CHAPTER 13 — The Twin They Erased

No one moved.
Emma continued staring at the photograph.
Two little girls.
The same dark hair.
The same gray eyes.
The same tiny birthmark beneath the left ear.
One was unmistakably Emma.
The other...
Looked like her reflection.
Only one difference separated them.
While Emma smiled timidly at the camera...
The other little girl never smiled at all.
Her eyes seemed strangely empty.
As if fear had already become part of her.
Emma's voice was barely audible.
"I had a sister..."
Claire lowered her head.
"I'm so sorry."
Daniel carefully took the photograph.
On the back...
Someone had written in black ink.
Subject 17 — Emma
Subject 18 — Evelyn
Emma blinked.
"Evelyn..."
She whispered the name several times.
It felt unfamiliar.
Yet painfully close.
Almost like a forgotten song.
Then—
Another memory struck.
A little girl hiding beneath a bed.
Someone whispering.
"Don't cry."
Emma looked up.
The voice wasn't her own.
Another child answered.
"I'm scared."
Small hands reached through the darkness.
Two little girls held each other's fingers.
One whispered,
"If they separate us..."
"...remember our secret."
The memory shattered.
Emma gasped.
"I remember..."
Claire leaned forward.
"What?"
"We hid together."
"In a room."
"There were metal beds."
"And..."
Emma squeezed her eyes shut.
"We promised..."
"...never to forget each other."
Tears rolled down Claire's cheeks.
"They separated you the next morning."
Daniel looked toward Claire.
"Why?"
Claire's expression filled with regret.
"Because the twins reacted differently."
Ethan frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Claire took a deep breath.
"The Orchid trials affected every child."
"But..."
"They affected the twins in completely opposite ways."
Daniel listened carefully.
"Emma resisted every chemical."
Claire nodded.
"Her memories survived."
"Her immune system adapted."
Ethan looked down at the files.
"And Evelyn?"
Claire's voice became almost a whisper.
"She didn't resist."
Silence.
"The chemicals changed her."
Marcus folded his arms.
"What kind of changes?"
Claire hesitated.
Then answered honestly.
"We don't know."
"The project was shut down before we finished studying her."
Daniel frowned.
"So Subject Eighteen..."
"...was never transferred."
Claire slowly shook her head.
"No."
"She disappeared."
Meanwhile...
Across the estate...
Victoria stood alone inside Richard's abandoned study.
She had secretly slipped away while everyone else searched the underground bunker.
She walked directly to the fireplace.
Kneeling, she reached beneath the stone mantel.
Her fingers found a hidden switch.
Click.
A small compartment opened.
Inside lay a velvet pouch.
Victoria smiled for the first time all day.
"So Richard..."
"...you hid it here."
She opened the pouch.
Inside rested a small brass key.
Unlike Emma's silver key...
This one bore a different engraving.
A black orchid.
Victoria's smile widened.
"They still don't know."
She slipped the key into her pocket.
Then froze.
A voice spoke behind her.
"Looking for something?"
Victoria spun around.
Daniel stood in the doorway.
His expression unreadable.
She forced a smile.
"I was remembering your father."
Daniel slowly entered the room.
"Were you?"
Victoria nodded.
"He loved this house."
Daniel looked toward the open compartment beneath the fireplace.
"What was in there?"
Victoria answered without hesitation.
"Nothing."
Daniel walked closer.
He knelt beside the fireplace.
The compartment was empty.
Fresh dust surrounded it.
Someone had removed something only moments ago.
He stood again.
"My security cameras saw you enter."
Victoria smiled politely.
"I'm allowed inside my own home."
Daniel looked directly into her eyes.
"For now."
For the first time...
Victoria felt genuinely threatened by her own son.
That evening...
Ethan continued examining the underground archive.
Hundreds of research logs.
Most had deteriorated with time.
One notebook remained perfectly preserved.
Its title read:
Behavioral Comparison — Subjects 17 & 18
He opened it carefully.
The first pages contained psychological evaluations.
Emma.
Kind.
Protective.
Empathetic.
Highly independent.
Evelyn.
Quiet.
Observant.
Emotionally withdrawn.
Exceptional memory.
Then...
Near the end...
A page had been torn out.
Only jagged edges remained.
Someone had deliberately removed it.
Marcus frowned.
"What was on that page?"
Ethan turned the notebook toward the light.
Faint impressions remained.
Indented writing.
Almost invisible.
He smiled.
"Maybe they didn't remove everything."
Using oblique lighting and digital enhancement, Ethan slowly reconstructed the missing words.
One sentence appeared first.
Subject 18 demonstrates complete obedience...
Another line emerged.
Conditioning successful.
Daniel felt a chill.
Conditioning?
Then the final sentence became readable.
The room fell silent.
If necessary... Subject 18 can replace Subject 17 permanently.
Emma stared at the words.
"What does that mean?"
No one answered immediately.
Because everyone understood.
Too well.
Claire slowly sat down.
"I prayed..."
"...Richard destroyed that research."
Daniel looked at her.
"Replace Emma?"
Claire nodded.
Victoria's original plan had never been to kill Emma.
Not immediately.
She wanted...
A substitute.
Someone who looked exactly like Emma.
Thought like Emma.
Spoke like Emma.
But obeyed only Victoria.
Marcus whispered,
"My God..."
Claire closed her eyes.
"Evelyn wasn't just another test subject."
"She was being trained..."
"...to become Emma."
Emma suddenly remembered another fragment.
Two little girls standing before a mirror.
A woman speaking softly behind them.
"Only one of you deserves to live."
The twins clung to each other's hands.
Then strangers pulled them apart.
Emma screamed.
"EVELYN!"
Her own voice echoed through the bunker.
Everyone rushed toward her.
She collapsed onto her knees, shaking violently.
Daniel caught her before she hit the floor.
"I saw her..."
Emma cried.
"I saw them take her..."
Claire buried her face in her hands.
"I'm sorry..."
"I'm so sorry..."
Late that night...
Marcus burst into the underground archive carrying a tablet.
"Daniel."
Daniel looked up.
"What happened?"
"We found something."
He handed over the screen.
One of the estate's exterior cameras had captured a vehicle leaving the property just before the observatory exploded.
A black delivery van.
No license plate.
But the driver's face reflected briefly in the side mirror.
Ethan enlarged the image.
The room became silent.
Emma stared at the face.
Then frowned.
"I know him."
Daniel turned.
"From where?"
Emma looked confused.
"I don't know."
"But..."
"He was at the orphanage."
Claire suddenly stood.
Her face drained of all color.
"No..."
Daniel looked at her.
"You recognize him."
Claire whispered one name.
"Dr. Henry Lawson."
Emma blinked.
"My father?"
Claire slowly shook her head.
"No."
"Not your father."
She pointed at the screen with trembling fingers.
"That's his younger brother."
Silence.
"Dr. Michael Lawson."
Ethan frowned.
"There were two Lawson brothers?"
Claire nodded.
"Henry wanted to save children."
Her voice broke.
"Michael wanted to finish Project Orchid."
Daniel's eyes hardened.
The conspiracy was no longer just about Victoria.
Or Claire.
Or Richard.
It involved another scientist.
Another Lawson.
A man who had disappeared from every official record nine years ago.
A man who had just been seen fleeing the observatory moments before it exploded.
And if Claire was right...
He wasn't searching for Emma.
He was searching for Evelyn.
Because somewhere in the shadows...
May you like
Subject Eighteen was still alive.
And someone intended to finish what Project Orchid had started.
