CHAPTER 12 — Sarah's Last Message

The underground chamber fell silent.

Only the slow grinding of ancient gears echoed through the darkness as the steel hatch finished opening.

Cold air drifted upward.

It carried the scent of old stone, dust...

...and something else.

Lavender.

Emma froze.

She didn't know why.

But the fragrance made her heart ache.

Claire covered her mouth.

"She always wore lavender."

Daniel looked at her.

"Sarah?"

Claire nodded.

"It was her favorite."

Emma felt another sharp pulse behind her eyes.

For a split second...

She saw a woman kneeling in a sunlit garden.

Laughing.

Holding a little girl in her arms.

The scent of lavender surrounded them.

Then the memory disappeared.

Marcus switched on a powerful flashlight.

The beam disappeared into the darkness below.

"Thirty steps."

Ethan counted quietly.

"Maybe more."

Daniel turned toward the estate guards.

"No one comes down unless I say so."

"Yes, sir."

Daniel looked at Emma.

"You don't have to do this."

Emma met his eyes.

"I've spent my whole life wondering who I was."

She took a deep breath.

"I'm done running from the truth."

Daniel nodded once.

"Then we go together."

The staircase spiraled deep beneath the observatory.

The walls were reinforced with thick concrete.

Someone had invested a fortune building the hidden bunker.

Marcus ran his hand across the wall.

"This wasn't built a hundred years ago."

Ethan nodded.

"No."

"This was added later."

"Probably during Project Orchid."

At the bottom of the stairs...

A heavy blast door blocked their path.

There was no electronic keypad.

Only an old-fashioned brass lock.

Emma inserted the orchid key.

The mechanism clicked.

Hydraulic pistons hissed.

The massive door slowly swung open.

The chamber beyond looked untouched by time.

Shelves filled with neatly labeled boxes.

Research journals.

Film reels.

Medical files.

Computers covered in protective cloth.

A large recording console stood against the far wall.

Above it...

A handwritten sign.

For Emma.

Emma's legs nearly gave way.

Daniel steadied her.

She walked slowly toward the console.

A cassette player waited there.

Already loaded.

Beside it...

A single button.

PLAY

Claire began crying before Emma even touched it.

Daniel looked at her.

"You knew."

Claire nodded.

"Sarah planned this."

Emma pressed the button.

The tape clicked.

Static filled the room.

Then...

A woman's gentle voice emerged.

Warm.

Calm.

Filled with love.

"My beautiful Emma..."

Emma's knees buckled.

She had never heard her mother's voice.

Yet somehow...

She recognized it instantly.

Tears streamed down her face.

The recording continued.

If you are listening to this...

then you survived.

That means Claire kept her promise.

Claire quietly lowered her head.

Sarah's voice trembled.

I wish I could hold you one more time.

I wish I could watch you grow up.

But I don't think I'll live long enough.

Emma buried her face in her hands.

Daniel stood silently beside her.

No words could comfort this kind of pain.

Sarah continued.

Emma...

There is one thing you must never believe.

You were never abandoned.

Not for one second.

Emma closed her eyes.

Every lonely birthday.

Every Christmas at the orphanage.

Every night wondering why no one came for her.

A lie.

Her mother had fought for her.

Until the end.

The tape played on.

Victoria wanted your blood.

She believed you carried something that could make powerful people unstoppable.

She was wrong.

Daniel frowned.

Claire slowly whispered,

"Sarah never accepted the Orchid Gene theory."

Sarah's recorded voice continued.

There was never anything special about your blood.

What made you different...

was your courage.

Emma looked up.

Confused.

Sarah laughed softly on the recording.

Even when you were only eight...

you protected the other children.

You always stood in front of them.

Claire smiled through tears.

"She did."

Emma looked at Claire.

"I don't remember."

"You will."

Suddenly...

The tape crackled.

Sarah's tone changed.

More urgent.

Daniel...

If Emma found you...

then I owe you an apology.

Daniel's eyes widened.

"Me?"

Sarah continued.

Your father wasn't the villain.

Richard made terrible mistakes.

But in the end...

he gave up everything to save my daughter.

Daniel slowly sat down.

Everything he believed about his father had been changing piece by piece.

Now...

The final image was beginning to emerge.

Richard Ashford had not died protecting an empire.

He had died protecting a child.

The recording reached its final minutes.

Sarah's breathing sounded weaker.

As if she were speaking from a hospital bed.

There is one last secret.

Everyone instinctively leaned closer.

Project Orchid had eighteen children.

Marcus glanced toward Ethan.

"The files..."

Ethan nodded.

"They're matching."

Sarah continued.

Seventeen escaped.

Emma frowned.

"Seventeen?"

Claire suddenly looked confused.

"No..."

Sarah whispered the final words.

The eighteenth child...

never left the laboratory.

Silence.

Daniel's heartbeat quickened.

Subject Eighteen.

Transferred.

Not dead.

Not missing.

Still there.

Sarah's voice became almost inaudible.

If Victoria finds Child Eighteen first...

everything we sacrificed...

will be meaningless.

The tape ended.

Click.

Silence.

No one spoke.

For nearly a full minute.

Finally...

Marcus broke it.

"So Subject Eighteen..."

"...is still alive."

Claire looked terrified.

"I thought..."

"I thought Richard moved the child."

Ethan opened one of the filing cabinets.

Dozens of personnel files.

Old maps.

Facility blueprints.

Then...

One sealed folder.

SUBJECT 18

Daniel carefully opened it.

Inside...

Only one page.

One photograph.

Everyone stared.

Emma slowly reached for it.

The picture showed two little girls.

Both wearing identical orphanage uniforms.

Both about eight years old.

One was Emma.

The other...

Looked almost exactly like her.

Emma whispered,

"That's impossible..."

Claire took the photograph.

The color drained from her face.

"Oh God..."

Daniel looked at her.

"You know her."

Claire nodded slowly.

Barely able to speak.

"She isn't another child."

Daniel frowned.

"Then who is she?"

Claire's answer echoed through the underground chamber.

"She's Emma's twin sister."

The room fell into stunned silence.

Emma stared at the photograph, unable to breathe.

She had spent her entire life believing she was alone.

An orphan.

An only child.

Now, in a single moment...

She learned she had a twin.

A sister no one had ever mentioned.

A sister who had vanished into Project Orchid.

And somewhere...

May you like

If Sarah's final message was true...

She was still alive.
