CHAPTER 1 — Secure the Glass

The silence inside the Ashford mansion felt unnatural.
Not peaceful.
Not calm.
It was the kind of silence that existed only seconds before lives changed forever.
Daniel Ashford pushed open the front door after a fourteen-hour flight from Zurich. His shoulders ached beneath his tailored charcoal coat, and the familiar scent of cedarwood and polished marble greeted him as it always had.
Home.
At least, it was supposed to feel like home.
Instead, he heard screaming.
"She's trying to kill me!"
The shrill voice echoed from the dining room before Daniel had even taken three steps inside.
Victoria.
His mother.
Then another voice, trembling but firm.
"I didn't poison anyone."
Emma.
Daniel's pace quickened.
By the time he reached the dining room, nearly twenty people had gathered.
Family members.
House staff.
Two security guards.
The family physician.
Everyone stood frozen around the long walnut dining table.
Victoria Ashford lay half-slumped in her chair, one elegant hand gripping her throat dramatically. Crystal water had spilled across the polished wood, dripping onto the Persian rug beneath her.
A shattered wineglass glittered across the floor.
Emma stood only a few feet away.
Her face was pale.
One hand still held the silver water pitcher.
The other shook uncontrollably.
Victoria pointed at her with a trembling finger.
"She tried to poison me."
Gasps rippled through the room.
Daniel said nothing.
He looked first at Emma.
She wasn't crying.
She wasn't pleading.
She simply stared back at him with exhausted eyes.
Eyes that asked only one question.
Will you believe me?
Daniel had learned long ago that panic often hid guilt.
Emma wasn't panicking.
She looked devastated.
Across the room, Victoria coughed violently into an embroidered handkerchief.
The family doctor hurried beside her.
"We need an ambulance."
Victoria grabbed his sleeve.
"No..."
She forced another cough.
"I'll survive."
Then she turned toward Daniel with tears running perfectly down her cheeks.
"But she wanted me dead."
Several relatives immediately surrounded Victoria.
"I always knew Emma wasn't right."
"She's after the Ashford fortune."
"Daniel, you have to call the police."
One cousin even pulled out his phone.
Emma finally spoke.
"I never poisoned her."
No one listened.
One accusation after another crashed over her.
"Liar."
"Murderer."
"Gold digger."
Daniel remained perfectly still.
His expression revealed nothing.
Emma searched his face desperately.
For two years, they had built a marriage on trust.
But Daniel Ashford was known for one thing above everything else.
He trusted facts.
Not emotions.
Not appearances.
Facts.
Victoria noticed his silence and smiled inwardly.
Everything was unfolding exactly as she had planned.
For months she had tried to drive Emma out of the family.
Subtle insults hadn't worked.
Public humiliation had failed.
Even convincing the board that Emma was damaging the family's reputation accomplished nothing.
Daniel always defended his wife.
So Victoria had chosen a more permanent solution.
Frame Emma.
Destroy her completely.
Once the police arrived, Emma's fingerprints would be found on the pitcher.
Everyone had watched her pour the water.
Every witness would swear Emma handed Victoria the glass.
The case would be airtight.
Daniel would have no choice but to leave her.
Victoria had rehearsed every detail.
Except one.
Daniel suddenly spoke.
"What happened?"
His voice was calm.
Almost too calm.
Victoria immediately answered.
"She brought me water."
Another cough.
"I drank it..."
She clutched her chest dramatically.
"My throat started burning."
Emma interrupted quietly.
"That's not true."
Victoria's eyes flashed.
"You dare call me a liar?"
Emma looked directly at Daniel.
"I filled that pitcher in the kitchen."
She swallowed.
"I poured everyone water."
Daniel nodded once.
"Then?"
"I turned to refill Lily's glass."
"The next thing I heard..."
Emma looked toward Victoria.
"...was screaming."
Victoria laughed bitterly.
"Of course she'd say that."
One uncle slammed his fist against the table.
"What more proof do you need?"
Daniel ignored him.
Instead, he walked toward the dining table.
Slowly.
Methodically.
His eyes scanned everything.
The spilled water.
The broken glass.
The untouched desserts.
The overturned chair.
Even the tiny droplets glistening beneath the chandelier.
Most people saw chaos.
Daniel saw information.
He crouched beside the shattered glass.
One security guard stepped forward.
"Sir, be careful."
Daniel didn't answer.
He noticed something.
The water had spread across nearly half the table.
Yet one crystal tumbler remained standing.
Perfectly upright.
Half full.
No fingerprints visible from this distance.
Interesting.
Very interesting.
Victoria watched him nervously.
Why wasn't he yelling?
Why wasn't he comforting her?
Why wasn't he demanding Emma explain herself?
Instead...
He studied the room like an investigator arriving at a crime scene.
Daniel stood.
His gaze shifted toward the ceiling.
"There are cameras."
The room fell silent.
One maid looked up instinctively.
Victoria's heartbeat skipped.
Daniel continued.
"Dining room."
"Kitchen."
"Hallway."
He counted quietly.
"Four angles."
Emma looked at him in disbelief.
Victoria forced another cough.
"The cameras don't matter."
Daniel looked at her for the first time since entering.
"They matter."
Something inside Victoria tightened.
She hadn't expected that.
She had assumed emotion would overwhelm logic.
Instead...
Daniel hadn't reacted emotionally at all.
He removed his phone.
Within seconds, the head of estate security answered.
"Yes, Mr. Ashford?"
"I want every camera recording from today."
"Immediately."
"Yes, sir."
"And lock the server."
"No one touches it."
Victoria felt the blood drain from her face.
No.
The footage...
Had anyone noticed?
Had any camera captured...
No.
It couldn't have.
She had been careful.
Hadn't she?
The ambulance finally arrived.
Paramedics rushed inside.
One examined Victoria.
Another reached for the remaining glass on the table.
"I'll dispose of this."
Daniel's hand stopped him.
"No."
The medic blinked.
"Sir?"
Daniel's eyes never left the glass.
His voice remained perfectly steady.
"So no one contaminates potential evidence..."
He turned toward the head of security, who had just entered.
Then he quietly gave one order.
"Secure the glass."
No shouting.
No accusations.
Just four words.
The atmosphere changed instantly.
The security guards moved without hesitation.
White evidence gloves.
Sterile evidence bag.
Photographs from every angle.
Even the family doctor looked confused.
Victoria's breathing became shallow.
Why was he treating this like a criminal investigation?
Because if they tested the glass...
No...
Impossible.
Unless...
Daniel walked toward Emma.
Everyone held their breath.
Victoria smiled faintly.
This was the moment.
He would abandon her.
He would ask security to escort Emma out.
Instead...
Daniel stopped inches away from his wife.
For several seconds, neither of them spoke.
Finally, he reached out.
Not to restrain her.
Not to accuse her.
But to gently take her trembling hand.
His voice was barely above a whisper.
"I believe you're telling the truth."
Emma's eyes filled with tears.
Not because she had been saved.
Because she realized she had almost lost everything.
Across the room...
Victoria's smile disappeared.
For the first time in years...
She was afraid.
She had planned every move.
Every witness.
Every accusation.
But she had forgotten one thing about her son.
Daniel Ashford had built a billion-dollar empire by trusting evidence...
Not people.
May you like
And somewhere inside that untouched crystal glass...
The truth was still waiting.
