
"No one enters."
"No one leaves."
Within minutes, the Ashford estate resembled a fortress.
Security guards sealed every gate.
Vehicles were searched.
Phones were temporarily confiscated from staff and guests.
Victoria watched from the upstairs balcony, her heartbeat accelerating.
She had expected Daniel to investigate.
She had not expected him to quarantine his own family.
Rebecca hurried toward her.
"This is insane."
"They're treating us like criminals."
Victoria forced herself to remain calm.
"Then don't act like one."
Rebecca narrowed her eyes.
"You know something."
Victoria didn't answer.
Instead, she watched Daniel crossing the courtyard below.
He wasn't looking at people.
He was looking at patterns.
That frightened her more than anything else.
Meanwhile, Ethan had converted the mansion's library into a temporary forensic lab.
The photograph, envelope, and threatening note lay beneath specialized lights.
He adjusted the microscope.
"Hmm..."
Daniel looked up.
"What?"
"This paper."
Ethan held the envelope carefully.
"It isn't ordinary stationery."
Marcus glanced over.
"It looks normal."
"It isn't."
Ethan smiled faintly.
"Feel it."
Marcus did.
"It's... thicker."
"Exactly."
Ethan turned the envelope over.
"Handmade cotton fiber."
Daniel frowned.
"So?"
"So only a handful of manufacturers produce paper like this."
He pointed toward a faint watermark barely visible beneath ultraviolet light.
"There."
Daniel leaned closer.
The watermark consisted of a single embossed symbol.
An orchid.
No words.
Just the flower.
Ethan looked up.
"Project Orchid."
The room fell silent.
The note hadn't just threatened Emma.
It had identified its sender.
Emma sat alone in the sunroom overlooking the gardens.
Everything felt unreal.
She stared at the old photograph from Richard's safe.
The frightened little girl looked back at her.
Who had she been?
What had happened before the orphanage?
Why couldn't she remember?
Lily quietly entered carrying tea.
Emma smiled weakly.
"You always know when I need this."
Lily returned the smile.
"I've watched you long enough."
Emma looked down at the photograph.
"Lily..."
"Do you think memories can disappear forever?"
Lily thought carefully before answering.
"I don't."
Emma looked up.
"My grandmother used to say..."
"...the heart remembers what the mind forgets."
Emma's fingers tightened around the photograph.
The heart remembers...
Without warning...
A sharp pain exploded behind her eyes.
She gasped.
The teacup slipped from her hands and shattered against the floor.
Lily rushed forward.
"Emma!"
Emma barely heard her.
The room around her dissolved.
Darkness.
Cold.
The smell of antiseptic.
A bright white light.
Someone crying.
A little girl's voice.
"No..."
"I don't want another injection..."
Footsteps echoed.
A woman's gentle voice answered.
"It'll be over soon."
Claire.
Emma somehow knew it was Claire.
The little girl looked up.
Claire smiled sadly.
"I'm sorry."
"I promised I'd protect you."
Another voice interrupted.
Cold.
Elegant.
Controlled.
Victoria.
"If she remembers..."
"...none of us survive."
Emma's heart pounded.
The memory shifted.
Metal restraints.
A needle.
Claire suddenly grabbed the syringe.
"No!"
Victoria shouted.
"You'll ruin everything!"
Claire whispered urgently to the little girl.
"Listen to me."
"If you ever forget..."
"...find the music box."
The memory shattered.
Emma screamed.
Her eyes flew open.
She found herself lying on the sunroom sofa.
Daniel knelt beside her.
His face was filled with concern.
"Emma."
She struggled to breathe.
"I remembered."
Daniel immediately leaned closer.
"What?"
She looked directly into his eyes.
"A music box."
Daniel frowned.
"What music box?"
"I don't know."
"But Claire said..."
"...if I ever forgot..."
"...I had to find it."
The room fell silent.
Ethan, who had just entered, exchanged a glance with Daniel.
Memories.
They were returning.
Exactly as Claire's letter had predicted.
Across the hall...
Victoria stood frozen outside the partially open door.
She had heard everything.
The color drained from her face.
"No..."
she whispered.
"It can't be happening."
Rebecca approached quietly.
"What happened?"
Victoria grabbed her sister's arm.
"Emma remembered something."
Rebecca blinked.
"So?"
Victoria's voice shook for the first time in years.
"You don't understand."
"If Emma remembers everything..."
"...we're finished."
Daniel immediately gathered everyone in the library.
He spread the old estate blueprints across the table.
"A music box."
Marcus looked confused.
"How do we search for that?"
Daniel pointed toward the original floor plan.
"My grandfather designed this house."
"There are hidden rooms."
"Secret storage spaces."
"If Claire hid something..."
"...she wouldn't choose an obvious place."
Ethan suddenly looked thoughtful.
"Music."
Daniel turned.
"What?"
"The mansion."
"It has a music room."
Marcus shrugged.
"So?"
Ethan smiled slightly.
"When people hide something important..."
"They usually hide it somewhere meaningful."
Daniel looked toward the east wing.
"The old music room."
The room hadn't been used in years.
Dust covered the grand piano.
Old violins rested inside cracked display cases.
Portraits of long-dead Ashford musicians lined the walls.
Emma stepped inside.
Immediately...
A strange feeling washed over her.
She had never entered this room before.
At least...
She didn't think she had.
Yet every corner felt familiar.
Daniel noticed.
"What is it?"
Emma slowly walked toward the piano.
"I've been here."
Marcus frowned.
"That's impossible."
Emma reached the piano bench.
Without thinking...
She knelt.
Her fingers brushed beneath the seat.
Then...
Click.
A hidden compartment opened.
Everyone froze.
Inside lay only one object.
A small wooden music box.
Delicately carved with orchids.
Emma stared at it in silence.
Her hands trembled as she lifted the lid.
The old mechanism began to play.
A soft lullaby echoed through the empty room.
The melody was hauntingly beautiful.
Then...
Emma gasped.
More memories flooded her mind.
Claire kneeling beside her.
The same music box.
Claire placing something inside.
A tiny silver key.
Claire whispering through tears:
"Never let Victoria find this."
Emma suddenly stopped the music.
She reached inside.
The music box was empty.
Except...
It wasn't.
Hidden beneath the velvet lining...
Her fingers touched cold metal.
She carefully lifted it out.
A tiny silver key.
No larger than her thumb.
Daniel took a slow breath.
"What does it open?"
Before anyone could answer...
Marcus's radio crackled violently.
"Mr. Hill!"
Marcus grabbed it.
"What is it?"
The guard's voice came through, panicked.
"We have a body."
The room fell silent.
Marcus's face hardened.
"Where?"
"...In the greenhouse."
"And, sir..."
He hesitated.
"You need to see this."
May you like
"Because..."
"...it's Claire Bennett."
