CHAPTER 18 — The Girl Behind the Glass

The convoy left the Ashford estate just before sunrise.

Three black SUVs disappeared into the winding mountain roads leading toward the abandoned Northridge Sanatorium.

No one spoke.

Emma sat beside Daniel, her fingers tightly wrapped around the faded photograph of herself and Evelyn.

She had spent sixteen years searching for a family she never knew existed.

Now...

She was only hours away from meeting her twin sister.

Yet the closer they came...

The heavier her heart became.

Because she wasn't driving toward a reunion.

She was driving toward a rescue.

Two hours later...

Marcus raised his fist.

The convoy stopped.

Ahead, hidden behind dense pine trees, stood the remains of Northridge Sanatorium.

Or at least...

That was what the world believed.

The crumbling stone hospital above ground was only a disguise.

Thermal imaging revealed something far larger beneath it.

Ethan placed a digital blueprint across the hood of the SUV.

"They built an underground facility."

Daniel studied the layout.

Three entrances.

One main gate.

Two emergency tunnels.

Marcus pointed to the northern side.

"This service tunnel has almost no heat signatures."

Ethan nodded.

"Probably used for supplies."

Daniel made his decision.

"We split into two teams."

Marcus frowned.

"Too risky."

Daniel looked toward Emma.

"If Michael expects me..."

"...he won't expect Ethan entering through the tunnel."

Emma understood immediately.

"What about me?"

Daniel answered without hesitation.

"You stay with me."

Deep underground...

Michael Lawson watched every camera feed.

The convoy.

The forest.

The tunnels.

Everything unfolded exactly as he had planned.

A technician approached.

"They're here."

Michael smiled.

"Excellent."

He turned toward Evelyn.

She stood before a large window overlooking the underground gardens.

Children played below.

Laughing.

Running.

Completely unaware of the experiments surrounding them.

Michael walked beside her.

"Tell me."

"What do you see?"

Evelyn answered calmly.

"Happy children."

Michael nodded.

"And that's why they'll trust us."

He looked directly into her eyes.

"When your sister arrives..."

"...show her paradise."

Daniel's team entered through the collapsed main entrance.

Dust covered the hallways.

Broken wheelchairs.

Rusted hospital beds.

Peeling paint.

The abandoned building looked exactly as government records described.

Marcus whispered,

"Looks deserted."

Ethan's voice crackled through the radio.

"Don't trust appearances."

"We found an elevator beneath the boiler room."

Daniel smiled faintly.

"So did we."

Hidden beneath a collapsed operating table...

A biometric elevator waited.

Still functioning.

Still powered.

Marcus frowned.

"How?"

Ethan answered through the radio.

"Underground generators."

Daniel stepped inside.

The elevator descended.

Ten floors.

Twenty.

Thirty.

The numbers kept falling.

Emma looked at him.

"How deep are we going?"

Ethan's quiet voice answered.

"Far enough..."

"...that nobody hears anyone scream."

The doors opened.

Daniel expected armed guards.

Instead...

He found sunlight.

Or what looked like sunlight.

Massive LED panels covered the ceiling.

Artificial blue skies stretched overhead.

Green grass.

Flower gardens.

Children laughing.

Emma stopped walking.

"It..."

"...looks beautiful."

Claire's warning echoed in Daniel's mind.

The most dangerous prisons don't have locked doors.

He slowly looked around.

Everything was perfect.

Too perfect.

No crying.

No arguments.

No fear.

Just smiling children.

Marcus whispered,

"I don't like this."

Neither did Daniel.

A little girl approached Emma.

She couldn't have been older than six.

She smiled brightly.

"Are you Emma?"

Emma blinked.

"Yes."

The child reached into her pocket.

"I have something for you."

She handed Emma a folded piece of paper.

Then skipped away.

Emma opened it.

Only five words appeared.

Don't trust the children.

Daniel immediately looked around.

The little girl had vanished.

Marcus searched nearby.

Nothing.

It was as if she had never existed.

Meanwhile...

Ethan's team emerged inside the lower research wing.

Unlike the gardens above...

This level revealed the truth.

Steel doors.

Isolation rooms.

Medical laboratories.

Rows of surveillance monitors.

He quietly photographed everything.

"This is Project Orchid."

One technician noticed movement.

His eyes widened.

"Infiltrators!"

The alarm finally sounded.

Throughout the underground facility...

Red emergency lights began flashing.

Children calmly stood in neat lines.

No panic.

No confusion.

Almost...

As if they had rehearsed it.

Daniel frowned.

"They've trained them."

Emma looked horrified.

"They're treating them like soldiers."

Then...

A familiar voice echoed through hidden speakers.

"Welcome."

Michael Lawson.

His voice remained calm.

"I've been waiting."

Daniel looked upward.

"Where are you?"

Michael chuckled.

"Everywhere."

The walls around them suddenly became transparent.

Hidden glass panels faded clear.

Hundreds of observers watched from behind one-way windows.

Doctors.

Researchers.

Security personnel.

Every movement Daniel made...

Had been monitored from the moment he entered.

A door slowly opened at the far end of the garden.

A young woman stepped through.

Emma's breath caught.

Evelyn.

This time...

There was no video screen.

No distance.

Only a few yards separated them.

The sisters stared at each other.

Neither moved.

Neither spoke.

Finally...

Emma whispered,

"Evelyn."

The name echoed softly through the enormous chamber.

Evelyn tilted her head.

"You remembered."

Emma smiled through tears.

"I never forgot."

Evelyn's expression flickered.

For one brief second...

Something inside her seemed to awaken.

A tiny fragment.

A forgotten feeling.

Then Michael's voice echoed again.

"Evelyn."

She immediately straightened.

The warmth disappeared from her face.

Like a switch had been flipped.

She looked at Emma.

"My name..."

She spoke slowly.

"...is Subject Eighteen."

Emma's heart broke.

Daniel took one careful step forward.

"Evelyn..."

She raised her hand.

"Stop."

Behind her...

Dozens of steel doors unlocked simultaneously.

Marcus heard the metallic clicks.

His expression hardened.

"Daniel..."

Every laboratory door swung open.

Young men.

Young women.

Children.

Teenagers.

Adults.

All wearing identical white uniforms.

Each one stood silently.

Each one wore the same orchid emblem.

Ethan's voice exploded through the radio.

"Daniel!"

"We've found the patient registry!"

Daniel kept his eyes on Evelyn.

"What does it say?"

Silence.

Then Ethan answered.

His voice shook.

"There aren't eighteen subjects anymore."

Daniel's stomach tightened.

"How many?"

Ethan looked at the endless database one last time.

Then whispered the number.

"Two hundred and forty-three."

The room fell silent.

Project Orchid had never been a failed experiment.

May you like

It had become an empire.

And Daniel had just walked into its heart.
