CHAPTER 19 — The Sister Who Remembered

Silence swept through the underground garden.

Two hundred and forty-three subjects.

The number echoed in Daniel's mind like a death sentence.

What had begun as an experiment on eighteen children had become an industrial operation.

Generations of stolen lives.

Emma looked around at the young faces standing motionless in white uniforms.

Some were barely six years old.

Others were adults.

None of them spoke.

None of them cried.

None of them even looked frightened.

It was as if they had forgotten how.

Daniel clenched his fists.

"This ends today."

Michael Lawson's voice drifted through the speakers.

"You're too late."

In the control room high above the garden, Michael calmly watched every monitor.

A technician looked uneasy.

"Should we activate Protocol Zero?"

Michael smiled.

"Not yet."

"What if they reach the archive?"

"They won't."

He turned his attention back to Evelyn.

"She's my insurance."

Emma slowly stepped toward her sister.

"Evelyn..."

No response.

She took another step.

"It's me."

Evelyn's expression remained blank.

"I know who you are."

Emma fought back tears.

"Do you remember the promise?"

A faint wrinkle appeared between Evelyn's brows.

Daniel noticed.

She was trying to remember.

Emma whispered,

"If they separate us..."

Nothing.

Claire, standing several feet behind Emma, quietly finished the sentence.

"...we'll find each other again."

Evelyn's breathing changed.

Only slightly.

But Daniel saw it.

A crack had appeared.

Suddenly—

Michael's voice thundered through hidden speakers.

"Subject Eighteen."

Evelyn immediately straightened.

"Yes, Doctor."

"Eliminate the intruders."

Emma's heart stopped.

"No..."

Evelyn slowly reached beneath her jacket.

Marcus drew his weapon.

"Daniel!"

Daniel raised a hand.

"Don't shoot."

Evelyn pulled out...

Not a gun.

A small remote control.

She pressed the button.

Instantly, heavy steel blast doors slammed shut throughout the facility.

Emergency lights turned crimson.

Sirens screamed.

Ethan's voice burst over the radio.

"They've sealed every exit!"

The children in white uniforms began walking.

Not running.

Walking.

Perfectly synchronized.

Toward Daniel's team.

Marcus looked horrified.

"They're using children as shields."

Daniel lowered his weapon.

"No one fires."

Michael laughed through the speakers.

"I knew you wouldn't."

The children surrounded them.

Not aggressively.

Simply standing.

Watching.

Waiting.

Emma looked into the eyes of a little boy no older than seven.

He smiled politely.

"Doctor says you're dangerous."

Emma knelt before him.

"What's your name?"

The boy hesitated.

Then quietly answered,

"I don't have one."

Emma's eyes filled with tears.

"What do they call you?"

"Subject Ninety-One."

Daniel felt a surge of anger unlike anything he had ever known.

They hadn't only stolen these children's childhoods.

They had stolen their names.

Meanwhile...

Ethan had reached the central data archive.

Rows of servers stretched into the darkness.

He quickly connected his portable drive.

Marcus's voice crackled through his radio.

"How long?"

"Five minutes."

"You don't have five."

Security alarms grew louder.

Boots echoed through the corridors.

Michael's guards were closing in.

Ethan kept copying the files.

"This evidence is worth everything."

Back in the garden...

Emma reached into her pocket.

She slowly removed the old photograph.

The one showing two smiling twin girls.

She held it toward Evelyn.

"You kept this."

Evelyn looked at the picture.

Something flickered in her eyes.

"My..."

She hesitated.

"My sister..."

Michael's voice immediately interrupted.

"Look at me, Evelyn."

She froze.

Emma saw the conflict.

One part of Evelyn wanted to remember.

Another had been trained not to.

Emma stepped closer.

"You used to sing."

Silence.

"The lavender song."

Claire gasped.

"You remember?"

Emma nodded.

"Our mother sang it every night."

Without thinking...

Emma began humming the melody Sarah had recorded years earlier.

Softly.

Gently.

The same lullaby.

The same rhythm.

The same love.

The entire underground garden became silent.

Even the children stopped moving.

Evelyn closed her eyes.

The melody reached somewhere no experiment had ever touched.

A memory.

Tiny.

Fragile.

She saw sunlight.

Two little girls chasing butterflies.

A woman laughing.

Lavender flowers.

Then—

She heard her own childish voice.

"Emma, wait for me!"

Her eyes flew open.

Tears spilled down her cheeks.

"Emma..."

For the first time in sixteen years...

She said her sister's name.

Michael's smile vanished.

"No."

He grabbed a microphone.

"Evelyn!"

She didn't answer.

"Evelyn!"

She took another step toward Emma.

Michael slammed his fist onto the console.

"Activate Protocol Zero!"

Technicians hesitated.

"Doctor..."

"NOW!"

A red switch was pulled.

Across the underground complex...

A mechanical voice announced:

Facility self-destruct sequence initiated.

Daniel looked up sharply.

"What?"

Ethan shouted through the radio.

"He planted explosives!"

Countdown timers lit up across every hallway.

15:00

Marcus cursed.

"We have fifteen minutes!"

Chaos erupted.

Some researchers fled.

Others locked themselves inside secure rooms.

Children looked around in confusion.

They had never experienced fear before.

Emma grabbed Evelyn's hands.

"Come with me."

Evelyn stared at her.

"I..."

Michael's voice echoed one last time.

"If you leave..."

"...she dies."

Evelyn froze.

Emma frowned.

"What does he mean?"

Evelyn slowly rolled up her sleeve.

Embedded beneath the skin of her wrist...

A tiny electronic implant blinked red.

Claire covered her mouth.

"Oh God..."

Michael's voice became calm again.

"I told you."

"Evelyn is my insurance."

"If her heart leaves this facility..."

"...the implant detonates."

Daniel's blood ran cold.

It wasn't just a tracker.

It was a bomb.

Emma looked at her sister.

"We'll get it out."

Evelyn smiled sadly.

"You don't have enough time."

The countdown reached:

13:42

At that exact moment...

Ethan's voice exploded through the radio.

"Daniel!"

"I found Henry Lawson!"

Daniel stopped.

"What?"

"He's alive!"

"Where?"

Ethan answered breathlessly.

"Level Twelve."

"And he's trying to shut the countdown off!"

Hope returned in an instant.

If Henry was alive...

Then maybe...

May you like

Just maybe...

There was still time to save everyone.
