CHAPTER 15 — The Father They Couldn't Silence

The photograph slipped from Emma's trembling fingers.

It landed face-up on the conference table.

Two little girls smiled back at her.

A moment frozen before their lives were shattered.

Neither of them knew they would be separated within days.

Neither of them knew one would grow up believing she was an orphan...

...while the other disappeared into darkness.

Emma whispered,

"My father..."

Claire closed her eyes.

"No."

Emma looked up.

"What do you mean?"

Claire took a slow breath.

"The police found Henry Lawson."

"They haven't identified him."

Emma's heart pounded.

"So..."

Claire looked directly at Daniel.

"We don't know if he's really dead."

Silence.

Marcus frowned.

"The detective said they recovered a body."

Claire nodded.

"So did they nine years ago."

The room fell quiet.

Everyone remembered.

Nine years earlier...

Claire herself had supposedly died.

Without anyone ever seeing the body.

Daniel immediately called the lead detective.

After several minutes of conversation, he hung up.

Marcus looked at him expectantly.

"Well?"

Daniel's expression remained unreadable.

"They found a man carrying Henry Lawson's identification."

Emma frowned.

"But?"

"They haven't confirmed his identity."

"The face..."

"...was severely burned."

Claire slowly nodded.

"The same method."

Daniel looked at her.

"They're repeating history."

Someone wanted them to believe Henry Lawson was dead.

Exactly as they had once believed Claire Bennett was dead.

Meanwhile...

Nearly fifty miles away...

Inside an abandoned church hidden deep in the mountains...

An elderly man slowly opened his eyes.

His breathing was ragged.

An oxygen tube rested beneath his nose.

The room was dimly lit by candles.

A priest quietly entered carrying medicine.

"You're awake."

The old man smiled weakly.

"I heard the explosion."

The priest nodded.

"They destroyed the observatory."

The man closed his eyes.

"So Daniel found the archive."

"You know him?"

The priest asked.

The old man smiled faintly.

"He reminds me..."

"...of his father."

The priest hesitated.

"Should I tell him you're alive?"

The old man looked toward the stained-glass window.

"Not yet."

"My daughter isn't safe."

The priest nodded.

"As you wish..."

Dr. Henry Lawson.

Alive.

Back at the Ashford estate...

Ethan continued examining the recovered laboratory footage.

He slowed the final seconds frame by frame.

Something caught his attention.

"Wait."

Daniel walked over.

"What?"

Ethan enlarged the syringe in Michael Lawson's hand.

"It isn't empty."

Marcus looked confused.

"So?"

Ethan adjusted the image again.

Tiny black letters became visible on the glass.

O-18

Claire's face turned white.

"No..."

Daniel looked toward her.

"What does that mean?"

Claire's voice trembled.

"It wasn't medicine."

"It was the final Orchid formula."

Emma frowned.

"What did it do?"

Claire swallowed.

"We never completed human testing."

Marcus folded his arms.

"So no one knows."

Claire shook her head.

"One person does."

"Who?"

She whispered,

"Evelyn."

Emma stared at Claire.

"My sister?"

Claire nodded slowly.

"Subject Eighteen received the completed formula."

Silence filled the room.

Daniel looked toward Ethan.

"So whatever Michael did..."

"...he did to Evelyn."

Claire closed her eyes.

"And for nine years..."

"...he's had complete control over her."

Emma felt tears welling again.

"My sister..."

"Has been alone all this time."

Daniel placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder.

"Not anymore."

He meant every word.

That evening...

The forensic report on the threatening note finally arrived.

Ethan walked quickly into Daniel's office.

"I found something."

Daniel looked up.

"The handwriting?"

"No."

"The ink."

Marcus frowned.

"Ink?"

Ethan nodded.

"The note wasn't written recently."

Daniel raised an eyebrow.

"What?"

"The chemical composition is unusual."

He placed the laboratory report on the desk.

"This ink stopped being manufactured..."

"...ten years ago."

Silence.

Marcus looked confused.

"So whoever wrote the message..."

"...had been planning this for years."

Ethan nodded.

"Or..."

He looked at Daniel.

"...they've been hiding for years."

Emma couldn't sleep.

She wandered into the mansion's library shortly after midnight.

The silence comforted her.

Books had always been her refuge.

She reached absentmindedly toward a shelf.

One old novel slipped free.

As it fell...

Something fluttered onto the floor.

A folded piece of paper.

Emma picked it up.

It wasn't part of the book.

It had been hidden inside.

The handwriting was elegant.

Familiar.

Claire's.

Emma unfolded it carefully.

Only three sentences were written.

If you're reading this...

It means your memories have begun returning.

Don't trust mirrors.

Emma frowned.

Mirrors?

What did that mean?

Footsteps echoed behind her.

Daniel entered quietly.

"You couldn't sleep either?"

Emma handed him the note.

He read it twice.

"Don't trust mirrors..."

He looked around the library.

"What was Claire trying to tell us?"

Suddenly...

Emma froze.

She stared at the opposite wall.

Daniel noticed.

"What is it?"

Emma pointed toward an enormous antique mirror above the fireplace.

"I've seen it before."

Daniel frowned.

"You've never been in this room before we married."

Emma slowly approached the mirror.

"No..."

"I've stood here."

Her reflection stared back at her.

Another memory surfaced.

A little girl.

Standing before the same mirror.

Victoria kneeling beside her.

Speaking softly.

"Smile."

Emma remembered refusing.

Victoria's smile disappeared.

Then...

Victoria touched the edge of the mirror.

Click.

Emma gasped.

"The mirror!"

Daniel immediately searched the ornate frame.

His fingers found a hidden switch.

He pressed it.

The massive mirror slowly swung outward.

Revealing...

Another hidden chamber.

Smaller than Richard's office.

Completely untouched.

Inside stood only a wooden desk.

And a single portrait.

Daniel stepped inside first.

His breath caught.

The portrait showed Richard Ashford.

Sarah Lawson.

Henry Lawson.

Claire Bennett.

Thomas Greene.

And...

A young Daniel.

Perhaps twelve years old.

Standing beside Emma.

Only she wasn't Emma.

She was Evelyn.

Emma whispered,

"No..."

Daniel stared at the painting.

He remembered that day.

The garden.

The picnic.

The laughter.

But he had always believed the little girl beside him was the daughter of one of his father's researchers.

He had never known her name.

Now...

He realized the impossible truth.

He had met Evelyn.

Long before he ever met Emma.

Before anyone could speak...

A small tape recorder hidden beneath the portrait suddenly activated.

A man's voice echoed through the secret room.

Richard Ashford.

Daniel...

If you've found this room...

then you've finally reached the truth I tried to bury.

Listen carefully.

Because the greatest lie...

wasn't about Emma.

The recording paused.

Then Richard spoke the words that changed everything.

May you like

The child Michael Lawson took that night...

...was never Evelyn.
