CHAPTER 11 — The Observatory in Flames

The explosion shook the Ashford estate like an earthquake.
Crystal chandeliers swayed violently.
Windows rattled throughout the mansion.
Smoke billowed above the northern hill where the old observatory stood, turning the morning sky into a haze of gray and black.
Daniel was already running before the alarms stopped.
"Marcus!"
"I'm with you!"
Ethan grabbed his forensic case and followed close behind.
Emma instinctively took a step after them.
Daniel turned sharply.
"No."
She met his eyes.
"I'm not staying behind."
"They're hunting me."
"If we split up..."
"They win."
For a brief moment, Daniel hesitated.
Then he nodded.
"Stay beside me."
"I won't let you out of my sight."
Within minutes, they reached the observatory.
Or what remained of it.
The century-old stone building was engulfed in flames.
The copper dome had collapsed inward.
Burning timber crashed through the roof.
Firefighters from the estate's private emergency unit fought desperately to contain the blaze.
Marcus stared at the destruction.
"They got here first."
Daniel didn't answer.
His eyes searched every corner.
Something felt...
Wrong.
The fire spread too evenly.
Too quickly.
Almost as if it had been planned.
Ethan crouched beside the entrance.
He picked up a handful of gray powder.
He rubbed it between his fingers.
"This wasn't caused by gas."
Daniel looked down.
"What is it?"
"Thermite."
Marcus frowned.
"The military explosive?"
Ethan nodded.
"It burns hotter than almost anything."
"It destroys metal."
"It destroys evidence."
Daniel's expression darkened.
"Someone wanted this place erased."
A firefighter hurried toward them.
"Mr. Ashford!"
Daniel turned.
"What?"
"We found someone."
Marcus's hand instinctively moved toward his holstered pistol.
"Alive?"
The firefighter nodded.
"Barely."
They followed him behind the observatory.
An elderly man lay unconscious beside the stone wall.
His clothes were burned.
His hands were covered in soot.
One side of his forehead bled heavily.
Emma gasped.
"I know him."
Daniel looked at her.
"You do?"
She frowned.
"I..."
"No."
"I don't know him."
"But..."
She pressed a hand against her temple.
"I've seen him."
A fragment of memory flashed.
A warm smile.
A chessboard.
A little girl laughing.
The same elderly man saying,
"One day you'll beat me."
The memory disappeared.
Emma whispered,
"He taught me chess..."
Daniel exchanged a look with Ethan.
More memories.
They were returning faster now.
The estate physician examined the old man.
A minute later, he looked up.
"He's alive."
Marcus exhaled.
"Who is he?"
The doctor searched the man's pockets.
Only one item remained.
A leather wallet.
Inside...
An old employee identification card.
The faded photograph matched the man's face.
Name:
Thomas Greene.
Position:
Groundskeeper.
Ashford Estate.
Retired...
Nine years earlier.
Daniel frowned.
"I remember him."
Marcus nodded.
"He disappeared after your father's funeral."
The doctor suddenly looked surprised.
"Wait."
He turned the ID card over.
A handwritten note had been tucked behind the photograph.
Only one sentence.
Protect the stars.
Daniel looked toward the burning observatory.
"The stars..."
Ethan whispered,
"The observatory."
Thomas hadn't come here by accident.
He had been guarding something.
Two hours later...
The fire was finally under control.
Most of the building had collapsed.
Only the stone foundation remained standing.
Marcus walked carefully through the ruins.
"There won't be anything left."
Ethan wasn't convinced.
"Richard Ashford built this observatory himself."
"So?"
"He didn't trust ordinary safes."
Daniel suddenly understood.
"He would have hidden things underground."
Marcus immediately called for excavation equipment.
While crews cleared the rubble...
Claire insisted on seeing Thomas.
Against the doctor's advice, she was wheeled into the estate's medical wing.
The moment she saw the unconscious groundskeeper...
She burst into tears.
Daniel had never seen Claire cry before.
She reached for Thomas's burned hand.
"I'm sorry..."
Her voice broke.
"I'm so sorry."
Daniel watched quietly.
"You know him."
Claire nodded.
"He saved Emma."
Silence.
Emma stepped forward.
"He saved me?"
Claire smiled through her tears.
"The night we escaped..."
"Thomas drove us away."
"He gave us new identities."
"He buried every record that could lead Victoria to you."
Emma looked at the old man with new eyes.
The stranger who had risked everything...
To save a little girl she couldn't even remember being.
Late that afternoon...
Thomas finally regained consciousness.
His breathing was weak.
His eyes slowly opened.
He looked around the room.
Confused.
Then...
His gaze settled on Emma.
A gentle smile spread across his weathered face.
"There you are..."
Emma stepped closer.
"You know me?"
Thomas's eyes filled with tears.
"I promised your mother..."
"...I'd see you again."
Emma knelt beside him.
"My mother..."
"Sarah."
Thomas nodded slowly.
"She loved you more than life itself."
Emma struggled to hold back tears.
"What happened to her?"
Thomas closed his eyes.
"For nine years..."
"I prayed..."
"...you'd never ask me that."
Daniel leaned forward.
"Thomas."
"We need the truth."
Thomas looked at him.
"The truth..."
"...is buried beneath the observatory."
Marcus frowned.
"We just lost the observatory."
Thomas smiled weakly.
"No..."
"You lost the building."
His trembling hand reached into his shirt.
Around his neck hung an old bronze pendant.
He pulled it free.
It wasn't a pendant.
It was a key.
Large.
Heavy.
Covered with strange engravings.
Daniel immediately recognized the symbol.
An orchid.
Thomas placed the key into Emma's hand.
"Your mother gave me this."
Emma looked at it in silence.
"What does it open?"
Thomas whispered,
"The stars."
Everyone exchanged confused looks.
"The stars?"
Thomas nodded.
"The observatory..."
"...was never the hiding place."
Daniel frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Thomas smiled faintly.
"It was only..."
"...the entrance."
Silence filled the room.
Ethan slowly looked toward the ruins outside.
"If the observatory was only the entrance..."
Marcus finished the thought.
"...then there's something underneath it."
Thomas closed his eyes again.
"There always was."
At sunset...
Excavation crews finally reached the observatory's stone foundation.
A worker shouted.
"Mr. Ashford!"
Daniel hurried over.
"What is it?"
The worker brushed away layers of ash and broken concrete.
A circular steel hatch emerged from beneath the debris.
Nearly six feet across.
Untouched by the fire.
No handle.
Only one keyhole.
Perfectly shaped...
For the bronze orchid key now resting in Emma's hand.
Daniel looked at Emma.
"This is why they destroyed the observatory."
Emma nodded silently.
Whatever waited beneath that hatch...
Had been important enough for someone to kill.
Important enough to fake deaths.
Erase childhoods.
Poison witnesses.
Destroy buildings.
Daniel stepped aside.
"It's yours."
Emma's hands trembled as she inserted the bronze key into the ancient lock.
It turned with a deep metallic click.
Then...
The earth itself seemed to groan.
Ancient gears hidden beneath the stone foundation slowly awakened after years of silence.
The massive steel hatch began to open.
Cold air rushed upward from the darkness below.
A staircase disappeared into the earth.
And from somewhere deep underground...
A woman's voice echoed through hidden speakers.
Soft.
Calm.
Unmistakable.
Claire gasped.
Emma froze.
Daniel's heart stopped.
Because the voice belonged to only one person.
Sarah.
Emma's mother.
May you like
And somehow...
She was speaking to them.
