CHAPTER 14 — The Sister in the Shadows

Rain fell steadily over the Ashford estate.
Lightning flashed across the sky, illuminating the burned remains of the observatory.
Daniel stood alone on the balcony outside his study.
He hadn't slept in nearly forty-eight hours.
Every answer had opened another door.
Emma wasn't an orphan.
Richard Ashford hadn't been the monster everyone believed.
Claire had never died.
Project Orchid had involved eighteen children.
And somewhere...
Emma's twin sister was still alive.
He looked down at the photograph again.
Two little girls.
One life stolen.
One life erased.
He made himself a promise.
"I'll find her."
Inside the underground archive, Ethan had turned one of the old research rooms into a digital lab.
Dozens of documents had been scanned overnight.
Thousands of pages.
Most were damaged beyond repair.
But one file caught his attention.
PROJECT ORCHID – SECURITY TRANSFERS
He opened it.
Nearly every page had been destroyed.
Only a single transport log remained.
Date: October 18, Nine Years Ago
Cargo: Subject 18
Escort: Dr. Michael Lawson
Destination: Facility H-7
The location field had been blacked out.
Marcus looked over Ethan's shoulder.
"H-7?"
"No address?"
Ethan shook his head.
"Nothing."
"But whoever erased this..."
"...missed something."
He enlarged the bottom corner of the page.
A faint stamp slowly became visible.
PROPERTY OF NORTHRIDGE SANATORIUM
Daniel frowned.
"I've never heard of it."
Claire, who had quietly entered the room, suddenly stopped walking.
Her face turned pale.
"I have."
Everyone looked at her.
Claire whispered,
"It was closed twenty years ago."
Emma turned toward Claire.
"What was it?"
Claire hesitated.
"It wasn't officially a hospital."
"Then what was it?"
Claire closed her eyes.
"It was a neurological research center."
Marcus frowned.
"For children?"
Claire nodded.
"Mostly."
Daniel noticed the fear in her voice.
"What happened there?"
Claire answered quietly.
"People disappeared."
Silence.
"The government shut it down."
"But..."
She looked at Ethan.
"I always suspected someone kept using it."
Daniel immediately made a decision.
"We leave at sunrise."
Marcus nodded.
"I'll organize security."
Ethan began downloading satellite maps.
Emma stepped forward.
"I'm coming."
Daniel looked at her.
"No."
Emma met his gaze without hesitation.
"If Evelyn is there..."
"...I'm the only person she'll recognize."
Daniel wanted to argue.
But he couldn't.
Instead, he simply said,
"Then you don't leave my side."
Across town...
In an abandoned industrial district...
A steel elevator descended beneath an old textile factory.
Far below the surface...
Hidden beneath layers of concrete...
A modern laboratory came to life.
Rows of monitors flickered.
Medical equipment hummed softly.
A man in a white coat stood before a reinforced glass room.
Dr. Michael Lawson.
He was older than Henry.
His hair had turned silver.
But his eyes remained cold.
Inside the room...
A woman sat quietly by the window.
Long dark hair.
Gray eyes.
She looked almost identical to Emma.
Michael smiled.
"They found the archive."
The woman didn't respond.
"They know about you now."
Still nothing.
Michael placed the photograph of Emma on the table.
"You'll see your sister soon."
The woman finally looked up.
Her expression remained emotionless.
"What..."
"...do you want me to do?"
Michael answered calmly.
"What you've always been trained to do."
He slid a mirror toward her.
She stared at her reflection.
Michael whispered,
"Become Emma."
Back at the Ashford estate...
Claire couldn't sleep.
She wandered quietly through the mansion until she reached the old chapel.
The candles had long since burned out.
She knelt before the altar.
"I failed them."
A familiar voice answered from behind.
"No."
Claire turned.
Thomas Greene stood in the doorway.
Weak.
Supported by a cane.
"You saved one."
Claire lowered her head.
"I couldn't save both."
Thomas slowly approached.
"You couldn't."
"They would have killed all of you."
Claire's eyes filled with tears.
"I still hear Evelyn screaming."
Thomas closed his eyes.
"So do I."
Meanwhile...
Ethan continued reconstructing damaged files.
One corrupted video suddenly became playable.
Static covered most of the screen.
Then...
A laboratory appeared.
The timestamp matched the final day before Project Orchid collapsed.
Claire.
Richard.
Sarah.
Henry Lawson.
Victoria.
Everyone was arguing.
The audio was distorted.
Only fragments remained.
Sarah shouted,
"You're turning children into weapons!"
Victoria answered,
"I'm creating survivors."
Richard slammed his hand on the table.
"This project ends today!"
Then...
A little girl ran into the room.
Emma.
She couldn't have been older than eight.
She was crying.
"Please don't take my sister!"
Daniel stared at the screen.
His heart broke.
Even after all these years...
Emma's first instinct had been to protect Evelyn.
The recording suddenly glitched.
Another figure entered the room.
Dr. Michael Lawson.
He calmly injected a clear liquid into a syringe.
Henry stepped between him and the children.
"What are you doing?"
Michael answered with chilling calm.
"Saving the project."
The video ended abruptly.
Silence filled the archive.
Marcus looked toward Daniel.
"So Michael caused everything."
Claire slowly shook her head.
"No."
Daniel frowned.
"What?"
Claire pointed at the frozen image.
"You missed something."
Ethan enlarged the final frame.
Everyone leaned closer.
Behind Michael...
Barely visible...
Someone else stood in the doorway.
Only part of the face could be seen.
A woman.
Blonde hair.
Elegant posture.
Marcus whispered,
"Who is she?"
Claire's breathing became uneven.
"It can't be..."
Daniel looked at her.
"You know her."
Claire nodded.
"She wasn't supposed to survive."
Emma stepped closer.
"Who is she?"
Claire whispered the name with visible fear.
"Dr. Eleanor Pierce."
Ethan searched the archives immediately.
Nothing.
No employment records.
No photographs.
No identification.
As if she had never existed.
Claire looked toward Daniel.
"She wasn't just another scientist."
Daniel waited.
Claire's voice cracked.
"She designed Project Orchid."
The room fell silent.
Marcus frowned.
"I thought Richard started it."
Claire slowly shook her head.
"No."
"Richard only funded it."
"Eleanor imagined it."
"And Michael perfected it."
Emma stared at the frozen frame.
"So where is she now?"
No one answered.
Because no one knew.
At least...
Until Marcus's phone rang.
He answered immediately.
"Marcus Hill."
A detective from the city police spoke rapidly.
Marcus's expression changed.
"What?"
Daniel stood.
"What happened?"
Marcus slowly lowered the phone.
"They found a body."
Claire closed her eyes.
"Who?"
Marcus looked directly at her.
"Dr. Henry Lawson."
Emma felt the room spin.
"My father..."
Marcus swallowed.
"He was found less than an hour ago."
"There was only one thing in his pocket."
Daniel asked quietly,
"What was it?"
Marcus looked at the evidence photo on his phone.
"A picture."
He turned the screen toward them.
It showed two smiling eight-year-old twin girls.
Emma...
And Evelyn.
On the back of the photograph...
Written in fresh ink...
May you like
Were six chilling words.
YOU'RE ALREADY TOO LATE, DANIEL.
