CHAPTER 17 — The Facility That Never Closed

The satellite photographs lay scattered across the conference table.
No one spoke.
The image of the playground haunted every person in the room.
A brightly painted slide.
Colorful swings.
Flower beds.
Everything looked cheerful.
Normal.
But Daniel had learned that the most dangerous lies often wore the kindest faces.
He looked toward Ethan.
"Can you confirm children are actually there?"
Ethan enlarged the thermal images taken only hours earlier.
Red and yellow silhouettes appeared across the screen.
He counted quietly.
"One..."
"Five..."
"Twelve..."
His expression darkened.
"Twenty-six heat signatures."
Marcus frowned.
"Adults?"
Ethan shook his head.
"Most are too small."
Daniel understood immediately.
"Children."
Claire slowly sat down.
Her hands trembled.
"It never stopped..."
She had spent nine years believing Project Orchid had died with Richard Ashford.
Instead...
It had evolved.
Emma couldn't take her eyes off the satellite image.
The playground reminded her of Saint Mary's Orphanage.
Children laughing.
Playing.
Trusting the adults around them.
How many of them knew the truth?
How many believed they were simply living in another home?
She whispered,
"We have to get them out."
Daniel looked at her.
"We will."
Emma shook her head.
"No."
"We have to do it before Michael realizes we found the facility."
Before Daniel could answer—
Ethan's laptop chimed.
A new signal.
He frowned.
"Someone's accessing the estate's network again."
Marcus immediately reached for his radio.
"Lock everything down."
Ethan raised a hand.
"No."
"This isn't another attack."
"What is it?"
"It's..."
He paused.
"A video call."
Everyone looked at the screen.
The caller ID read only:
UNKNOWN
Daniel answered without hesitation.
The screen flickered.
Static filled the monitor.
Then...
A woman's face appeared.
Emma froze.
It was like looking into a mirror.
Same eyes.
Same hair.
Same face.
Only one difference.
The woman on the screen smiled.
Emma didn't.
Claire whispered,
"Evelyn..."
For several seconds...
Neither sister spoke.
They simply stared at one another.
Nine years of separation.
Nine years of lies.
Nine years of pain.
Reduced to a single silent moment.
Finally...
The woman tilted her head.
"So..."
Her voice was calm.
"They told you about me."
Emma's eyes filled with tears.
"Evelyn?"
The woman considered the name.
"I suppose."
Emma took a small step toward the screen.
"I'm your sister."
The woman remained expressionless.
"No."
Emma frowned.
"Yes."
"We're twins."
The woman slowly shook her head.
"Dr. Lawson says you're mistaken."
Daniel stepped forward.
"Who told you that?"
She looked directly at him.
"My father."
Claire's heart sank.
Michael had become everything to Evelyn.
Teacher.
Protector.
Family.
Emma whispered,
"Our mother loved you."
For the first time...
Something changed in Evelyn's eyes.
A flicker.
Barely visible.
Then it disappeared.
"I don't have a mother."
The words struck Emma harder than any weapon could have.
Michael Lawson stepped into view behind Evelyn.
He smiled politely.
"Good evening, Daniel."
Daniel's voice became ice.
"Where is Henry?"
Michael chuckled.
"You ask the wrong questions."
Daniel ignored him.
"You kidnapped children."
Michael shrugged.
"I saved them."
Claire couldn't stay silent.
"You destroyed them!"
Michael looked toward her.
"Claire."
"I was wondering how long you'd survive."
Claire stared back.
"You murdered Sarah."
For the first time...
Michael's smile faded.
"No."
"I gave Sarah a choice."
Emma looked up.
"What choice?"
Michael answered without emotion.
"One daughter..."
"...or two dead daughters."
Silence.
Emma couldn't breathe.
Michael continued.
"She chose you."
Claire shouted,
"You're lying!"
Michael smiled again.
"Am I?"
He looked at Evelyn.
"Ask your sister."
Evelyn quietly spoke.
"That's what you told me."
Emma saw it instantly.
Every memory Evelyn possessed...
Had been carefully rewritten.
Daniel leaned toward the camera.
"What do you want?"
Michael answered simply.
"Come and get her."
Marcus looked at Daniel.
"It's a trap."
Michael laughed.
"Of course it is."
He wasn't even pretending otherwise.
Daniel's expression never changed.
"I'll still come."
Michael nodded.
"I know."
The screen went black.
Silence lingered in the room.
Emma wiped away tears.
"She's alive."
Claire nodded.
"But she's still his prisoner."
Thomas slowly spoke from his wheelchair.
"No."
Everyone turned toward him.
Thomas looked at Emma.
"The saddest prisons..."
"...don't have locked doors."
Emma understood immediately.
Evelyn didn't believe she was trapped.
She believed she was home.
Late that night...
Ethan finally decoded one of Richard Ashford's encrypted hard drives.
Most of the files contained research notes.
Then...
One folder labeled:
Failsafe
Daniel opened it.
Inside was a single video.
Richard appeared older.
Exhausted.
He looked directly into the camera.
If Michael is still alive...
Then everything else has failed.
Daniel listened silently.
Richard continued.
There is only one way to stop him.
Marcus frowned.
Richard looked down before continuing.
Michael never feared governments.
He never feared prison.
He only feared one person.
Claire whispered,
"Henry."
Richard slowly shook his head on the recording.
No.
His daughter.
Everyone stared.
Emma frowned.
"What?"
Richard spoke the final sentence.
Evelyn remembers far more than Michael realizes.
The recording ended.
Daniel looked toward Emma.
"What if Richard was right?"
Claire's eyes widened.
"The conditioning..."
Ethan finished her thought.
"...was never complete."
Hope returned to the room for the first time in days.
Perhaps somewhere beneath Evelyn's carefully constructed identity...
The little girl who once held Emma's hand...
Was still alive.
The next morning...
Daniel stood before a map of Northridge Sanatorium.
Security patrols.
Escape routes.
Underground entrances.
Marcus finished briefing the team.
"Everything's ready."
Daniel nodded.
"No police."
Marcus looked surprised.
"You don't trust them?"
Daniel answered quietly.
"I don't know who Michael owns."
Claire looked at Emma.
"You don't have to go."
Emma shook her head.
"I made my sister a promise."
Claire frowned.
"What promise?"
Emma smiled sadly.
"It took me sixteen years to remember."
Then she looked toward the rising sun.
"But I finally did."
She whispered the words that had returned in her memory.
"If they separate us..."
Tears filled Claire's eyes as she finished the sentence.
"...we'll find each other again."
Emma nodded.
"It's time to keep that promise."
As the convoy prepared to leave the Ashford estate...
No one noticed the tiny drone hovering high above the trees.
Its camera followed every vehicle.
Hundreds of miles away...
Michael Lawson watched the live feed.
He smiled.
"They're coming."
Then he looked toward Evelyn.
"Get ready."
She stood silently.
"Ready for what?"
Michael's answer was chilling.
May you like
"To meet the sister..."
"...who was always meant to replace you."
