CHAPTER 16 — The Child Who Was Taken

No one breathed.

Richard Ashford's recorded voice echoed through the hidden chamber.

The child Michael Lawson took that night...

...was never Evelyn.

Emma stared at the tape recorder.

Daniel felt the floor beneath him disappear.

Claire's face had gone completely white.

Marcus was the first to speak.

"That's impossible."

Ethan remained silent.

He had learned one lesson over the past few days.

Nothing about Project Orchid was ever what it seemed.

The recording continued.

Richard's voice sounded tired.

Older.

Like a man carrying the weight of countless mistakes.

If you're hearing this...

Then Claire survived.

Or Daniel finally found what I couldn't destroy.

Daniel instinctively stepped closer.

Richard sighed heavily.

Michael believed he escaped with Subject Eighteen.

I made certain he didn't.

Emma frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Claire slowly covered her mouth.

"No..."

Richard continued.

While Michael prepared the transport...

Thomas switched the children.

The room froze.

Marcus looked toward Thomas, who had been brought downstairs in a wheelchair only moments earlier.

The old groundskeeper slowly lowered his eyes.

Daniel looked at him.

"You knew."

Thomas nodded.

"I helped Richard."

Emma's voice trembled.

"So..."

"...who did Michael take?"

Richard answered from the recording.

Another orphan.

Silence.

A silence so complete that even the sound of the tape turning became deafening.

Emma whispered,

"A different child..."

Richard continued.

Michael never realized the swap.

He spent nine years believing he possessed Subject Eighteen.

He never did.

Claire staggered backward.

Tears streamed down her face.

"I never knew..."

Thomas looked at her sadly.

"Richard refused to tell anyone."

"Not even me."

Daniel frowned.

"Why keep it secret?"

Thomas answered quietly.

"Because if anyone was captured..."

"...they couldn't reveal the truth."

Claire slowly nodded.

Richard had hidden the secret from everyone.

Even his closest allies.

Emma sat down heavily.

"My sister..."

"So Evelyn escaped?"

Richard's voice returned.

Yes.

Evelyn escaped.

Emma closed her eyes in relief.

But the relief lasted only seconds.

Richard finished the sentence.

For six hours.

The room fell silent once more.

Daniel felt his pulse quicken.

Richard continued.

Victoria found her before sunrise.

Emma's hope shattered.

"No..."

Richard's breathing became heavier.

I couldn't stop them.

Henry was injured.

Claire was already gone.

Sarah was dying.

Thomas had Emma.

And I...

I failed Evelyn.

The tape clicked.

Then another recording began automatically.

This one wasn't Richard's.

It was Sarah.

Her voice was weak.

Almost breaking.

Emma...

If you're listening...

Don't hate your sister.

Emma frowned through her tears.

Sarah continued.

Everything Evelyn became...

happened because she believed we abandoned her.

Claire began crying openly.

Thomas closed his eyes.

He remembered that night too well.

Nine years earlier...

The underground laboratory.

Smoke filled the corridors.

Emergency alarms screamed.

Eight-year-old Evelyn clung desperately to Sarah.

"I don't want to go!"

Sarah knelt before her daughter.

"You have to be brave."

"I'll come back!"

"You promise?"

Sarah kissed her forehead.

"I promise."

But before Sarah could stand...

Victoria's security team stormed the room.

A masked guard tore Evelyn away.

The little girl screamed.

"MOM!"

Sarah fought wildly.

Richard held her back.

"They'll kill both of you!"

Evelyn stretched out her tiny hand.

"Don't leave me!"

Then the steel doors slammed shut.

That had been the last time Sarah ever saw her daughter.

The memory faded.

Back in the present...

No one could speak.

Emma wiped away tears.

"My sister thought..."

"...our mother abandoned her."

Claire nodded.

"Yes."

"And Michael made sure she kept believing it."

Ethan suddenly looked thoughtful.

"Wait."

Everyone turned.

"If Michael never had Subject Eighteen..."

He pointed toward Richard's recording.

"He eventually discovered the truth."

Daniel nodded slowly.

"Which means..."

"He started looking for the real Evelyn."

Marcus finished the sentence.

"For nine years."

Across the city...

Inside the underground laboratory...

Dr. Michael Lawson stood before dozens of surveillance monitors.

One screen displayed Daniel.

Another showed Emma.

Another...

Showed the hidden archive beneath the observatory.

A technician entered nervously.

"Doctor..."

Michael didn't look away.

"What?"

"We confirmed it."

Michael smiled.

"They opened Richard's final room."

"Yes."

"And?"

The technician hesitated.

"They know Evelyn survived."

Michael laughed softly.

"Good."

The technician looked confused.

"You wanted them to know?"

Michael turned slowly.

His smile was unsettling.

"I've waited nine years..."

"...for Emma to start looking."

The technician frowned.

"Why?"

Michael walked toward a reinforced steel door.

He entered a private observation room.

Inside...

A young woman sat reading a book beside a window.

She looked almost identical to Emma.

Only her eyes were colder.

Far colder.

Michael smiled gently.

"They're coming."

The woman closed her book.

"So?"

Michael walked closer.

"Your sister finally remembers you."

The woman looked toward him.

There was no emotion on her face.

Only quiet curiosity.

"My sister..."

She repeated the words slowly.

As though they belonged to someone else's life.

Michael nodded.

"Yes."

"What should I do when she arrives?"

Michael answered without hesitation.

"Exactly what I taught you."

The woman smiled.

A perfect smile.

Beautiful.

Empty.

Then she softly asked,

"Should I kill her?"

Michael looked directly into her eyes.

"No."

He placed a gentle hand on her shoulder.

"You'll do something much more difficult."

She tilted her head.

"What?"

Michael's smile widened.

"You'll convince her..."

"...that she's the wrong twin."

Back at the Ashford estate...

Marcus burst into the hidden room carrying a newly decoded satellite report.

"Daniel!"

Daniel looked up.

"What happened?"

"We found Northridge Sanatorium."

Ethan stood immediately.

"Where?"

Marcus spread the satellite photographs across the table.

The building wasn't abandoned.

It had been rebuilt.

Expanded.

Hidden beneath dense forest.

No roads appeared on any public map.

Daniel studied the images carefully.

Then his eyes narrowed.

"There."

Marcus followed his gaze.

A children's playground.

Swings.

Slides.

A small garden.

Marcus frowned.

"A laboratory has a playground?"

Claire's blood ran cold.

"No..."

Daniel looked at her.

"What?"

Claire whispered,

"They're still taking children."

The room fell silent.

Project Orchid...

Had never ended.

It had simply gone underground.

And somewhere inside that hidden facility...

May you like

A woman who looked exactly like Emma...

Was waiting for her to arrive.
